Latest developments and discussion of recent events in the Ukraine War
Well then if you have - that underlines my point that war brutalises mostly men of whatever stripe and in Russia a brutalised country to start with it's nasty brutal business. Also when I see all this Orc, Mordor nonsense labelling then I know the poster is a one-sided propagandist. You would have been, no dount , big on the shovels, washing machines, no toilets in Russia, will be deposed in a coup , running out of missiles, Putin is dying / has cancer tropes that were common way back which seem notably absence from current discourse.

This is a one sided debate though as I suspect your post will stand. I can show X videos of Ukrainian prisoners back in Ukraine reporting they were treated well and videos of Russian prisoners being mistreated by Ukrainains. But they will get deleted under the acceptable sources rule. So I won't. I want this war to stop and the brutality and suffering to stop with it , a war that Ukraine is losing and a war that is damaging the long term survival of the west whilst purporting to do the opposite. That's my line , period , that and the thought of an old man , me, sitting comfortably cheerleading a war far away where youing men are dying in their thousands just doesn't feel right. Sorry about that.

The Russians are nasty mfeckers to nobodies surprise as are nearly all armies in war it brutalises people and nations. Remember My Lai or Abu Ghraib or the treatment of Palestinian prisonsers in Israel? Good job the International Criminal Court exists to try these crimes , indeed it has indicted Putin amongst others Brian. I'm sure you are in full agreement with that august body ? If not then I'm not listening. And the Express , really ? Let's stick to the broadsheets lest we descend into imbelic progandising.

The general committed a faux pas and as someone of his rank he should've known better. During wartime, both military and civilian leadership must show unwavering trust in the system, and any complains or grievances must be discussed privately, going public with inflammatory comments could lead to decline in morals or even panic among soldiers. The majority of militaries has rule against such behavior, and If an active-duty US general openly and harshly criticized the army during the Iraq invasion or the Vietnam war he would've been removed from his post immediately although I doubt he would be jailed.

WAPO is increasingly bearish on the war or more likely simply acknowleging the real polotik of events on the ground. Sadly it's all about weakening Russia. Few people really care about Ukraine it's just collateral damage in the "Great Game". They aren't even an ally in the traditional sense and probably never will be. The west is already walking back the "as long as it takes" for "as long as we can" and Zelenskiy is right to talk about betrayal. https://archive.ph/pybQR This spiral dynamic — of unrelenting Russian aggression and ever-increasing Western military support for Ukraine to counter Moscow’s momentum — has been ratcheting up nearly 2½ years. Without a bargaining process, it might continue for years to come. And someday, one side or the other might finally stumble over an actual red line, which could lead to exactly the major escalation the Biden administration has been trying to avoid. In the meantime, Ukraine will continue to suffer and the costs of the war to the West will continue to mount. There has to be a better way to manage the most consequential military conflict in a generation.

The none western autocratic world is worried about their wealth residing in dollar juristdictions and the fact that the US is losing it's pole position with the rise of China. When you have record debt and there is an alternative financial world coming into being your bark doesn't seem so loud nor does your bite. Israel was the final shoe dropping in the international so called rules based order. Welcome to the 21st Century.

There's a lengthy video on my Redditt channels of a larger group of Hare Krishna followers at an ashram in Ukraine trying to 'peacefully' fight off recruitment soldiers who are arremtping to drag away potential conscripts. No wonder hundreds are dying in the rivers and forests as they try to flee Ukraine. Any sane person would. https://archive.ph/AtE1o Matviy is now in another European country, chasing an engineering career that he says would have been cut short in Ukraine. He understands other Ukrainians may criticise him, but says he was driven by a survival instinct. He had seen enough of the “safari” in his own city in western Ukraine, where draft officers scour the streets for potential recruits. He still believes in his country, he insists. Ukraine will continue fighting for its freedom and independence. It could rise again after the war. But it will be without him. “The country does not exist for me any more. There’s no way back.

Ukraine is grabbing men off the street barely teaching them to fire a gun and sending them to the frontline to face relentless barrage and probable death under ferocius artillery and glide bombs. It's beyond tragic and not a situation any informed person should condone. https://archive.ph/SxN3f There are no grenades for throwing in training centers, and there are no grenade launcher rounds in the training center,” said the officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to do so publicly. “This is the problem.” “We don’t have a proper training system in place,” the officer continued, adding that Ukraine needs its instructors to be taught by NATO trainers to condense the standard two-month basic training into one month.

https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/ukraine-is-running-short-of-people-1.2079923.amp.html Ukraine are on western aid life support. If the money stops the country collapses. It’s a conundrum for President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who is desperate to replenish his forces while ensuring that the shortage doesn’t damage an economy he needs to keep afloat. “We are now in a war of attrition,” Ukrainian Deputy Central Bank Governor Sergiy Nikolaychuk said in an interview in Kyiv. “It is very difficult to choose between butter and guns.” The problem will only intensify as the Russian invasion drags well into its third year and Kyiv is forced to fill a gap left by millions who have either fled the country, joined the army or fallen in battle. As Ukraine’s military struggles to hold the line against a fresh Russian offensive, its economy — which has lost a quarter of its output since the invasion began — risks being further weakened by the shrinking workforce.

Very interesting and telling comment , there is going to be a de-facto accpetance of territorial gains and frozen front lines. The Korean armistice and cease-fire is coming and then hopefully the senseless slaughter can stop. All maximalists are doing now is prolonging the war and suffering for the same end result. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c722zxj0kyro.amp But Ukraine isn’t winning. Short of artillery, ammunition, air defences and most of all, troops, Ukraine is struggling to hold back the sheer weight of Russian firepower, glide bombs and massed infantry assaults that often border on the suicidal. What, I asked Prime Minister Kallas, is Estonia’s Plan B if Ukraine loses this war and Russia’s invasion ultimately succeeds? "We have no Plan B for a Russian victory," she replies, "because then we would stop focussing on Plan A" - helping Ukraine push back the Russian invasion. "We should not give in to pessimism. Victory in Ukraine is not just about territory. If Ukraine joins Nato, even without some territory, then that’s a victory because it will be placed under the Nato umbrella."

The truth has been out there for along time for those that sought it out , it's time to move on from the binary good vs evil dichotomy and realise there are just bad guys and badder guys at the top with "we" being the former. It's time to seek the least worst option for everyone. It's time to talk. "Amid all the pressure to root out corruption, I assumed, perhaps naively, that officials in Ukraine would think twice before taking a bribe or pocketing state funds. But when I made this point to a top presidential adviser in early October, he asked me to turn off my audio recorder so he could speak more freely. “Simon, you’re mistaken,” he says. “People are stealing like there’s no tomorrow.” https://time.com/6329188/ukraine-volodymyr-zelensky-interview/

More westerm Wunderwaffe that hit's the stark reality of the front and that highlights the strategic and logistical nightmare of the vast menagerie of wetern kit, often outdated , sometimes in bad condition , without cyrillic labelling or extensive training hits the organised chaos of front lines. F16s will join that in due course should they ever materialise. We are heading to a Korean outcome with an effective undeclared armistice and frozen lines that will be fortified like no other and the new defacto Ukraine will be the result. No one will have won but Russia is never coming back to Europe and the Sino-Russian alliance has been born from those ugly ashes. Democracy and the rule of law are not a given , dark ages often follow a period of enlightment and that is what his happening now. https://www.newsweek.com/us-abrams-tanks-amor-failing-ukraine-1905927

My mistake you are right I was unintentionally misinformed, I simply don't have the time that you have to fact check exhaustively I'm a busy man. Killed and injured which is still probably on the high side but in the ball park. And I'll re-iterate the losses are most probably parity on both sides particuarly after the last few months. So my point that in war of attrition , where China tacitly supports Russia and Russia goes on a total war footing Russia eventually wins still stands. It's not just me saying it either. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-68778338 As a footnote ; The last PM of South Vietnam Thiệu went on to excoriate the US, attacking "our great ally, [the] leader of the free world". "The United States has not respected its promises" he declared. "It is inhumane. It is not trustworthy. It is irresponsible."He added, "The United States did not keep its word. Is an American's word reliable these days?", and "The United States did not keep its promise to help us fight for freedom and it was in the same fight that the United States lost 50,000 of its young men." It was ever thus. https://www.newsweek.com/russia-ukraine-losses-war-half-million-gruesome-milestone-1904713

These guys would all be punting domino theory at the time of the Vietnam War - this is just the new reboot.Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. Sadly I'm very busy in real life at the moment so will probably have to say goodbye, that and I have been offered a mod role on a much bigger site that I am contemplating.

Well I'm suggesting it's an educated guess, it's roughly parity and my sources broadly support that. If you add in the lack of air defences on the front line in the last few months and the brutal effect of almost undefended bombing sorties with FAB bombs on the poor pretty much defenceless conscripts and add in they are needing to recruit prisoners suugests their casulaties are much more than they are admitting too. I stick by my figures roughly 100,000 dead on both sides and 3x that in severely disabled. Horrific figures for sure and the sooner this war stops the better it is for all concerned. https://archive.ph/b7mKJ

Nor will China who has taken up the slack in supplying vital tech and equipment and mutually supportative markets. They know if Russia was to lose it's their turn next. Deadlock or not just ask Nguyễn Văn Thiệu who was besties with the US until he wasn't. Died in Boston in 2001.

I would say that's about right - Mediazona which works with the BBC - trawling all public records in Russia and other methods with meticlulous methodical approach is saying 85k so rounding up 100k is probably about it. Ukrainian goverment are saying over half a million which is so far from that I would question any of the figures they put out about loses whether personel or equipment. The number of Ukrainians is like to be the same the NYT last August - qouted below suggested a figure. The severely disabled is probaly 3 times that. However, it's estimated that in modern conflicts, the ratio of KIA to severely disabled is around 1:3. This means for every soldier killed, approximately three are severely wounded or disabled. The population of Russia is roughly 3.5 times larger than the population of Ukraine - they simply can't win a war of attrition just maximise the death and suffering on both sides, probably in the end for the same result. https://en.zona.media/article/2024/02/24/75k https://war.ukraine.ua/faq/what-are-the-russian-death-toll-and-other-losses-in-ukraine/ https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/18/us/politics/ukraine-russia-war-casualties.html While several U.S. officials and one former senior Ukrainian official said about 70,000 Ukrainian soldiers had died in the conflict so far, other American officials said the number could be lower.

While there's no strict timeline for acquiring NATO-compliant equipment upon joining the alliance, new members are expected to work towards interoperability with other NATO forces. This means gradually aligning their military equipment, procedures, and training with NATO standards. Several factors influence the pace of this transition: Existing equipment: If a new member already has some equipment compatible with NATO standards, the process can be faster. Financial resources: Acquiring new equipment can be costly, so the transition might be gradual depending on the country's budget. Industrial capacity: Domestic defense industries might need time to adapt and produce NATO-compliant equipment. NATO provides support and guidance to new members throughout this process, including assistance with defense planning, training, and exercises. The goal is to ensure that all members can effectively contribute to collective defense and participate in NATO operations. For further information, you can consult the following resources: NATO website - Enlargement and Article 10: https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/topics_49212.htm 10 things you need to know about NATO: https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/126169.htm

Either Putin has taken over the Telegraph or a stark reality is being reflected in western media and a new narrative is being created. The US has no longer the appetite or cause to trouble itself too much with European problems. It wants to move onto China which this conflict has strengthened the Russo-Sino alliance immeasurably and brought Chinese influence to the borders of Europe. My monies on Zelenskiy being forced into a peace settlement which he won't like or he is removed so that so one is in place who will. Just a hunch. https://archive.ph/3sfmW
