  1. I got this when I tried to install glxspheres but I can live without it if Bumblebee is indeed now working:

    sudo apt-get install glxspheres

    Reading package lists... Done

    Building dependency tree

    Reading state information... Done

E: Unable to locate package glxspheres

And I am pleased that Powertop is now reporting:

The battery reports a discharge rate of 9.16 W

The estimated remaining time is 4 hours, 6 minutes (batt icon shows 72% charge)

    Thanks Dave.

  2. Being somewhat challenged with computers I followed as much I could what I found on the net and installed Bumblebee.

At the end of the steps, I typed 'glxspheres' as instructed but I didn't get the colourful graphics to display, instead I got this:

'glxspheres: command not found'. However, it appears the laptop is now running cooler and the internal fan isn't running and battery seems to be holding.

  3. Not knowing your hardware...perhaps you need to install Optimus due to having an Intel/Nvidia system.

My Laptop is a Dell XPS L511Z and in Win7 'Device Manager" it shows both Intel® HD Graphics Family and Nvidia GeForce GT 525M for Display Adapters.

I ought to point out, this is 64bit machine but I tried and failed many times trying to install the 64bit version of Mint and in the end installed the 32bit version.

I'll read up on Optimus and give it a try. Thanks!

  4. I installed Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon with dual boot option into Win7 (my previous OS).

I am completely new to Linux but am quite happy so far other than noticing my laptop runs considerably hotter and battery charge falls rapidly as compared to Win7 usage.

I got "Powertop" installed after doing some research on the net and on each start up I manually set to "Good" in the "tuneables" tab but it all seems in vain. Power consumption still is excessive comparatively with Win7 and I only have Firefox running.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to resolve this or is this how Linux is?

    Thanks in advance.

  5. I think you were right Rob.

You have witnessed a valiant attempt by this bird to save his/her mate.

Perhaps its mate was mortally injured by a raptor?

Speaking of which I have this very poor shot of one taken from beyond 100m in farmland near my village.

    Cropped at over 200%.

I think it is a Rufous-winged Buzzard which I haven't seen around my patch in over a year.

  6. Robby,

Might this be a Striped Tit Babbler? Note that the iris is very light of color. I don't have books with me but don't Puff-throated always have a dark red iris whereas as Striped Tit can have a light/yellow iris?

Anyone? Will check again when I get home to books.

I thought so too on your initial post but Striped-tit would be smaller physically but it's a hard call for me at least and they are also more common compared to Puff-throated. If you heard its call then it would be unmistakable.

  7.

For the past 6 weeks or so we've had a Blue Winged Pitta hanging round or garden, collecting worms and taking them back to a nest. Then over the last few days there's been up to 5 at a time. Looks like it's her off spring.

To give you an idea of how close they are, this pic was taken from inside my house, at 400mm and hasn't been cropped.

I am full of envy. I've been trying for years to see one but still no luck. You must have some fairly decent habitat around for them to nest. As far as Pittas go, I've only ticked Mangrove and Blue.

  8. Sorry Jack and others got my M's and N's mixed up (spatulated finger).

The place is Nam (Tok) Sam Lan NP http://dnp.go.th/parkreserve/asp/style1/default.asp?npid=112&lg=2.

14 KM from Saraburi to the HQ on the road, Google earth gives a good idea of the area.

Also been through the photos again and see the Flameback is the Common not Greater.

As for the small bird I can PM you a photo I B, if that will help.

Thanks -found it on google earth with the amended spelling.

Might drop in if I am ever around that area.

  9. Nice report Robby.

Tried googling Nam San Lam NP but got no hits. Whereabouts is this?

That looks a little too big for a Puff-throated to me. Hope someone will come along and ID it correctly.

  10. Nothing out of the usual boring birds for quite a while now.

This is 1 of 2 fledglings from an adult pair that hangs around my backyard.

This guy scored a nice breakfast.

I really like these Oriental Magpie-Robins. They are a flycatcher of course and not a Robin or Thrush, as originally thought. In fact not enough is really known about the "boring" bird species. Everyone wants to just look at the rare stuff.

Didn't know they are considered a flycatcher now. They seem to be omnivorous and would pick up scraps thrown to my backyard chooks.

Certainly a more interesting specie than the 'boring' Streak-eared bulbuls.

  11. Final followup:

The Kaspersky Rescue CD didn't work neither did Hitman Pro.

Being annoyed with Windows, I tried installing dual boot Linux Mint17 and made a fine mess. But it is certainly an option I would be looking at and worthy of a new thread.

In the end, bit the bullet and did a Dell Recovery Partition and all's well again.

  12. I am comparing the Chrome browser on my Desktop...where everything works against my laptop where the issues are. I think I've made that clear right from the start. But I do thank you for your input.

Sorry, I misread your posting and jumped to conclusions.

The assumption that just because your profile is OK on the desktop does not mean that your profile is OK on the laptop.

You have a corrupt profile on your laptop. Just do as BuddhistVirus suggests and I'm 99% sure your browser problems will be solved (though you will need to redownload your extensions afterwards).

No worries AyG, just one question-if I create a new user profile on the laptop does that mean I end up with 2 Google accounts or do I simply fill in the same personal details as my original account?

  13. Maybe corrupted user profile. Try creating a new one.

Not sure I understand this fully being somewhat IT illiterate but like I mentioned, my desktop Chrome browser is working fine with the same user ID and presumably my user profile. The Extensions and Thaivisa Forum login 'remember me' function work as they always have.

Based on the above am I right to say my ID and User profile aren't corrupted on my Dell Lappy?

    From google support page.

    Exit Google Chrome completely.

Enter the keyboard shortcut Windows key +E to open Windows Explorer.

In the Windows Explorer window that appears enter the following in the address bar.

    Windows XP: %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\

    Windows Vista/ Windows 7/ Windows 8: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data\

Locate the folder called "Default" in the directory window that opens and rename it as "Backup default."

Try opening Google Chrome again. A new "Default" folder is automatically created as you start using the browser.

I'll give this one a go thank you.

Interestingly, I am now on the laptop using Opera browser and it too is not 'remembering me' on Thaivisa forum login.

  14. The laptop is behaving strangely. First up, my Chrome browser has suddenly lost all my 'Extensions'... the 'Remember Me' option for ThaiVisa Forum sign in doesn't work anymore.

Please try and get your story straight.

If you have a problem with extensions disappearing and the browser not remembering your login, then you probably have a corrupt browser profile and need to create a new one.

And if things are working as they always have, then why even bother mentioning them?

  15. Maybe corrupted user profile. Try creating a new one.

  16. also try Kaspersky TDSS killer and hitman pro.

http://usa.kaspersky.com/downloads/TDSSKiller you will need to put in your email address

    http://www.surfright.nl/en/downloads/

    Do you do windows updates?

That's the one I d/loaded-TDSS and the scan came up clean.

    Might try Hitman Pro.

Still d/loading the file Chicog suggested. D/load speeds are very slow lately on TOT WiNet. Nearly an hour and that 385Mbyte file is still going.

Yes, Windows update is on auto. Thanks.

  17. This is going to be a bit lengthy so please bear with me.

I have two windows machines, both on Win7 Home Premium. The first is a Dell laptop running 64bit Win7 and a desktop running 32bit Win7. I have multiple problems with the lappy.

The desktop is running fine without any problems (that I know of). The laptop is behaving strangely. First up, my Chrome browser has suddenly lost all my 'Extensions'. Every time after I shutdown Chrome, all the extensions disappear and I have to go to Chrome store to re-download the missing extensions only to have them go missing after every shutdown. Then, I have Malwarebytes (freebie version) failing to update nor scan. I get a message which says MBAM has stopped working when I attempt to update or scan. And finally the 'Remember Me' option for ThaiVisa Forum sign in doesn't work anymore. Although I tick the option to 'remember me', I need to login every visit.

For MBAM, I have trawled the net for solutions and have followed instructions to 'clean uninstall and reinstall MBAM' to no avail.

Fearing I have caught something, I downloaded Sophos and Kaspersky's virus cleaners and they both ran and declared my laptop as clean.

Also have run CCleaner and Spybot S&D and still no fix.

In the meantime, I have downloaded and installed Opera browser and the extensions work fine.

Anyone has any idea what is going on with my laptop?

Thanks in advance for all help/advice.
