Although I am not the typical "Stickman" reader, I did enjoy his column and am glad to see that he has returned to writing.
He writes a column. If you don't like it, then I think you do not have to read it, just like any other column writer.
I am not sure why there are so many people that are talking down about him? I have admit that I have never met him in person, but have corresponded with him a couple of times with questions, and he has always been very kind and quick with his responses.

A bit of a different perspective from a single female living in the downtown BKK.
I have not track my monthly expenses super hard, but I think it is some where between 80,000 to 100,000 baht per month.
Housing is about 30,000. This is for a one bedroom (newish) condo near the Thong Lor area. For me, I wanted a nice place, nice pool attached, has a fitness center, kind of close to BTS, secure, etc. I know this is quite high, but is worth it for me.
I am not a big drinker, but do like to go out with friends sometimes during the weekends.
Street restaurants are very good, and I can cook okay, but I also like to go out to nicer restaurants once in a while.
I do not have a car, and use public transport quite often, but if I am in a out of the way place, or late at night, I will call a car driver I know, and that is obviously more than BTS.
I travel back home or other places when I can. Some are paid for, but others I have to pay myself. So, travel can be expensive. I don't want to take a 12 hour bus ride somewhere. I would rather pay the extra for the plane.
I am sure I could reduce if needed, but so far, this works for me, and reduction is not yet necessary. ?

I stay in the Thong Lor area. About 25000 for a one bedroom condo with pool, gym, etc. (probably about 60-65 m2) For me, it works very well. The condo is on a sub soi of Thong Lor, so close but away from the noise. The down part is that it is about 1-1.5 km from the BTS stop, so it can be a hot walk, though there are moto taxis, regular taxis, and a baht bus that runs up and down Thong Lor. I really like the condo, but would like to be a bit closer to BTS station.

What kind of lame reply is that ? We choose AirBNB to live in an apartment , with kitchen, maybe cook our own food. And it can be more expensive than hotels. A nice condo with swimming pool and gym , cheaper than a 3 star hotel. Got nothing to do with being a CC.
Agree with this. I have made AirBnB reservations in BKK a couple of times for friends and they have always enjoyed the stay. Read the listing carefully, look at reviews, etc. Always nice to have a bit of room to spread out, cook inside, etc.
Also one time rented a short stay house south of Hua His (though on Homeaway, and not AirBnB). If you do your homework (and it helps if you are familiar with the general location of the rental), most of the time it will turn out okay.

I know this may be a bit late, but if you are willing to pay, AOT is a good option. I have used them when I have a very odd hour flight to the airport, and they are always waiting for me, A/C car, good driver, etc. Not so cheap, but in certain cases, it is worth it.

W district?
That is by the Phra Khanong BTS stop. It is marketed as a art area, but in there is also a big open air food court. Lots of different stalls from a variety of western and non western foods. You can also get beer, mix drinks, smoothies, etc. A relaxing place to go for the evening.
It has been mentioned above the restaurant in the Ploen Chit center. The food court on the sixth floor is pretty good during the lunch time. Typical Thai food court, mainly for the office workers in Ploen Chit offer block.

DId not know there was a difference. I was there with a mixed group of farang and Thais, and we all went in the same entrance. They asked for ID, one of the foreigners did not have his passport nor knew his #. The Thais vouched for him and they let him in. On Tuesday night, the wait was only about 15 minutes. Jeans were okay. Did not see them stopping people who were wearing jeans.

Is Seen Space on Thong Lor Soi 13 gone now? I passed by there during the daytime recently, and it seemed as though it is no longer there.
Had some good times with a group of friends there in the past, so was just wondering.
Thanks!!

Unfortunately, I do not think so. I asked a simliar question a couple of years ago (cannot find the link right now), and the answer then was there were not any such places.

I like the Long Table in Asoke. I guess it is not a true rooftop, but I like the atmosphere. HOwever, like many of the places mentioned here, it is not super cheap. Good for a "once in a while" night out however. :)

agree,
walk up to Sukh from soi 2, turn left, and you will find many street food suppliers within the next 500-600 meters
(now, in the Ploenchit shopping centre (on the corner of soi 2 and Sukh) you will also find a bunch of eateries)
On the sixth floor of the Ploen Chit center is a good food court. Very crowded during the lunch hour, but a good option for a variety of food and good priced.

Are you looking for machines and/or free weights? I know the JW Marriott has a pretty good gym, many of the normal cardio vascular machines as well as some free weights. However, I think it is pretty expensive.

I know this doesnt really solve your problem, but I used to stay in Indonesia and my housing was right next to a mosque. For the first week, I would jump out of bed when the call to prayer came early early morning. Second week or so, I would wake up, notice that there was noise and fall back asleep. By the end of the first month, my body slept through it. I guess it was at the same time every morning and my body/mind knew it was coming and learned to ignore it. Hopefully, you will have something like that happen to you.

I would think that it would be very difficult to find a one bedroom apartment for only two weeks at the prices you have indicated ($20-$30/night).
Most places will want a longer stay, or if a short stay, the price will be higher.

i think the airport is at blame here as she has missed her flight now and had to purchase one tomorrow but an international airport is no mans land until you step out off the airport so showing you have a visa for the uk is prominent enough to board the flight if your destination visa is valid?
Not always the case. Even though in an international airport before you enter customs, you are still under the "jurisdiction" of that country. That is why some countries require a transit visa.
I am only familiar with mainland China requiring it, but it appears that Ireland does to for certain countries.
-
I think it depends on the country. I believe that mainland China used to require a transit visa, even if you were only going to stay in the airport.
However, looking at the Dept of Foreign Affairs for Ireland, Thailand is not listed as a country where the citizen requires a transit visa.
Schedule 5 - Transit Visas
If you are a citizen of one of these countries, you will need to apply for a transit visa

At this point however, I am not sure what could be done. I am thinking that the airline has a rule book that the employee was following.

I would also check some something like HomeAway or Air BnB. Maybe there are people going to be gone for a long time who are advertizing for renters, but maybe would accept a nominal (or free) fee for someone to stay for a long time. Just a thought.
I guess the problem with this idea is there are many many listing that you would have to look through.

Most of the 5 star hotels in that area have pretty big pools. JW Marriott (Soi 2) has a big pool. I think they sell day passes.

This is not close to where you want to be but the (relatively) new Marriott on Suk Soi 57 is wheelchair accessible and has a room such as you describe. Probably around 3500 baht/per night. I have a friend of a friend who stayed there and really, really thought it was nice.
Below are names of other hotels that have rooms with roll in shower like you need, but I dont have personal experience with them. (I have alot of experience at JW Marriott a few times, but never have seen the wheelchair room, though the hotel overall is very nice)
Best idea may be to call the below hotels directly to find out availability and rates. Good luck!.

As others have said, this is a fake story by the OP. I know some people who work on cruise ships, and the #1 thing is not to get involved with a guest. That is automatic firing by the cruise line. They may have a relationship with another crew member, but 99.9999999% of the time, they will not with a guest. For a third world national, the salary/tips is relatively good, and there is no reason they would but that in danger for a few days romance with a passenger.

Asoke and Nana are one BTS stop apart - about a 10-15 minute walk. Very easy.
I have never had any problems at that area at night, even as a female. Though, I have to say that I am not out late late at night.
There are tons of hotels in that area, so depending upon your price range, I dont think you will have a problem in finding something suitable. As you are aware, the area by Nana and Asoke are very active. Lots to see and do, both in daytime (shopping centers, coffee houses, etc.) to nighttime (restaurants, pubs, etc.)

Thank you for the update. It is always nice to hear that things are going well when someone reports with an update.

I agree with above. I had a watch that needed repair, so just looked up the service center for the brand.
