  1. After 19 years here, I still not understand it, because  I was educated and experienced it in a different way ( I am 71 ).

My Thai wife tell me often :
"Why do you think your logic is the only correct way ?
It may be in your western world, but not necessary in my Thailand "

    She may have a point.

We often consider something as wrong, if we don't understand it.

Or maybe as they were never colonised they developed a super sized ego which leads them to not actually think through their business decisions and refuse to let anyone criticise them.

  2. I still enjoy going there, but I tend to split my time with other countries now. Thailand was my 1st county in Asia I've been to, so I fell in love with the beaches immediately.

These days I go to the Philippines for my island craving, which I think the offer is superior to Thailand. But I'll still try do a few days in Bangkok at the end. Love the vibe of the city and food options.

I probably won't ever do a full on holiday all over Thailand again as it's a bit of a rip off.

  3. why would the thai landlord raise the rent to something the bar could not handle?

just stupidury or is there some other reason this appears to often happen?

This is a joke yes? Tonnes of bars in Phuket have closed partly because of this.

The answer to your question is because this is how the logic of the Thai works.

'I own leases for 10 bars. 5 bars close so for the rest I'll double the leases to make up the loss.'
  4. I've not read all the posts above but have been a 'victim' of a few cancelled KLM flights I can share my experience.

1st flight from Amsterdam to London. KLM overbooked. I was put up in a hotel (not in the city centre unfortunately) and given €250 refund as compensation.

2nd flight was from London to Amsterdam recently. KLM cancelled the flight I was on and I was rebooked for a flight leaving a few hours later. I was given a credit note for €350 as compensation which I need to redeem by next year, or I can take €250 refund instead. Going with the former as I can put that towards a holiday next year.

Either way if the cancellation was out of your hands you should get something. I've had nothing but good service from them whenever I've had any queries so if it's not yet resolved, drop them a note and they will get back to you. I find on FB messenger they respond within an hour.

  5. Another one that doesn't understand punctuation burning off in March?: Not so much this isn't Chiang Mai.
Isaan is in the wet season buddy.: we currently are in June nearly July which is the wet season. Fycks sake maybe I should have made separate paragraphs I thought most people would understand that this currently isn't March. That was nearly 4 months ago and no there isn't that much burning off in Isaan. Your posts are as confused as you are. So enjoy North East, Central, North West, not Isaan on your holiday sounds fun.

Ok I see what you mean now. The way you wrote it, it looked as if you were inferring March was rainy season. And tbf I wasn't the only one.

    Thanks for your input.
  6. That time of year I would stay away from the North and visit Buriram, Surin or Sisaket that are is real nice in March.

Thanks. I'm interested in the Khmer ruins so have my eye on Korat and Buriram. Phimai and Phanom Rung historical park. If I had 5 days to see both places, would you advise spending more time in Korat or Buriram? Temples interest me but if there's more to see in one place over the other I'll do 3 nights there and 2 in the other.

On the whole it sounds like I should be ok to visit them and I won't have any air quality issues like say in Chiang Mai.

    OP- What is TR?

    Trip advisor.

  7. You understand incorrectly. Burn off in March? Isaan is in the wet season buddy not much burning going on. Mostly happens after the wet season and doesn't effect Isaan that badly perhaps you are confusing Chiang Mai with Isaan? Further to that I never get these posts, here's an idea why don't you go somewhere you would like to go and if it's no good go somewhere else. Instead of someone having to tell you where to go. Isaan is a big place and quite easily accessible for the most part, being 2018 and all. Also Phitsanulok isn't in Isaan.

March is the wet season in the north east? In which country? Everything I've read so far suggests it's dry and hot.

And no I'm not confusing chiang mai with Issan. Burn off may be worst in chiang mai but I know it happens in other places which rely on farming/agriculture, including Issan, which is I why I'm querying it here.

Unless you've missed it I know where I want to go. I'm trying to ascertain if those areas are affected by burn off in neighbouring provinces during that month. Perhaps don't bother reply if you don't have anything useful to say.

  8. As the title suggests I am coming in March. I've got a week, so not long but hoping to see a few places in Issan. I understand this month isn't great for visiting any areas which rely on farming or agriculture due to the burn off, so I was hoping you could advise if there are some provinces where this isn't so much of an issue.

I'm quite flexible, and if it comes to it I'll just explore some central areas instead.

How is Korat and Buriram at this time of year? I was thinking maybe spend a few nights in Khao Yai and then Korat followed by Buriram. The Khmer ruins look interesting.

I was advised on TR that river towns are generally a safe bet. Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Nong Khai, Chiang Khan ect...

As an alternative I was looking at Loei followed by Phitsanulok, however I'm not clear on what the burning situation is in those provinces.

    Any advice is welcome thanks.

  9. Nothing like a smear campaign to detract from the real main issue, which is, a year away from Brexit and we have made bugger all progress.

Yes this needs addressing but let's not forget about context.

    Labour has a problem with:

    Anti-semitism

    Brexit policy

    Tories have a problem with:

    The poor

    The vunerable

    NHS

    Social care

    Schools

A beneficial relationship with the EU

    Sacking Boris Johnson

    The disabled

    Police funding

    Prison funding

    Affordable housing

    Mental health provision

People being seen at A&E before they die

    People having enough to eat

    The young

    Student nurses

    Immigrents

    Preventing child poverty

    Preventing homelessness

    Libraries

Poor kids having one hot meal a day

    Magic money trees*

    * Does not apply to DUP, privatized railway companies, donors and wealthy friends.

  10. I strongly recommend to the FM to organize a staff group tour to visit Pattaya, Bangla Road in Phuket, Loykroh Road in Chiang Mai, Nana Plaza, Patpong, Soi Cowboy, the "massage" parlors along Ratchadapisek and New Petchburi Roads and pretty much every other tourist spot in the country... and then consider again whether such a "formal protest" should actually have been handed over at all.

Ah, the wretched truth. No Thai can handle it.

And then consider the scene for locals is bigger than all the above mentioned combined, and is available in every country around the world. It's never going away.

  11. My next trip is in a few weeks time and I'd like to make an effort to get out of Patong and explore some beaches further away to take some photos. Ao Sane, Ya Nui and Laem Ka to name a few.

My plan is to get a taxi from Patong to one of the beaches. Have a walk around, relax then find a tuk tuk or taxi to take me to the next one. Finally once done find a taxi or tuk tuk to take me back to Patong. I was thinking if it's anything like Patong all I need to do is keep an eye out for any going past. Will that be ok?

I don't drive a motorbike and don't want to hire a car there either.

    Thanks
