  1. Additional charges for customs clearance must be borne by the recipient; we have no control over these charges and cannot predict what they may be

    http://www.bodybuild...help/duties.htm

    good luck!

I know, that what i expected but the UPS rep. told me bodybuilding.com pays for all fees and charges. Whatever.

    Shipping fees and charges?

I mean import duties (import tax) and customs handling fees.

  2. Yes, but have you ever had to pay duty on these previous shipments from the US?

I haven't used UPS but have used DHL and FedEx frequently and on the odd occasion that duty is required, they ask to see my ID. Since you are a foreigner, the passport is requested as the usual form of ID. However, if you have a Thai DL, that should also be sufficient.

No, i only had to pay a small import duty fee once out of 20 shipments or so. The value of each previous shipment was also lower than this one so they didn't bother charging me any import duties, or maybe i've been lucky all the time.

  3. Customs clearance always req. you to identify.

For importing household goods even the original passport has to be sent in (being stamped).

Sounds like you are lucky and can pick up your stuff soon.

Thanks for the confirmation. The rep. told me i can pick up the package on tuesday if i send a copy of my passport by email today.

The stuff got here pretty fast, ordered it last tuesday

  4. I ordered a bunch of supplements and vitamins from bodybuilding.com a few days ago and i just received a phonecall from UPS it's being inspected by Thai customs.

The UPS rep. told me i have to send a copy of my passport so the customs can release the package to UPS. Bodybuilding.com will cover all costs and i'm not being charged any import duties (that's kinda strange because the package has been inspected and the value is over $200).

Why do they need a copy of my passport?.... so far i know the supplements i ordered do not contain any substances which are "illegal" in Thailand.

Edit: Mods please move this thread to general, i placed it in the wrong section.

  5. The visa is not intended to be used by those living in Thailand. It is for temporary business travel to the country and allows the traveler to only have to obtain once a year rather than for each trip.

To work in Thailand would require a work permit and most people would then be able to obtain one year extensions of stay from Immigration to stay in Thailand.

So when a work permit is obtained one is allowed to stay in the kingdom for 365 days without having to leave every 90 days?

  6. As Mario2008 pointed out, the visa can be obtained the "next working day" after the visa application is submitted.

I know that in Vientiane, visa applications should be submitted during the morning; the visa can then be collected the next afternoon.

If you are looking for a quick turnaround, do NOT submit your application on a Friday morning. I stupidly did that once, and had to wait till Monday afternoon to get my passport (and visa) back.

Vientiane it is then. I'll go on monday or tuesday. The thai airways flight lands 12:55 in VTE, then right away to the consulate for my visa application. I guess i'll be there around 15:00, is that too late? Can i expect my visa in the afternoon the following day?

  7. Do i have to show onward travel documents back to my homecountry at the consulate in Vientiane?

No, they don't require proof of travel. I got my visa in Vientiane on March 30.

In fact when I submitted the application I had a copy of an airplane ticket but the lady there returned it to me without looking at it. She kept only the passport and visa stamp photocopies.

    Good to hear that.

There is no restriction on visa exempt arrival - it is 30 days at an airport or 15 days by land for most such allowed nationalities. It does not matter if you have had a visa or extension of stay.

Great, do you know if it's possible to get an extension of stay on a 30days visa-on-arrival?

In that case i'm just going to fly out and back in the same day, 30 days visa on arrival+30 days extension.

  8. Vientiane and KL is next working day.

Just leaving and flying back in fo anther 30 days will be fine.

Ok great, thanks for your advice.

However, i read somewhere leaving and coming back wouldn't cut it anymore when an extension is obtained, and one should get a new visa from a thai consulate.

So you are saying that's not true?

Do i have to show onward travel documents back to my homecountry at the consulate in Vientiane?

  9. My tourist visa expires next week so i have to renew it.

I don't really care where to get my tourist visa as long as the consulate is quick in processing because don't have time to wait 4 days like in Phnom Penh.

What are the processing times for a single entry tourist visa in Kuala lumpur, Vientiane and Ho chi Ming City?

    - No visa agent, i want to deal directly with the consulate

    - Quick processing

    - No proof of onward travel documents. I have to go back home for business somewhere in July but not sure when, so i'm not going to book the ticket yet.

I have extendended my current tourist visa, will that bring me into problems if i just do a 30-day border run by air instead of obtaining a visa from a thai consulate?

I hope to hear some advice.

  10. I think the topicstarter needs to clarify what he means by "decent" before we can give him further advice.

To me decent in the phra khanong area is something like life@sukhumvit condo, Fullerton etc. but those go at least with a 6months contract. There are some decent places more upwards thong lor / phrom phong, monthly rentals at 50k up for 1-bedroom / 1 bath.

A lot of hotels like admiral premier have monthly deals at 40k/month, but remember hotels can be very noisy at night.

Worabori hotel, raja and anything in the nana area are places for sex-tourists, noisy low-budget stuff. But if that's your thing then go ahead.

  11. Their are still many places to buy diamond jewellery in Bangkok, for half the price you would pay in Europe or US, most of reputable manufacturers will offer GIA certificates with all their jewellery (On 0,30ct up)

If you already bought it and want to check your diamond, GIA is the best lab in town but also the most expensive. Some labs on Silom road like Tokyo Labs are much cheaper, but safe and accurate too.

AIGS lab inside Jewelry Trade Center is the best lab for color stones. Most of these labs will certify but not put a price on your jewellery.

What size are the diamonds ? Where is the shop you are buying from ? They didn't give you any certificate ?

There are very few chemically treated diamonds in Bkk, unless you buy canary yellow diamonds i would not worry about chemical treatment. Their are a few laser drilled diamonds but still much less than in the US (almost 1 out of 3 there.) Laser drilling isn't a scam, it can be a way for customer on a budget to get a bigger and cleaner looking stone for less $. It's not a scam as long as it's stated by the seller.

That's why you should always buy jewellery with a certificate containing at least the color, clarity, seperate weight of the stones, cut, fluorescence and possible treatment.

Stay away from bad cut as much as bad color or clarity. Avoid strong fluorescence diamonds, as they will tend to look blue or 'milky'.

The major concern i would have if i was you is on the color and clarity of the stones.

Most shop in MBK sell H-K color/SI-I3 clarity, those diamonds can look good from far but are absolutely disgusting to any trained eye. Stay away from MBK ...

Sorry for my poor english i'm a swiss (jeweler).

Danke shon for your advice. I will check out GIA labs and Tokyo labs.

The problem is i don't know much about jewelry and i don't buy it as an investment.

  12. I'd like to turn one of the rooms into a homegym. What i will need is a large set of dumbells, free weights for the barbells, powerrack, crosstrainer, adjustable bench, multi-machine (pec deck, pull-mechanism etc.) and maybe a few other machines. Can anyone recommend me a good shop offering quality brands in Bangkok? Pref. with delivery service.

  13. In that case the B-visa can wait until the end of the year.

Yes, but do be aware that there are some intricate timing manouvres required when setting up a company and then using that company to apply for your own Non-Immigrant "B" visa and work permit. For example, you may be a company shareholder without a work permit (that's "passive investment") but you cannot be a company signatory without one (signing is "work", ya know). Being a company director appears to be OK as long as your participation as a director is limited to attending director's meetings and doesn't involve any "work", i.e. signing documents on the company's behalf and certainly not directing staff to do anything. As a company requires a signatory in order to apply for a work permit, there's a bit of a Catch-22. Normally, a Thai director is required, at least temporarily, to get the work permit issued for a foreign director or manager.

    That's covered :)

Has anyone around here been to Vietnam to get a tourist visa? Hanoi or Ho chi minh?

  14. In that case the B-visa can wait until the end of the year.

So what about a tourist visa? Which country in the region can supply me with a double entry visa without too much hassle? (My passport already has 2 years worth of Thai tourist visa's).

4 months ago is tried to get a triple entry visa in Holland but they just scrapped it so they gave me a double entry. What happened to the triple entry visa?

Phnom Penh will give you double entry tourist visa.

Mentions it's possible to get a double tourist visa in Phnom Penh but only through a visa agent. I don't trust my passport to anyone in a third world country so that's not an option for me, is there any other way to get a double entry visa in Phnom Penh, drop by the Thai consulate myself perhaps?

If a double entry is not possible then a single entry must do but then i prefer to visit a different country. Anywhere in the region except Malaysia will do. I've always wanted to visit vietnam, how is the visa procedure over there? Quick or slow?

I see Vientiane - Laos can also provide a double entry tourist visa. My passport already contains 2 years worth of tourist visa's, is that going to be a problem in Laos? I've read a few posts where people were denied a new tourist visa.

    Thanks

  16. I'm planning to start my business in November 2011 so i'd like to apply for a B-visa.

How hard is it to get a Thai B-visa from any of the countries in the region? Do i need proof to show i'm starting a company in Thailand? The plans and research for the company are finshed but I don't have any official paperwork or contracts to show yet.

  17. Im getting it from the us and i have a constant speed of a full 12mb down (the max of my line) I love news servers torrents don't even come close. Yes i pay a little bit but you know you will get what you download and you don't have to worry about someone turning his computer off.

Which usenetprovider do you use? Usenet is so much better than torrents, you always get full speed. For torrents it's a different story, if there are no seeds in Thailand and the torrent is a few gig you'll be downloading for a few days.
