  1. I'll second that! Hall of Opium is magnificant!!!!

It is located 2K North from the city of Chiang Saen. Across the road from Anantara Resort & Spa (Baan Boran). Route #? on the way to Mae Sai, via the Mekong route.

A well put together place. Just wonder if it should be in a more frequented location, get better use out of it?

ohh and for those visiting please close your eyes as you pass through the golden triangle, unfortunantly the 'tourist trap' has gone a bit overboard on decorating. but lovely folks there :o

  2. I didn't realize there were so many "young ladies" around LOS! Glad to know as I'm mid-20's as well. :o

I see plans are in BKK, I travel there for work every so often and would enjoy a meet-up as well.

I'm in Chiang Mai (any other ladies?) but get the feeling the majority of farangs don't gather much, mai pan rai.

I just hope to be in BKK at the right time!

  3. Interesting.........

I am in the process of re-doing my visa and wk. permit.

20 or so days ago I left my previous employer, they turned in my work permit and I reported to Immigration 7 days after my work permit was void. Immigration said "visa ok" I handed them my work permit cancelation papers, Ohhhhh. I was going to cross the Burma border but they told me to report to my new towns (where my new job is) Immigration office. 2 days late (9 days after wrk. permit cxl.) I returned and got a 21 day visa to re-apply for my new work permit. Today finished work permit papers and will report to Immigration to get a new Non_Imm. B. So in my very recient experience I was told the visa expired based on my work permit. Who knows?

  4. The Burma border is about 1 hr. from Chiang Rai. There is no shuttle but the red open taxi trucks go from Chiang Rai to Mae Sai (Thai name of town). There is also the local green busses for about 15-20Bhat that go from CR to MaeSai.

The Immigration office is on the left side of the main road before the border.

  5. in fact...................in my dying state I asked my THAI friend, who flagged the taxi down, to take me to the best hospital in all of BKK, to Bumrungrad I went. Her hospital of choice. She goes for anything and everything.

I also plan to go soon for dental check up and work, I'll let you know how it goes!

  6. I am a fan of Bumrungrad. Rushed there by taxi last Dec. for high fever (104+) and kidney pain. Spent over a week dead on the bed and received outstanding care. Went through over 10 tests from blood to chest x-rays however Doc. discussed all tests with me before hand. Towards end of stay Doc. pushed me to eat and walk to gain strength before release. Young farang with no family in LOS they took great care to ensure my comfort. Inquired about visa, in case need to extend, coordinated with insurance, +++. I will be a repeat patient, ….if need be.

Only complaint……those awful plastic patient beds that allow for no air circulation.

    Chock dee!

  7. As of today your welcome to "run" every 30 days however...

It has caused trouble for some as they re-entered, questioning officials as to their motives.

There is officially, as of yet, no limit on border runs but if a cap is issued, alternative?

If you every apply for a Non-B or other type of visa questions are likely to be asked.

I would not highly reccomend it as the solution to long stays. As a tourist wanting to extend your trip....sure. As a farang wanting to stay for a length of time, not the best choice.

  8. Please visit

    http://www.thaiembdc.org/index.htm

This is the royal Thai Embassy in DC, USA.

Accurate information for all types of visas. A taste....

  9. Jumping back to the circular - linear ways of thinking....

Bina you posted a small note about Navajos and their circular way of thinking? Can you elaborate please. Have family marrying a Navajo and wondering your view on their way of thinking and such ... Thanks!

  10. Interesting......and unfortunate.

December I was admitted to hospital, 1st day dead in bed Admin. sent in a staff member to check my visa, passport, etc... If expired or soon to expire they were going to extend it. Fortunately I was in the clear, wondering why your hospital didn't offer this service to ensure your legality while your were immobile and unable to do anything about the situation? Hope there is not a next time but just for any others check if they can extend for you.

    Chock dee!

  11. The sport of shooting is nill, clay pigeons in BKK and a few other ranges around if you want to stay in step. Hunting?? well I don't think its quite like Aust. or US where you apply, license and spend a weekend out. (Too bad) However if your really want to hunt head north to the mountains, visit a village and go out with the boys for a day of hunting snake, small rodants and such and then in the evening you can sit with lao kow and enjoy the barbeque! :o

  12. "SOUTH-EAST ASIA: Sex Industry Thrives, But States Look Away

InterPress News Service (IPS) - August 19, 1998

Researchers' estimates show that the sex industry's contribution to the GDP...... 14 percent in Thailand......

The report cites estimates that Thai women sex workers in the cities remit nearly 300 million U.S. dollars annually to families in rural areas. In Thailand, prostitution produced between 22.5 and 27 billion dollars income from 1993 to 1995."

With a 166$billion GDP for Thailand (2004), 14% (roughly) accounts for a lot of money and income, ie. food and necessities. I am not for the industry by any means but the fact remains this industry provides income for Thailand as well as those involved. Supply and demand. As with any other illegal industry a solution is hard to come by??? :o

  13. Good thread!

I am an English teacher and I also have my own private teaching arrangement.

I am interested to know what exactly is a 'self access manager'??? :o

Sorry if this seems a bit of a 'thick' question for an English teacher, it was a while ago that I completed my B.A.  :D

Self Access Center Manager, acronym SAC, is the unfortunate name given by the company. In the past employees were asked to study English and do self training in a room with books, computers.... They were to access the training center by themselves, in short no one came so they hired me to train and teach, la.

Still awaiting others answers, interesting thread!

  14. Chiang Kong- Good views right on the river, no real hotels but some decent guest houses. (Bamboo House)

North of Chiang Saen, Sop Ruak, Golden Triangle (GT) has The Imperial, nice hotel with a perfect view of the river.

North 2 km. Anantara ( formerly Baan Boran) Thai company, MINOR Grp. very good views and luxerous, but 5 star high end.

1 km. out of GT the Paradise Resort, on the Burmese side but Thai owned. No passports stamped, a bit different as there is a not highly used Casino there but its definantly right on the river.

Further north near Mai Sai are a few others but not along the river. LUCK

  15. I do live in Thailand, been here a short 1/2 year but going strong.

I live in the northern most part of LOS, on the boarders on Laos and Myanmar, Golden Triangle. (Rather isolated but Magnificently beautiful!)

Comprende! Outdoors...yes...LOS much to offer. From the beaches of the south to the mountains of the north. B/c flights are rather inexpensive I would suggest visiting the south’s' beautiful beaches as well as going north for some time in the mountain jungles. There are several National Parks, N & S, which have all too much to offer. For me up north, time is spent trekking through mountain plantations, long tail boat rides on the Mekong River and bike riding through rice fields and villages. If it’s outdoors...defiantly depart Bangkok ASAP. :o As your trip approaches make sure to post and I'll be happy to get more specific as to places of interest in the North! All my best.

  16. Hi all,

I too enjoy this "Ladies" forum, gives one a peace of mind, eh?

I am a SAC (self access manager) Manager, mainly teaching English as well as "on-the-job" training for Resort staff. Enjoy the job, love the people and appreciate 1/2 my bosses, the other 1/2 I could do without. :o

pebbz- Honor your decision and wish you the best of luck! This forum is full of info., at times halirous but I always try to ignore the gripes and negativity. Best wishes

  17. The visa:

From one point of view, yes the multiple entry is not necessary as you only head to the boarder to extend your visa. Single entry, 1 year.

However, for those who get paid vacation and may want to travel to Loas, Myanmar, Vietnam,......or even home for their paid vacation then multiple entry is provided.

Have it your way, any way.
