  1. Yeah, that HK attack happened a couple hundred meters from my apartment at the time. Not aimed at tourists, although there would be a few in the throngs on the street.

When I worked at The Cambodia Daily newspaper in the mid 90s, these attacks were reported all the time. Not just spraying a bit in someone's face, more like pouring a bucket of acid over their head. Results were consistently horrific.

  2. I'm also planning something like this in the next year or so, but starting in Laos. (I did Ranong to Krabi this year, 325 kms) Would be interested in updated info as well.

Steve Van Beek has kayaked the entire Mekong but I think it was a few years ago.

  3. I have also bought film at Pro Color Lab, but you can never be sure of supply. Also worth checking 3rd floor of Silom Complex at Photo Gallery shop.

Also Foto File @ MBK and AV Camera.

As long as you are not too fussy about the specific stock you can usually find color neg, slide and B&W in various formats (35, 120 & 4x5)

Don't worry about x-rays, they won't hurt your film. If you want to use a specific stock, just bring it in.

  4. I just bend over and pretend to pick up a rock. Any aggressive mutt knows what's coming next and will hightail it. If the dog is anywhere close and I actually am able to get my hand on a rock, I will throw it as hard as I can at its head.

When I lived in Cambodia we would often use coconuts as they were everywhere. Applied aggressively to the torso of a snarling dog usually solved the problem.

  5. I went through this process recently and ended up with the Lumix GF1 in a 10Bar housing. Possibly more money than you want to spend but the result is pretty much bullet proof and the files are awesome.

I use it for stills and video. Couple of video samples
