can't have critical thinking without free thought and speech... laws and culture need to change,
Agree 75%. Freedom of thought is a society working out its collective thinking, but I don't think lack of free speech precludes it altogether.
Here's a bigger problem with this whole article & thread: What *exactly* is meant by critical thinking?

General incuriosity makes most of these suggestions a likely non-starter.
That which remains is scuppered by the rigidly hierarchical nature of the culture.
You could have the brightest, most well-intentioned, Western-educated teaching staff in a given public school. Dollars to donuts they have some insecure, tinted-glasses, greasy-haired, 50-something shatstack as the school's director who got the job through a friend and has NO idea what he's doing, and his general incompetence singlehandedly annihilates prospects for progress in that school. Said teaching faculty is too timid to confront him even though they know he's a complete dope and claim "greng jai" to save face. TIT.
It's not everywhere, but it's prevalent enough.

And no, western expats did not turn this place into a fun hangout all by them selves...plenty of people from all over have been visiting and having fun here for a hundred years or better. My guess is you're referring to the red light districts--sorry to break it to you, but sex workers and alcohol have been in Thailand for hundreds of years!
No need to apologize for breaking it to him when you're wrong yourself. Westerners DID give Thailand int'l renown as the place for a man to find a certain fulfillment half a century ago. You're right in saying that sex workers have been in Thailand for 100's of years, but that's as a domestic industry, same as it is in Burma, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, et al. Par for the course. There wasn't a sharp increase in red light districts catering to foreigners here in Thailand until Songkram Vietnam. That fact propelled Thailand into getting its reputation as adult Disney World.

I'm not sure whether to attribute this weirdness to spineless journalists, or if there's something being indirectly communicated by K.Prawit.
It's one level of opaque to say to say "Regarding K.Surachate, I'm not taking any questions, and I have no comment."
It's a whole different kettle of opaqueness *to comment on how certain it is that the guy is no longer allowed to continue his career* yet not be the least bit forthcoming with even ostensible reasons.
It comes off as arrogant in the extreme, but I might be misreading it.

During the French colonial days, French authorities wanted to shore up the growing rat problem in Vietnam and so put together a program saying "you'll get these many francs for each rat you can prove you killed."
What was the result? Vietnamese made a nice income by raising rats and killing them.
People generally aren't good at considering what sort of behavior their ideas incentivize.

There's dumb, and there's deep down, obnoxious dumb. We all do dumb things. But when you disrespect the intelligence of others - ie those who know you're cheating - and combine that with a vice like greed or ambition having already been very publicly caught, you're the latter.
All Thailand-based games, scrabble clubs, event planners should wash their hands of the guy lest the stain stick to associated Thai organizations rather than just him. What a jerk.

Kudos to Thaiger for drawing attention to this, and pointing out social media's role in amplifying awareness of it.
At first, I thought... "Geez, there are 20 billion better images you could have used to showcase Thai tourist destinations?" and then after reading the article... I was... just..... "Oh."

First intelligent post in this thread. All this righteous bluster about police insouciance, tell me... what kind of police state would it take to stop kids upcountry too bored of the online games from proving their fearlessness by racing up and down the local streets of every hamlet around Thailand? Ever occur to you grumpy knuckleheads how many cops you'd need in order to monitor *all* or even most of the country roads these kids kill themselves on? Cameras, you say? Kids will just cover up their plates.
Tragic as it is, there is no fixing this problem because teenage kids need some stimulation, they need a way to get the girls' attention. The only activities that check both those boxes are soccer and driving the motorbike mommy bought for them in a way that makes people notice them.
There will be hand-wringing in editorials and cursory measures taken by different levels of govt to maintain the charade of interest in the problem. Bet the mortgage these statistics won't change appreciably, ever. You can't force kids whose programming is predeterminism to suddenly take measures to protect and value their own lives more.

All this whining about the short sentence and how much longer the sentence would be in a country with less corruption.
Thai prisons are infinitely worse than your average Western penitentiary. After 4-6 months this guy's mental state will never be what it once was. Four years in a Thai prison is sufficient punishment since it was not a premeditated murder, as reckless as it may have been. This guy is going to be fcudek up for the rest of his days after that stretch.

She's excused from any responsibility for her misadventure since she comes from a culture where people definitely do NOT make decisions about people based on their looks. There's just no way she could have seen this coming.
