  1. Hi everyone

Here is the situation - my friend -who is a Croatian national - is flying into Don Muang early evening, before flying on to Bali very early the following morning from Don Muang (12 hour layover). She is spending the night at the Amari Don Muang (which is connected directly by lift/walkway to the airport building).

I am aware that as a Croatian passport holder she needs a visa proper prior to arrival in Thailand - however as she is 'in transit' so to speak and not leaving the airport/walkway/hotel......will she still be required to get the visa even for this 12 hour stay in the hotel?

    many thanks

This is what I heard before, but are we sure that the fine is so high ? Why are they more greedy than in Cambodia ?

In the past I liked Laos but now think that it's a useless country where someone must be brainless to go live and face all te hassle,

Thailand makes it difficult to live for the poor but at least it's the best place in the world where to live.

I have lived and worked in Laos since 2011...and I can confirm ... I have turned slightly brainless...

I would not overstay in Laos... The Police is not a problem, but Immigration, when leaving, is a Huge problem...

You can always get a 1-year business visa, with a work-permit - there are a lot of companies offering this service - all legal - except you don't really work, anywhere... Cost is from $ 400 - $600.- per year.

You can not get an MRTV, unless you have a Lao 1-year visa and workpermit + can show THB 200,000 in a bank account (can be Lao, Thai etc.)

Using one of these visa companies to procure a Lao one year B2 business visa + work/stay permit booklet is NOT legal in Laos - unless you are properly employed by this visa company. The blue work permit and yellow stay permit booklets record your employer's name, your place of work and your job position. In all cases these are phony positions, often in totally different provinces to where you actually live.

If Lao immigration catches you out, you will be arrested and held until a big USD fine is paid - and then blacklisted and deported.

  4. Hi Jaymk

I live in Nong Khiaw, Luang Prabang province (140km NE of LP) and I can confirm that the slash-n-burn season March and April is as bad if not worse than in Chiang Mai. It seems to have started earlier this year -we have had hazy days for the past few weeks. Not as bad as last year yet (ash falling) but may well come later.

If you want to escape the smog, I would suggest anywhere from Vang Vieng southwards.

Its been a few years since I left TH to live in Laos, so with regards to the internet comparison I am not up to date. However, the internet in general here is good solid 3G. If you live in the countryside in Laos, you have to get used to power cuts and the odd total internet cut, especially in the rainy season. In the big towns and cities like LP, VV and VTE obviously less so. I use Lao Telecom for the an ADSL connection for my business - 2mb down / 1mb up annual price of 2.2million Kip unlimited (includes free new router and set up). I am generally happy with them. Unitel is another telcom (Vietnamese) present throughout Laos - with a solid, quick internet connection (they use fibre for all local access lines)...however I stopped using them becuase their customer service was atrocious and they don't speak a word of English.

In addition, a Lao Telecom (M-Phone) dongle is great...approx 200,000 Kip for the dongle, and 250,000 Kip for 30gig. For the accompanying mobile wifi router will set you back another 300,000 Kip.

    Hope that helps..best of luck!

  5. Quick addition - as the previous poster mentioned, there are agencies that will run and provide you with a Lao multi entry one year visa - at a cheaper price. However as was warned in previous threads - these are NOT legit, and you will be fined and deported if you are caught out. I am not even sure if these dodgy visas come with the Work or Stay permits....it is in these permits where your place of employment and type of work is registered.

  6. Hi Raro

Yup - your passport would fill up so quickly with the 30 day Tourist Visa stickers once a month :-)

You would be better off getting the yearly LA-B2 business visa. Indeed - the provincial immigration office will have your passport for 3-4 weeks (they can only send it to Vientiane head office for the sticker). I think the quickest I ever had my business visa processed was 2 weeks....Lao time ;-)

So if you do decide to take the yearly visa option, maybe plan in a nice month holiday in Laos whilst you wait for return of your passport with new LA-B2...?  :-)

    regards

I tried to make some more research on this, but didn't really get any further....

So how to get a multiple entry visa to Laos?

If you plan to work in Laos for only a week a month, I wouldn't even bother with a business visa and/or work permit. Chances are that the Immigration Police will never notice, and if by chance you do get a visit, you can claim to be a 'volunteer' for a few days. This is acceptable in Laos.

However, if you want to go fully legit,  your employer will need to apply for a LA-B2 business visa for you from the nearest provincial Immigration Police office. Your employer will need to provide his or her Commercial, Tax & Company licenses, as well as 3 copies of your passport and six 3x4 of your passport photos. The Immigration office will issue the standard application form and covering letter for you, which you present to the border immigration the next time you enter Laos. The application and covering letter is valid to present to the border immigration for 30 days only after the date stamp on them.

You will still need to buy a standard 30 day tourist visa ($30) to enter Laos. Once arrived, your employer will take your passport back to the provincial Immigration Police office. It takes 3-4 weeks for your LA-B2 business visa sticker to be processed at Vientiane Capital immigration.

LA-B2 visas are good for 12 months (expiry date on the sticker) and are unlimited multi-entry.

You can choose whether to have a 12 / 6 / 3 month LA-B2 multi entry business visa.

When you receive your passport back with your new LA-B2 business visa, you will also receive a small yellow Stay Permit card, and a small blue Work permit card - also valid for 12 months running concurrently with the LA-B2 visa.

Price wise - a 12 month multi entry LA-B2 visa will cost approx $500 USD (give or take...it varies between provinces) :-)

    regards

PS: no 90 day reporting required

  8. Here in Laos chinese plastic 'Sechuan noodles' have been sold for ages. To test if they are really made from rice you have to burn them with a lighter, the fake plastic ones splutter and melt into goo and stink of burnt oil. Disgusting and dangerous.

Plastic costs twice as much as rice, why would they make plastic noodles?

Beats me..as far as I know the plastic is mixed into the rice powder...they are made in China where the plastic must be dirt cheap. Its shocking
  9. I need to ship 9 ceramic eco-radiators from Perth to Laos. Each weighs 10kg and has dimensions 60cm x 60cm. I have been quoted AUD 4,000 which is ridiculous - three times the price of the radiators. I have about two and a half months time window - any one know of and have experience of a reasonably priced sea or air freight service between Australia (specifcally Perth/WA) and Laos>

    Many thanks

  10. Updated info for foreigner owners of a Lao company

No longer is it necessary to employ an additional 10 Lao staff to gain an additional B2 visa and work permit for 1 foreigner. Immigration allows you to pay $70 per each additional 'foreigner employee' you employ, regardless of how many Lao staff you employ.

  11. In my restaurant kitchen I have a double head 'fai daeng' strong flame gas cooker. This morning I noticed on the inter connecting hose feeding the two hobs, that there is some clear liquid settled on the bottom of the hose. I cannot imagine that is water....the only thing I can think of is that its the propane gas in liquid form..? Any cause for concern or same experiences from anyone?

    cheers

  12. True, I haven't read it smile.png

Good luck Thailand with your brave new world...that pretty much confirms your total naivety or confirms that you're taking the p*** out of everything else. *sigh*

I take it you haven't read Aldous Huxleys "Brave New World" Thailand had a similar type of Brave New World long before Huxley ever wrote it! you just have to read between the lines! to get the message!
