  1. I have just tried to use my blue visa debit card from Nationwide in Thung Song, NST, south Thailand, and while the 2 ATMs I used next to the Bank of Ayutaya both told me there would be a fee charged of 0.00 baht, neither ATM would give me any money, telling me to check my bank. So a fee of zero would be charged (!) if I could get my money, but I guess (being nice here) that it's a bank holiday today and there's no cash left in the machines!

    Until tomorrow...

  2. 1993 Steed 400c with book, newly taxed and cert'd. Original pipes (rare), new rear tyre, forks and rear shock, new battery, reconditioned carb and engine in pukka nick. Been taken care of - you'll be happy if you buy this as it's been taken care of and in my name, and I won't ride crap. 120k bt ONO. No time wasters please. Please PM for further info. Photo attached. More on request. Nakhon Sri Thammarat (NST), South Thailand.post-12866-1259224825_thumb.jpg Oh Yeah, price includes lowrider shock and new saddle.

Reason for edit: beer errors, as the only reason I'll sell this bike is when I'm drunk, sigh.

  3. Definately!

They won't be getting any tax from me though, and neither will I be claiming the UK pension. The way the MPs et al have been stealing form the people for years (students, taxpayers etc), plus the low amount that the pension actually is, I'm better off not paying any NI contributions and never living in the UK again!

Maybe it started before, but even in the 1970s OAPs were having to choose between heat or food for the winter, as they couldn't afford both. Oh yeah, you can claim the NHS... And just what state is that going to be in 20/30 years time?

So the retirement age goes up? That's where English teaching comes in when you're 65...!

  4. This is my card's code: PCI\VEN_0106&DEV_3044&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_46\4&25700A26&0&4020 and I tried it in the above database, but no luck so far.

I also tried to install Avira, but knowing I have to uninstall the existing one first, I came unstuck. The computer shop guy installed McAffee into my PC (unasked), and I cannot see an uninstall option anywhere. I looked in the Add/Remove Programs, Start Menu pop-up, and on the antivirus console from the icon near the clock. No uninstall option. Any ideas how I can uninstall McAffee to install Avira? Cheers.

  5. welo - Many thanks for the advice, especially for the anti-virus that can be manually updated!

I did use the same PC and camcorder with this card before, as I said it was since the PC went to the local shop for disinfecting that I now have this problem. I don't have any other firewire devices to check as I only bought the card when I bought the camcorder, and it has worked fine before.

I'll take your info above home with me, check it and let you know the outcome. Cheers!

  6. Wow, many thanks for the feedback! I thought it would probably be a case of going to town first as only expensive taxis otherwise. I've used the minivans from Krabi before, from a place just near the Pier on the front, but that was a few years ago. It would be interesting to know if it's possible to get a bus from outside the airport. In NST, you just wait along the bus route and flag down the gov't bus at a sala to get on. Does the gov't bus or minvan going to NST go past Krabi airport?

Minivans usually stop to cram as many passengers in as possible once they've left the pick-up point, as the extra passengers' money goes straight in the driver's pocket and not back to the company. I've paid for an extra seat before when going to Penang to try and avoid being more sardine-like than absolutely necessary...

  7. It's a separate card I installed into the PC a few years ago (bought from Pantip Bkk), and it used to work fine. I have XP SP2, and no internet connection to use automatic driver recognition software. I have to use a web cafe to download everything, take it home and then install it, so I cannot even update my antivrus! Last time if got infected I took it to a local shop and they cleaned it all up, but since then I've lost the driver that used to run the firewire card. The PC tells me there's a card installed (no brand) but the camcorder isn't being registered, so I'm assuming it's the driver.

    Thanks for the suggestions, though.

  8. Hi, does anyone have a link to a generic firewire card driver? I googled and searched here, but no luck. I have no idea what brand the firewire card is that's in my PC, as I bought it 3 years ago from Pantip in Bkk. I've downloaded the few that I could find, but they aren't working. The Xp (SP2) PC recognises the card, but won't install it, so I can't use my camcorder (MiniDV) with it. Any ideas?

    Cheers.

  9. callum06 is quite right. I bought a PC from Tesco the other day for a pal, came with only freeDOS installed and it only cost 400 bt to pay a computer dude to installl the OS and all the other whistles and bells software at a local shop in a couple of hours.

I haven't used Pantip before (though I agree with ups about the staff!), and there are other shops along the Ocean/Tesco road that sell desktops. ups, have you considered Plug and Play near the post-office (opposite Nakhon Garden Inn)? They have a guy in there who's a native English speaker and he seems to know his stuff.

  10. I have been looking for a big full face helmet without tinted visor in the the South. Not been to the tourist areas, but to to Had Yai, NST, and all the big bike shops I can find. Not one big helmet. All they've got are Index size L helmets. Sure, the shops can order one for me, but then I'm obliged to buy it before trying it. And I won't wear a tinted visor in this country as I like to ride at night, and tints stop me from seeing the two-wheeled buffaloes with no lights. Guess I gotta go to Phuket, Samui or Bangkok to be able to try a big helmet before I buy... SO in the meantime I ride lidless - no cops have stopped me yet, but I do get a red face...

  11. The hotel is between the 7-11 and the Burger King cafe and it's called resort name removed, if memory serves. It has a pool and they are levelling the area at the bottom of the hill behind the place to presumably enlarge it. My mate stayed across the corridor from me and had to try three rooms before the electricity worked!

    You live and learn...

  12. I went to the a hotel in the centre of Ao Nang beach (surprisingly) and paid 1k bt for a room. Later I went for a shower and there was no hot water. Same several hours later. Mate stayed in different room and had hot water, no problem.

So in the morning I mentioned it to the wife of the foreign owner, and she just laughs. "No discount?" says I, expecting only an apology in return (TiT) and she laughs. I know it's a typical Thai defence mechanism, but it put my back up. I've stayed there before, and it was all good, and since then it's been sold and bought by a new owner from Scandinavia (I'm told). I really wanted her to say sorry, as it was obviously part of their renovation/handover/hotel improvement. I said I'd whack it up on the web, and this is the first of a few sites I'll be posting on. She continued to give me the "Do what you want, I'm still going to make money form the tourists, and you can FO" condescending smile. I did ask for her husband, but...

Call me anal, but all she needed to do was apologise. Not laugh sneeringly (I can tell the difference). So FWIW, I'd recomend not staying there unless you check your hot water when you check in. And I will be posting this on several tourist websites.

She just needed to be polite...

  13. FWIW, my Steed was legally registered in Nonthaburi, bought in Bangkok, and re-registered in my name down south in NST with no problems. I was even offered my choice of number plate.

My 1980ish Yamaha XJ650 Special is still being used by a Thai pal in NST, registered in NST, and the original book has been on sale in Bangkok. As yet, no takers...

  14. So all the ASEAN stuff is all nonsense when it comes to importing/exporting from these countries? Par for the course, I suppose!

I thought it might be cheaper to sell the vehicles in Thailand first, and then buy 2nd hand in Malaysia. After using them on a tourist import for a bit, though...

Although the big bikes (>200cc ?) may be more expensive to buy in Malaysia than here, is it safe to assume there are more reputable mechanics there? Over here, you have to run the gauntlet until you can find one you trust!

And as for cars, it is boring Proton rather than Japanese or "exotic" European in Malaysia, too?

    Cheers!

  15. I feel for you, OP, as I had a similar experience, but was able to rectify it at the time. Took 4 hours of my time, though...

If it's any help to others, when my daughter was registered at the local ampur office, they got her name wrong. I had to return the same day and wait till they closed before the "big hair" woman in charge would deign to use the edit button on the computer. Until that point, the guys/gals in charge wouldn't acknowledge that it was possible to edit an entry made that day. I realised then and there that if it wasn't right the first time, it would be a hassle later.

    TiT!

... and stick to your guns!

  16. Is it possible to import Thai registered bikes into Malaysia? I know of the hassles from this board of importing to Siam, but how about the other way? I did a search but I couldn't find much that's pertinent, so is there anyone out there who's done it? At least I won't have to worry about tinted windows... And I'm talking about permanent exporting, for use in Malaysia, not just a tourist visit. I can sell the Hondas Steed and Dream, but if it's easy enough to import... Cheers!
