  1. One other question please. What would happen if a device is rated 230/60? Will 60Hz work in Thailand?

Much depends what the device is and what the original market was (for example, US 230V 60Hz kit will be a nightmare as much of it also requires the 115V neutral point).

60Hz motors will run slow on 50Hz and may overheat, similar overheating issues may occur with transformers. Heating devices will be fine, but any control system may have issues with 50Hz.

Let us know what the device is and we'll have a more detailed shot at helping.

Thanks very much Crossy. The device is a plasma cutter which has an input rating of 208/230 VAC, 1-phase. I some of their (Miller Welding) models have a rating of 50/60Hz and some only 60Hz. Some models support voltage of 115/230 and some 208/230 and others are 208/575. I'm trying to verify with their customer support the exact specs as their website isn't clear on this. If it is 115/230 50/60Hz, will this work in Thailand?

  2. Can someone tell me what the price is for a 250 gram bag at CMU and Hillkopf?

I just checked Red Cliff coffee and they want 199bt including free shipping. I've been buying my beans at Perfect Blend for 85bt for a 250g bag. Perfect Blend have fresh roasted whole bean coffee and it's very good. I used to buy beans form the roaster at Rim Ping near the airport but he was charging 240bt for a 200g bag. Perfect Blend IMHO is better coffee at less than half the price.

As KBTexas said, the age from roasting is key to good coffee so it's much better to buy it from a shop that roasts rather than from a coffee shop like Charbucks or Doi Chang where you have no idea of the roasting date.

Regarding grinders, a good low cost way to grind is a hand-crank model. They sell them at Hillkopf.

  3. I've grown habaneros and jalapenos at home and they turned out quite nice. I ordered the seeds from the US.

The habaneros weren't that hot and my friend told me that they should be grown in 100% sunlight to get the full heat potential.

  4. Absofookinlutely. I wear top quality full face helmets and they've saved my life on two occasions when I had offs here in CM.

Don't forget your gloves, jacket and boots. You're at more risk on a scooter than a big bike so make sure you scooter riders wear proper gear.

  5. Any of you runners out there have a recommendation on where to seek help in CNX for shin splints? I just started running again and start having pain after two consecutive days or light running. I heard orthotics can help, but I'm not sure where in CNX I can get them fitted and made. Also, I'm not sure if a Podiatrist the the right person to see about this.

  6. What about the one thats listed on " Meals on Wheels" above? I think its across from Kad suan kaew? I never been there or ordered from there though. But I am tempted to have them deliver me some galbi cause I'm just plain lazy to drive out there. :)

That place across from KSK near Discovery that mcgriffith refers to is great but is very expensive. Having said that, the beef is imported and of the highest quality.

Seems this thread has morphed into Moo Kataat rather than Korean food. Anyway, I tried the place across from KSK and found it to be excellent. It's run by a Korean husband and Thai wife. My wife doesn't eat beef so we had two cuts of pork which were about B180-B200 each and include a huge spread of kimchi and salad. The beef was about B100 more than the pork depending on the cut. We had two other dishes and got out for about B700 which I thought was very good value for money. Quality was excellent and authentic.

  7. We're having a problem this year and for the first time with fleas. We've had our dogs for about five years and for some reason, this year we are finding fleas on them and on the human members of the household. :)

We called an exterminator today and he said he would spray the house once a month for one year for an up-front fee of 5,000 baht. Now, especially in Thailand, I am very reluctant to pay for any services in advance. I told the guy that I would pay 500 monthly, but nothing in advance. The lowest he would go is 2,500 baht once now and another 2,500 in six months. I know it's not much, but something doesn't feel right about this kind of plan.

So, anyone out there have any experiences to share? Anyone know anything about fleas? Our dogs get the occasional tick, but we've never had a problem with fleas before.

  8. I don't know the name of the place but it is located in Meechok Plaza. The food is very good (Korean chef) and it is reasonably priced as well. The only thing is that it is closed at the moment for remodeling and expansion. Business has been so good that they had to expand. Always some Koreans in there eating which is a good indicator. They said that they would be closed for 3 weeks beginning March 22.

TQ, sounds like it's definitely worth a look. Where is Meechok Plaza?

  9. I was overcharged at Carefour for some sale items. I just scanned the receipt and remembered the price for the items because I bought them because they were on sale. The clerk asked me to fill out a form and they gave me the items for free and refunded double the difference. It was a nice way to settle the issue, but I rarely remember the prices so they could have overcharged me many times in the past. Because of that, I really don't have any confidence that they don't overcharge often and I don't shop there any more. It's a PIA if you have to check your receipt every time you shop. I think it's just the result of sloppy procedures rather than a scam, but the result is the same.

  10. This quote I loved. Anyone who thinks that breast meat is better than dark meat knows nothing about food. Of course you get legs, skin and bones in a curry in Thailand, because if you didn't you would need to add some canned stock to create the flavor of the broth. What decent Thai cook would ever used a canned broth?

Every chef knows that the dark meat of the chicken has the most flavor. I have never found better produce in the US than I have found in Thailand. All of the GMO and selective varieties in the US are designed for better travel and pest resistance not flavor.

So true. In Asia, breast meat is saved for dogs and tourists.

End of the day, I don't give a sh!t what someone else wants to eat, but to say breast meat is the prime cut is just ignorant.

Thai food is certainly one of the great cuisines of the world, but if you don't like it, it's nobody's business.

  11. Thanks all for the helpful info. I see those bottles around the neighborhood, I never knew what they hel_l the purpose was.

Try putting up a gate and fence or wall.

Keep your dogs in and other dogs out.

Any responsible dog owner would never permit their dogs to run around outside their property, in which they cause nuisance to other people, the same way as the dog you are complaining about, may become injured from fights with other dogs or run over by vehicles.

I have a fence around my house to keep my dogs in thank you. The problem is, the offending dog is like a ferret with slightly longer legs and can get through, over or under our fence no matter what kind of measures I take. :)

I'll try giving him a golden shower and see how that works.

  12. Does anyone know of a home brewed dog repellent? We've got a frequent visitor who comes into our yard and pisses on everything. My dogs, both males, who are buddies with this particular dog, then have to piss over his piss and there is piss everywhere.

I don't want to hurt the little guy, but i was hoping I could concoct something that is really nasty smelling to dogs and spray him when he comes into the yard.

  13. My home is in Chiang Mai but I've been spending a lot of time in KL working and am considering Malaysia as next move. There are a lot of things about Malaysia that are really attractive, not the least of which are the farang friendly residency and property ownership laws. IMHO, the people are much friendlier here. If you like the outdoors, the environment is MUCH better hands down.

I don't know anything about Penang so I can't draw any direct comparisons.

I guess if you are a drug user and/or whoremonger you may prefer Thailand purely on those merits.

  14. I just tried Prefect Blend, and I give them a rousing two thumbs up for their beans. I find the quality very good, much better than Rim Ping, and price is very reasonable. I haven't tried their prepared coffees, but as a long time espresso enthusiast, I highly recommend their beans.

Thanks to all for turning me on to this place. :)

  15. I've been to Hillkoff and they certainly have a good selection of commercial equipment and some interesting consumer stuff like vacuum pots and hand grinders. Verasu actually has the best selection of consumer machines, but they are really expensive compared to what you can get in Europe and Aus.

Does anyone know of a place in Chiang Mai that sells second hand commercial machines? I seems that with all the coffee shops opening and closing there would be an active market.

  16. I have a question: Why are espresso machines so expensive? Like 20K, 30K and even higher? Many cost more than motorcycles..

Any good deals around on a more affordable espresso machine?

A good espresso machine has a lot of heavy duty equipment inside and bling on the outside, and proper commercial commercial machines start around 100K and go way beyond. Decent consumer machines start around 18K, but keep in mind that you will need a quality burr grinder as well and they start at around 18K. Most experts agree that it's better to spend more on the grinder than the espresso machine.

  17. Does anyone know what's happened to Leibenard? I went my the other day and they were closed up and it looked like it's been deserted for some time. IMHO, they were some of the finest Barristas in Chiang Mai and roasted beans on-site. I'd be very sad to hear they have gone under.

For those of you discussing beans, the roasting is at least as important as the beans. Of course, Aribica is the finest, but two roasters can achieve huge differences in quality and taste. Freshness is also critical which is why if you value an excellent cup, you should be buying only what you can use in week from a skilled roaster. I've been buying mine from the shop at Rim Ping near the airport where they roast them on-site. I find the quality just OK and very expensive so I'm looking for alternatives. I will definitely try Perfect Blend when I get back.
