  1. I've been on quite a few paid fishing trips in the gulf (never in the Andaman). Biggest fish I got was maybe a kilo. At Koh Samui (my first trip in Thailand) I went on one of the trips they advertise everywhere around the island. They had pictures of big fish, so I brought my saltwater rods and prepared myself for some deep sea fishing. They were going for little reef fish the entire day. A big disappointment, but I learned not to go on those types of trips. At Koh Tao we went for the big ones but turned up with nothing. At Koh Chang in Trat we went out at night... biggest fish was maybe 3/4 kilo. The best fishing I've had has been in a tiny little boat with a friend at night pulling in decent sized barracuda all night. Also went out with another friend during the day and we hooked 2 big king mackerels, but they told me not to bring my own gear because they had it already and the leader lines were all rusted so it broke each time.

The best fishing I've seen (I didn't go on this trip) was when a group of 10 or so of my Thai friends went out to these oil rigs. It's a long trip, but they caught so many big fish I couldn't count them. The deck was covered in big (5-10 kilo) fish. I'm not sure exactly where these oil rigs are, but if I go on another trip I'm paying the money and going out there. It looked amazing.

Also 7 Seas Pro Shop (at Bungsamran) has a charter boat that goes out of Pattaya. It's expensive, but a very nice boat. They have videos on YouTube of people jigging and pulling up nice fish, but I'm sure it's seasonal and hit-or-miss depending on the day.

  2. People were in fact denied re-entry when doing another 'out and back in' after there first arrival was on an Exemption... This happened to friends of mine back in July. These friends did like so many others - not knowing it was supposedly wrong. They had made three border runs and had been here for a total of 120 days... 30 days Exemption and 3 Extensions. When going for the fourth Extension they were denied. And from my friend's report many others were denied at the same time. They were forced to go to Penang to get a Tourist Visa...

I would think that now anyone entering on an Exemption will get no more than one 30 day max. Extension. But with the (announced) additional Exemption of 30 more days at Immigration - I have no idea how Extensions will be handled...

I recommend to my friends to just get a tourist visa ... so much more certain and gives a lot of buffer room when the vacation is planned for just over 30 days - say 45 days total.. (or perhaps not planned - just decided to stay a little longer) - with a tourist visa - no muss - no fuss - no bother...

Wow - I wish Thai Immigration had different names Exemption / Extension - to the total newbie this can get confusing.

Just curious, which border crossing were they denied reentry at?

  3. There are certainly less vans going to the border now. Some companies have shut down.

Most people going to the border now have visas with entries remaining.

There still are still some going for their first (and only) visa exempt entry after flying in.

That may not be a sign of stricter rules, though. There was and still is a lot of [possibly unfounded] hysteria going around about stricter enforcement of both visa exemptions and tourist visas. I know a couple people who just decided to go home and get a longer term visa. Some people moved to other Southeast Asian countries. Some decided now would be a good time to head back home for a visit and wait for this all to blow over.

  4. It is certainly the case. August 12th is the date they will officially start enforcing the rules for out/in visa exempt entries and has nothing to do with tourist visa entries or anything else.

I've seen you post many times that there is no information to support that actual tourist visas (not exempt entries) will have a crackdown, so visa-runners using tourist visas won't have any different problems after Aug 12. But this is the first time I've seen you post for certain that Aug 12 is ONLY a crackdown on visa exempt entries. Is this the case? Is everyone staying long-term on tourist visas freaking out for no reason? Where did you get this information?
  5. I asked if anyone else had these same issues with Thai girls, and if they ever tried to act on it. It was a pretty straightforward question, actually. Anyway, if an admin is reading this can you just delete this post? Obviously a topic such as this bring out the gems that lurk in these forums.

Do you really think you are the first guy to encounter this?

Be smart learn from other peoples mistakes not your own.

If I thought I was the first person to encounter this, why would I have posted this in the first place? Obviously I'm looking to learn from other people's mistakes, as I haven't encountered suicidal girlfriends before.

couldnt have had many GF's then, its called emotional blackmail dear boy, and reacting to it is exactly what they want you to do, its a game thats being played...

There seems to be a different maturity level. First girl I dated in Thailand was very mature, no problems, no threats like this, handled everything very maturely. The next two, not so much, and it's the first time I've dated girls like that. So I'm 1 for 3 on not-crazy. This is why I want to know how common this is with Thai girls.

  6. Unfortunately the girls completely miscall our reaction to this kind of threat. They think that we will think " oh she loves me so much she would rather kill herself then be without me, what a lucky chap I am". But what we really think is "run, run , run"

I once had an imported Thai girlfriend in the UK and after a row and silence treatment, came back from work one day. She was very quiet and gave me a letter. She said if I die give this to her mum. It was written in a really weird brown ink, and then I noticed several cuts on her arms. Alarm bell started ringing and she flew home a week or so later with the promise that we would never again say goodbye at an airport. She took it as meaning we would marry and either I would move to Thailand or she would move to the UK. That wasn't what I meant. I have no idea what happened to her.

Thank you for the serious reply, SDM. Yes, my first reaction was to hang up the phone and end it at that, but when it's someone you do care for that's not an easy thing to do. Sounds like you called her bluff and as far as you know she's still alive and kickin'.

  8. Never once had this problem with American girls.

One suggests then you date American girls only then...BTW Toto Thailand aint in Kansas

That's precisely why I'm here. I suppose asking expats in Thailand for advice on Thai girls was a bad idea from the start. Should've known better.

but your not asking for advice, your making statements....

  9. Oldest trick in the book. Ignore her and get a new phone and move. Just emotional blackmail. If she kills herself it's her problem not yours.

I quite like living in this small town, but if she killed herself I'd have big, big problems. Most likely with her father, who hasn't wanted to meet his daughter's farang boyfriend in the 8 months we've been together. Anyway, as I replied to the person after you, I never had this problem with American girls. Maybe it's a maturity thing. Thai girls do seem to mature slower, or maybe differently, than American girls.

  10. Well, in my experience once the dogs start to recognize you they may stop barking. BUT, as you saw, anyone they don't recognize they will bark at. I have one bigger dog that lives next door to me and she barks at anybody she doesn't recognize as well as runs after you acting like she's going to bite you (she's never actually bit someone), but my house is sealed pretty well so it doesn't bother me. I kinda of like having an "alarm" that may scare aware thieves. Little yappy dogs I can't stand, especially ones that bark at *everything*. My advice, don't do it. Thais are much better at ignoring annoying noises than most foreigners. One thing you should do, tell the owner of the house why you aren't moving in. Maybe she can do something about it...

  11. Wasn't there a dating forum before? Maybe I'm mistaken, but I can't find it now. Hopefully I'm not posting in the wrong place.

A couple (Thai girl, foreign guy) are friends of mine, but they split up. I still hung out with both of them, although separately. The girl would talk frequently about wanting to kill herself, to the point where I stopped taking her seriously.

Recently I (temporarily) broke up with my girlfriend. After it was evident I wasn't going to say we can try again, she started talking about how she wants to die and texted basically "goodbye, I'm going to sleep forever now". Obviously I'm not going to just let her say something like that and not do anything, so I called her back and calmed her down, but I'm wondering how seriously to take these "threats".

My questions is, in all of your expat wisdom, is it common for Thai girls to talk about suicide, especially during a breakup, and in your experience is it all talk or have they tried to act on it? I don't like feeling like my girlfriend is using suicidal threats to get her way.

Please keep it serious. These aren't bar girls I'm talking about, but normal girls with normal jobs.

  12. This is really sad. Sorry your family's holiday has ended up with you wondering if you should risk going to jail when you've done nothing wrong. That's horrible and really upsets me.

Based on stories and my own experience, nothing will happen to you if you overstay except paying the fine, but with the current and future rules they might not let you back in if you decide to come here again. I would think going to a neighboring country and flying into Bangkok before your next flight would be the best way to go.

As mentioned earlier, which low cost carriers (local) fly into Swampy rather than DM where you would need to get a visa exempt entry to change airports. I know Bangkok airways use Swampy but who else?

That's a good point. Didn't think about that. They do seem to all fly into and out of DM. Sorry, but I don't know. I only travel by land these days.

  13. This is really sad. Sorry your family's holiday has ended up with you wondering if you should risk going to jail just to finish your holiday. That's horrible and really upsets me.

Would they want to come back in after experiencing Immigration's "Discretion"

If I came to Thailand on holiday and experienced this I wouldn't be coming back. That would show me it's not a friendly country for tourists.

  15. Personally I think nothing will change even after the deadline

This was confirmed when yesterday I got my girlfriend to call head of immigration in ranong as my visa will be expired at the end of the month.

He explained that you are allowed 3 back to back visas but are usually allowed more if you explain your case to the official at the border

What visas would that be? Visa are not done at border crossings or do you mean getting a visa exempt entry.

You need to read the reports about the crossings in Ranong they are not letting anybody across that has one exempt entry before. Even some with valid visas have been turned away.

ubonjoe, obviously things are still uncertain, but do you believe only people who have used or are using visa exempt entries will be affected by this? If someone has been staying in Thailand for years using tourist visas obtained in neighboring countries but don't have any visa exempt entries in their current passport, do you believe they will not be affected by this change?

  16. The best thing would be to obtain a work permit and a business visa permit. That way, just in case immigration decide you may be working, it will be okay because you have a work permit. And in case they think you might not be working but are in fact running a business then also have a business visa. The only problem i then see Is if they suspect you are actually a tourist then they may deny you entry. So maybe also obtain a tourist visa.

Sent from my iPad using Thaivisa Connect Thailand

You say "obtain a work permit" like it's something you just apply for. How do you expect him to get a work permit as a self employed author? He would have to start a company or be employed by a company.

  17. I just had a conversation with a person who must know all this things about the visa crackdowns. Please understand, that i don't provide the identity of this person. I know this person since more then 10 years. And i know how is this person is connected.

For people who stay long term in Thailand with tourist visas will nothing change after 12th August. Unless, they had some overstay or too many visa exempt stamps in the past. That said, to activate the second entry after 12th August will be no problem. It doesn't matter how long the "visa runner" stay in Thailand prior. All this refers not to southern borders. Border to Laos and Cambodia are fine.

People who want to apply another Tourist Visa in Vientiane or Svannakhet, should provide to the consulate a rental contract, or a housebook on your own name or a certification of residence. Also, proof that you can effort to stay here. Show them copys of your bank book. The consulate want see movements on your Thai account. Money come in, money go out. For rental fees, shopping or whatever.

It may sounds ironic, because somehow, you have to proof that you are not a tourist to be considered as a tourist.

Some people will think, this is all bullshit. But i know who this person is. And if a moderator or admin think all this is bullshit, he is free to delete this posting.

Nothing is as bad as it looks.

So you're saying to "prove" that you're not a tourist, you should provide them with a housebook or certification of residence? Sorry, this is bullshit. The government plainly stated long-term tourists will not be allowed.
