  1. "Guns should be illegal to own ANYWHERE"....

Agreed....There needs to be an education program and a shift in mentality to get rid of firearms out of the community. Otherwise we will end up like the great US of A. God forbid

Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Thaivisa Connect App

I dunno - always found Alaska to be a very safe place, much safer than Bangkok, and the the gun ownership there is considerably higher than Thailand.

  2. I don't think I would live somewhere I thought I needed a gun. Plus I don't really want to kill someone, well maybe some shitty people. But a taser I would be interested in. Doesn't kill, incapacitates the guy and looks really funny! Nnnnnnnnmmmmmmmmmnmm. Hahaha.

Where is a place that does not have meth, ya ba. It is my understanding that tasers may not work on a ya ba freak.

Saw a martial arts dude on TV the other day get tasered, still able to reach up and pull the wires off of him straight away, jump up and get to the firer of the taser in about 3 seconds. He did it with mind control or something, and a yaba'd up freak head might just do it as well I guess. guess he couldn't jump up if it had been a 10 gage shot gun though.

  3. Just out of passing curiosity, is it actually possible to buy Deet on its own? If they are mixing things up like Tom Cruise with the stuff in, surely the drinks get a bit pricey when they have to stick in a bottle of Skita-Killer into it. Also, if they are using off the shelf stuff, they will be other nasties in there as well. What is wrong with people who think it is a good idea to mix this stuff into drinks - guessing the poor lasses and most people don't have a clue what they are drinking really.

  4. "Does anyone know the background or any more information on this tradition?"

Yes - ignorance, poor education, and a culture that allows a small group of people to be believed no matter what dribble they say. I wonder how much dosh the parents also had / have to pay for the monks to cleanse the bad spirits?

Are you sure it was a girl? I have seen this hairstyle on a lot of young Thai boys, or maybe I just thought they were boys.

    Umm ok. whistling.gif

  5. I'm a dyslexic, agnostic insomniac. I lie awake at night wondering if there is a dog.

And,,,,, no. I don't think they do at all all become Buddhist. Religion is a very personal think (except to those yankies who walk about trying to force it down your throat). I would say that most farang living here that you might confuse with being Buddhist are playing a part to keep their GFs happy and if offered the slightest chance to not go and build a wall at a temple will find a way not to.

  6. I have already, this quote from Semper

Because you are not living in your home country. As said above, get used to these things or relocate. smile.png

Amazing, you can live somehwere, like lots of things, but if you have a issue with something you are told to go home!

The beauty is though that if you do chose to go home, you will have a key :)

  7. Many Thais are 'nosey' to an extent that we find impolite - but I suspect that it depends on the 'class' of the person involved.

Far more interesting (to me) are the Western manners and customs that Thais find impolite! Information on this would be greatly appreciated as I would hate to unwittingly cause offense.

Yes indeed. But my guess is that many TV-members don't care if they offend the Thais or not.

    Just my impression.

    Yermaneewai.gif

True. But offending Thais is always self-defeating. May feel good for the moment of course. I'd also say the Thais generally don't intend to offend farangs.

    You omitted to mention

" May feel good for the moment of course"

...right until the point where you get hit from behind by 10 of them.

  8. Colonised - No. Colonial powers used Thailand as a boundary between their power - to avoid conflicts between the colonial powers.

    Occupied - Yes

I feel I am in agreement with loveloas.

I tend to agree - the only reason Thailand was not colonised is that Japan was defeated. If they had not been, Thailand would be basically colonised. If this was not the case, then history is wrong in talking about the Japan Invasion of Thailand, and there would never have been a Free Thai Movement. Yet again, the same as the French.

  9. keep digging brother.

Meet my daughter, the one in the middle. 100% Thai citizen.

indeed - lovely little lady. Great way to kill a bun fight by putting up a picture of an angel.

Just out of interest, seriously, she has no other passport apart from a Thai one? Even if you are 100% committed to being Thai and staying here for ever surely you need to make a contingency plan just in case.

    She has 3.

    And thank you.

    Good -

I find it appalling you can pull out that secret weapon and take the fight out of a decent bun fight like that. There must be a rule against is somewhere.

Back on topic though, being asked Bai Nai, or what ever is no different to being asked "alright mate" when you meet a farang. It's just a conversation opener. But to be asked directly "what is in your parcel" or "where are you sending it to" elicits a reaction of "what has it got to do with you?". Perhaps if the locals stopped messing around asking this kind of rubbish, queues would move faster.

  11. Social norms I guess, things that westerners define and private and off limits are fair game in Thailand. Thai's will happily talk about having bad stomachs and getting the trots and how often they need to go to the loo, which you just wouldn't do in the west.

But i think you might be overstating it a touch. How well do you speak Thai?

One which I can't get my head around is foreigners getting paranoid about hearing the word 'farang' spoken around them constantly. As a Thai speaker with a foreign wife and a blond haired blue eyed daughter, I rarely even hear the word spoken. I often wonder if people are mis-interpreting other words.

I assume you follow the OP around all the time then and know exactly what happens to him on a daily basis then?

The OP has a valid point. Sure it is a cultural difference where Thais wonder about what you have in your shopping basket, how much you earn, where your letter is being posted to and what's in it but to suggest that he is exaggerating or making it up is beyond the pale. What difference does it make if he speaks Thai? Well done to you for learning a pointless language - cudos. But in this context it makes no difference. Maybe they are speaking to him in English? Maybe he has a TG who translates for him?

@OP - just ignore them. They all do it, it's not nosey but just the way they are. Just because someone asks you something does not mean you have to respond to a stranger. What we call impertinence, they call banter.

How is a language pointless when your children are 50% Thai and dual citizens? i would of thought it important to converse in both your child's languages for there future and your own, your post wins the prize plum award today on Thai Visa wai.gif congratulations!

His kids are not Thai or half Thai unless they are adopted. If they are, then of course it is fantastic to learn Thai for them to be in touch with their heritage. I assume if his wife was Thai, he would say Thai Wife, or Wife, not Foreign Wife.

"As a Thai speaker with a foreign wife and a blond haired blue eyed daughter,"

  12. Maybe it was how she said, or maybe it was how she thought.

One thing I'm sure we can all agree on.Who in their right minds would want to colonise Thailand, the first thing you'd have to do would be to organise them,IMPOSSIBLE.

    I would say it would be very easy to colonise Thailand. All you would need to do is the following;

    1. Give each house hold a pick up truck body (doesn't need to drive anywhere, so the shell will be OK).
    2. Park it outside the parents house, fill it with fags and booze and invite the local men to sit on it all day. Food delivered by mummy 3 times daily.

That's about it. They'd all be happy as larry. Mum would have her baby boys close at hand, and the men would do what they would love best. Might need to chuck in a brothel or two on a rationing system. You'd just need to make sure that your country managed to take enough out of Thai natural resources to make it worth while and that would be the hard part.

  14. I think there are a lot of people watching Burma closely. Has massive potential to shot past Thailand if the doors open up properly and become a regional power house again. but it really depends upon who they listen to and who they chose to get into bed with. The recent news about a load of thai getting banged up is an absolute positive for the country as the last country in the world they should think about having anything to do with from a financial / economical / industrial perspective is Thailand. You can see why Thailand would be interested in throwing it's weight around with their neighbour though; what better way to defeat a potential threat then to cripple it when its an infant? If they can ensure that the money they will inherit from free investment into the country is invested for the good of the country in infrastructure projects, and that no Thai's are involved in this at all there by 100% of the funds invested actually end up in the project as opposed to the Thai model of somewhere between 60-65% with the rest being in graft money, they will be the regional winner. First step would be to establish a true CBD, where all businesses will be together in a well planned zone with world class infrastructure supporting it. There will be a plethora of MNCs itching to get into there to pave the way as well. Just having a strong CBD would be enough to tempt many firms suffering in the Ghetto known as Bangkok to shift their HQ's. Burma / Myanmar has fantastic potential and I for one truly hope it works out well for them.
