  1. If BKK - NRT leg of flight arrives on time and there's enough time for you to catch the connecting flight to ATL so will be for your luggage. At NRT they put the carriers of the same alliance in the same terminal (and same wing) so it shouldn't take much time for both you and your checked-in luggage to be carried on to your connecting flight.

  2. She likes flowers, public parks, bicycles, anything romantic. So, Golden Gate Park would be good. Skip over Fishermans wharf, but some SF touristy things are ok, for example Market Street trolley instead of waiting for Cable Car. Pier 1 Farmers Market, North Beach, Haight Ashbury, Castro movie theatre, Union Square, Pacific Heights, Marina, Golden Gate Bridge.

Why skip the Fisherman's Wharf when it's so close to the Golden Gate Park? One thing you don't want to skip is the bay cruise and most if not all cruise ships leave from Fisherman's Wharf anyway. Aside from that what I did with my Thai wife last year was to take a boat (from Fisherman's Wharf) to Sausalito. We spent an hour or two in Sausalito, had taxi took us to Marin Highland where you get fantastic view of both the Golden Gate Bridge and the city of SF (great photo shoot location), then had the cab dropped us at the foot of the bridge on Marin County side where you can walk the bridge to SF. Took us about an hour and a half to cross the bridge but I think you can do it in half an hour if you walk fast.

Also, if you're going as far as Las Vegas you can take a scenic flight from LV to Grand Canyon that includes tours in Grand Canyon. It's easy to combine LV and Grand Canyon in one trip.

  3. Can you estimate the volume (in m3) and weight (in kg) of your stuff? Don't forget that EMS only post up to 20kg per box, and each box costs 8300 baht. You may be better going through a forward company to airmail your stuff altogether instead of the big name couriers direct.

Exactly. Or even by sea if it's likely to exceed 50kg.

  4. Oh, BTW, I think Thais need a VISA to travel to Mexico.

Bottom line, is it really worth the hassle for a short trip there?

When I took my Thai wife to Tijuana, Mexico from San Diego last year the Mexican embassy in Bangkok said no Mexican visa is necessary if you travel within 50 or 100 miles radium from the San Diego border but beyond that you need a visa without which there's a hefty fine. Mexican embassy in Bangkok won't issue you a visa without a U.S. visa anyway and it's really hassle free compared to U.S. visa. No check on the border from San Diego to Tijuana, we didn't even have to get off the bus we were traveling in, but expect a long queue (half an hour to an hour) on the way back to San Diego.

  5. The rack to the left.... looks like it has harness to suspend components. Common sense says it's a no-no, wonder if it's any good? So that harness is made of rubber? Rubber will degrade for sure. And neither of the racks do seem to come with spikes.

Rack on the right comes with PS Audio's new Perfect Wave system. I would have seriously considered it had I not bought Marantz SA-7S1 early last year. All that Krell, Wadia, and PS Audio system (and CEC CD player?) had me think it's actually a pic from a show in Thailand by Audio Excellence. BTW that PS audio Power Plant Premier seems to be discontinued and being sold at discount. I seriously considered buying one myself but gave up the idea as I don't have space in my rack any more (and don't want to add another shelf to it).

If they have the parts (or for that matter if the model in question was ever distributed in Thailand) they should be able to send the parts to the dealer in Phuket who can replace parts for you. I think the 10% fee is what your local shop is demanding, not Mahajak. If your Denon is only worth 15,000 baht and if the problem was caused by speaker short circuit I wouldn't bother repairing.

  7. My wife and daughters who avail themselves to the 30฿ plan have always had to pay additional sums for medicine and tests, I'm always asking what about the 30฿

plan when does it kic in????

It's one thing you are eligible for it, another thing you actually seek help under universal health care. Are you sure your wife and daughter queue up at the right window (usually an hour or longer wait at Chula hospital) and right hospital designated for universal health care where they issue you a slip that would exempt you from all payment be it tests or medicines? Or for that matter do they have Batr Thong (gold card, but actually white in color) to begin with? It's been years since I don't have to pay anything after they scrapped the 30 baht fee yet I still get almost 20,000 baht's worth of expensive medicine under universal health care. What province do you live anyway?

  8. The social security health care system appears to provide subsidized or fully paid health care at private hospitals as well as state hospitals - By contrast the 30 baht scheme (now rebranded) was the subject of many complaints in the past with large numbers of doctors/medical facilities refusing to take patients because their costs were not covered (according to the broad page press)

It's the universal health care that is fully subsidized, not prakan sangkom. Also for 30+ times I have been going to Chula hospital under universal health care since its inception I have never once been refused to see the doctor (that should cause quite an uproar as there are hundreds of patients each day who seek treatment under universal health care) nor have I ever been refused prescription of the expensive drug I receive under the care.

  9. Great to hear. I had heard the docs didn't like it and were running in droves to private hospitals.

I read that in Bangkok Post. But when I go see my doc at Chula hospital I don't think he knows or even cares which health care I'm under, except for one endocrinologist who works part time at Bumrungrad and would rather see me at Bumrungrad than at Chula.

  10. My impression is that the public health care system for Thais is totally inadequate for anything serious.

not my impression receiving health care under universal health care as far as Chula hospital is concerned (as outpatient anyway).

  11. I'm not trying to suggest anything is improper merely trying to describe the difference between the two systems and convey that social security system health coverage provides more extensive medical coverage.

universal health care provides pretty extensive coverage too, from dental to heart transplant from what I was told by public health ministry.

  12. I think any Meguiar's car detailing chain would do it, at least one that I regularly bring my car to.

I don't remember what the price was for complete interior detailing but I don't think it was 6,000 baht high. Probably around 3 - 4,000 baht from what I recall.

There was one on soi 26 not far from Carrefour on Rama 4 but they seem to have moved somewhere in the vicinity (I think the first sub-soi to your right after you pass Carrefour when you enter soi 26 from Rama 4). I bring my car to Meguiar's on Nanglinjee (near TOPS at soi Yen Akat), not far from Suanplu immigration. For 300 baht (exterior wash + wax, interior cleaning) they do a really detail job but often it takes 2 hours or longer.

  13. I'm just waiting for a small shipment of spare parts sent via DHL from the UK.......... marked as spare parts with a valve of £3. Real valve £450 do you reckon somchai will know there some of the best pre amp valve's in the world?

I would have done that too if amazon was willing to declare undervalued figures in the invoice, but most decent online stores don't, let alone a listed company like amazon. And just because you declare $0 value (red flag IMO) doesn't mean package will be delivered to you duty free. They can and do make assessment of what the actual and reasonable value of the goods (but perhaps not the spare parts).

What brand pre-amp does that valve go into?

  14. DHL are part of the rip off. Send each itme by itself USPS. Zero problems. Don't bother with insurance. Another red flag.

Does US amazon still gives you the option of shipment by USPS? I didn't have that choice with Japanese amazon. I also never asked for the insurance but was included in shipping. On top of that they added freight and insurance (700+ baht) to the amazon invoice value which already includes freight to come up with the import duty. DHL said that is the standard procedure by customs department which the DHL custom support try to convince me in length but no amount of explanation had me convinced why they had to add freight and insurance on CIF value to calculate import duty.

  15. I know couriers tend to create problems with the customs. I always send by normal post.

When I complained to DHL that I never paid more than 1,000+ baht duty in the past they said my past shipment probably came through Thailand Post (or US postal service) through which not every parcels are levied duty + VAT. And it actually happened to be the case as I tended to avoid courier shipment to save shipping cost. Too bad amazon no longer offers the choice of postal service delivery (at least for Amazon Japan where this shipment came from).

It may seem unrelated, but I wonder if this has any relevance to this topic?
