  1. take problem up with Office of the Consumer Protection Board if she does not refund deposit. (http://www.ocpb.go.th/).

Thanks for the adress, I'll keep it in mind, just in case.

I still hope it's all gonna work out just fine. It's a stressing time for me now (moving houses and stuff) so who knows, maybe I just see things the wrong way, maybe the owner will pay back without hassle? I'll let you know.

Unfortunately if she doesn't, overstaying in the room without paying is not an option as I have alredy booked my new flat and payed a booking fee.

    cheers!

  2. I communicate with the owner through the building stuff as she doesn't speak English and I don't speak Thai. So yes, they are aware of the situation but so far the have only been passing on messages. I wrote a letter to the owner today, explaining that I’m not responsible for the damage to the floor (which by the meantime disappeared – first the floor swelled, than it went back to normal), we’ll see what happens. My question is what to do if the owner decides not to pay me my safety despite all reason.

Trashing the place might give one a certain amount of pleasure but isn’t a solution I must say. As for the rent – I pay for each month in advance.

    Best,

  3. Thanks for your replies,

I tried contacting some private hospitals but communication problems made it impossible to learn anyhting so far - maybe insted of calling I should visit myself.

Is there anyone who can suggest a specyfic public hospital in Bangkok good for baby birth? Did you haver a good personal experience with any of them?

  4. Hello,

Here is my situation: About a year ago I rented a studio in a condominium building in Bangkok. Directly form the owner though the building representative was present while we were signing the contract. It was a one-year contract, two months of safety deposit (18k Baht)

Now the contract has come to an end and I want to move out but I have a feeling that the owner will be reluctant to give me my safety deposit back. Suddenly she become interested in al the complaints I had about the flat in the past -swelling floor, smelly bathroom etc. - when I informed her about these issues a couple months ago she took no action, now when my term in the flat is ending she informed me that I have to repair all the damage or it will be deducted form my deposit. Even though I have nothing to do with these problem as they are caused by construction faults.

The contract states that my money will be deducted for any damage to the flat except for normal wear and tear. I guess a worn our sofa and faded chairs is what they mean by that.

One more thing - the actual contract finished 3 months ago but I kept staying and paying for the flat and there was no complain or contact from the owner so I assumed she's fine with that. I also informed her that I'm moving out one month in advance, as stated in the contract.

Do you have any suggestions on how to proceed?

    Best regards,

    Mac

  5. Hi,

Me (Polish) and my girlfriend (Indian) are expecting a Baby - coming in January. We live in Bangkok

She doesn't have any insurance here in Thailand. I have a Thai Social Security card but it doesn;t cover the cost of any prenatal checkups and form what I know - jut half of the costs of birth.

I'm in the process of checking birth packages in private hospitals and so far I see that we'd have to pay form 20.000 to 50.000 B for natural birth and from 30.00 to 70.000 for CS.

Can we use a public Thai hospital? We're a bit worried about communication problems as we don't speak Thai.

Or maybe it’s best to go back to India and have the baby delivered there, with national insurance in case of any complications?

I suppose it's to late to get my GF any kind of insurance...

    Thanks for any suggestions,

    Mac

  6. Be aware that she is responsible for canceling her extension of stay the day her work ends and failure to do so would put her on overstay from that date. If just 90 day visa entries this is not an issue but for extension of stay it could be as doubt employer is making salary payments.

I was worried about that but we did leave Thailand in the meantime (for holidays) and there were no problems on the border. Also no problem with getting a re-entry permit for her. So I hope we're ok.

As for the course or study that could help with getting the extension on her visa without leaving the country – any suggestions? That would be a great solution as we are not to keen on flying while she's pregnant.

From what I'm reading here it's time to hit Chinatown in search of an engagement ring ;)

  7. Thank you, that explains a lot.

She has been working, got the Non B but quit the job recently. The employer was kind enough not to cancel her visa and WP right away. This is where her Non B is from.

We'll probably be Appling for a tourist visa or ED visa for the time being.

What about when the baby is born - what kind of visa can she obtain as the mother of a baby born and living in Thailand?

  8. Hello,

I'm trying to sort out my loved ones visa situation.

I'm Polish, I live in Thailand. I have a NON B Visa form my school (precisely - one year extension)

I have a GF, Non Thai (Indian). Her NON B is expiring in a month.

She's pregnant. The baby will be here in January.

I'm confused as to our visa situation.

    1. Should we apply for a NON O visa for my GF, is it even possible without being married?

    2. What visa will our baby need? How soon after it's born?

    3. Should my GF apply for a visa dependant on mine, r maybe when the baby is here - dependant on the baby’s visa?

    Thanks for any help!

  9. Added - Surprising that schools are opening for students when they are still flooded, mind you it is not about the education in most places but the money involved

Spot on here. I cant see her getting to the new location, and the toddlers she's teaching - even more so.

  10. Since the floods started I put buying tickets home on hold as I knew for a fact that the term would be extended, sorry to say it but your friend should have thought that too. If she bought for now till 01 December then she bought very quickly, since the second email came one day later than the first one.

How do you know that the area where the new school is, is flooded? Where is it?

How do they have 35K of her money?

Nevermind the ticket, thats not a problem for her as she's asian so home is not that far away. It's a different matter for her western school friends though.

I don't know exacly where the new school is but i know form our friends that the place IS flooded. And so is the place where my girlfriend has her apartment. So anyhow she'll; have to get thorough the flood 2 times a day, 6 days in the week. I don't think that these are civilized working conditions. She's staying with me at the moment, Sukhumvit area. That's I believe around 50 km form the place where she'll be working ( her former work place was 30 km form here)

They have her money cuz like I said the hold back 6k ( the 3 k number in the first post was my mistake - sorry ) of her salary every month to ensure that she complites her contract. Which, at this moment seems like a very good idea of theirs as If it wasn't for that money she'd have an easier time quitting now.

    best,

    MK

  11. Hello,

I'm writing on behalf of my GF (Asian, not Thai though) who's an English teacher in one of the northern Bangkok schools.

She's just received an e-mail stating that:

    - as her school is flooded she will continue her work in another branch, north from the current location.

    - In the next semester she'll be working longer hours and Saturdays.

    X-max holidays canceled.

All this comes a day after an e-mail stating that she's supposed to show up at school on the 1-st of December. In the meantime, she got a flight ticket home.

The area where the new school is, is still flooded. She's expected to show up there in 4 days, 8 AM, full on teachers outfit. For every day of delay they'll deduct from her salary.

Her house if flooded and I guess they expect her to swim to her new workplace, change there, teach and come home at night, again swimming through the flood.

I'm not even sure what to ask you. Is that right? Is this by the law? Is there anything one can do?

She's getting just 27k a month from which they hold back another 3k as a "contract completion ransom" which means that by now they have about 35k of her money which makes it harder to just quit.

    stay dry,

    MK

  12. Hello,

My GF (not Thai) didn;t feel so good recently so we decided to go to a hospital and get her checked up. The doctor did't examin her, just gave her a list of test she need's to take. The thing is that the receipt for these tests (RTG, blood etc) in this Hospital would sum up to 8.000B.

I's there an insurance that covers this kind of general test? My girlfriend is an English teacher, work permit and all.

    best regards,

    MK

  13. Hello,

I'm a teacher in agovernment school in Bangkok. I have a one year contract valid until31 March 2012. I have a non immigrant B visa and a work permit –both valid until the end of my contract – 31.03.12.

The thing is I probablywon't extend my contract for another year. And as my visa runs outthe same day as my contract I won't have time to leave Thailand andget a tourist visa or else.

What should I do? Is itpossible to extend a Non B visa without a work contract? What optionsdo I have,

    Best regards,

    Maciej Klimowicz

  14. Also if you really do live in Thailand why are you even on KSR?

I didn't notice a sign in the KSR area saying "only for tourists, no expats allowed,". And some of us have friends who came and visit us, and some of these friends like to stay in KSR. Except for that KSR (and Banglamphu in general) does have a lot to offer, even if you've been living here for a while.

Back on topic: I dropped the guy an e-mail. He wrote me back asking how long I'm planning to stay in BKK so he can set a date of a photo shoot.

Anyone else feels like sharing their experiences (or opinions)?

    Cheers,

    MK

  15. Hello,

A couple of days ago in the KSR area I was approached by a guy who introduced himself as a fashion photographer. He asked me if I lived in BKK ( the motorcycle helmet I held in my hand geve him the hint) and If I was interested in doing some modeling. He gave me his card and asked to drop him an e-mail and mentioned 4k bath for a days work. I tried to google the guy later but wasn't able to find anything of any value.

Has anybody got any experience with this kind of jobs? It seems a bit dodgy so I thought I'd ask.

    Best,

    MK

  16. Hello

First of all - I'm green, I know nothing about technology. I get so confused when I read all this 3g wi-fi, EDGE stuff.

and I need internet. I live in Bangkok, Udomsuk area. I have a laptop. There is no internet in my building, I can get something installed (TOT) but it's expensive and I thought I would be nice to have the internet with me all the time.

What to choose for a laptop? I got some flyiers form TRUE but as it's all in thai I dont get much from it.

I understand I need a portable, usb modem? Ar a thing called air card? What's the difference? What to go for?

A pre payed, top up system like my mobile phone would be nice.

What about the speeds? will it be comfortable to work with?

    Any help much appreciated,

    best

    MK
