  1. What is the asking them? Non immigrant O visa (single or multi entry)? Non immigrant O-A visa (single or multi entry)? Or Thai Immigration requirements for yearly extension of stay within Thailand?

As said O-A visa or Extension will require 800k/65k/combination to meet 800k per year under current regulations (since 1998).

Well my France folks just said a Retirement Visa so not sure if that's O or O-A or what.

They want to leave France and retire in Thailand.

Thank you all for the good information

  2. Well... without freedom of thought and of speech you have no freedoms at all. Wasn't there some political party rising up in the late 1930's in Europe someplace that banned books and free speech? Wonder what ever happened to them?....Oh yeah, now I recall: There was a mass exodus of the greater intelligencia leaving that country. Wonder why? Anyway whatever country that was didn't seem to make it very far. Wonder why? Guess those greater intelligencia folks made a positive difference someplace else. Wonder where? Can censorship be equated with human progress? Wonder what the opposite of the word "progress" would be? Bet nobody here feels free enough to render any tangible answer or response to those questions.

Isn't Fear a wonderful paradigm to live under? Hmmm...wonder what the opposite of Freedom is? Isn't it a word that has the letters T and Y at either end of it? Hey whatever happened to Louis the XIV anyway?

  3. The Thais are very quick to copy things, not thinking for themselves or others very much or possess any originality or creative thinking.

Given all that all they needed to do was copy the airports of Singapore, Hong Kong, and Kuala Lumpur. Ironic that they can produce counterfeit luggage, clothing, software, and even a counterfeit life yet cannot perform the same task in building an airport.

  4. Does anyone here live in MHS? If so what are living conditions like re: housing, food, etc. Am currently living in Samui and have been to MHS twice on motorcycle and like the area and am considering a move there but don't want to make any big mistakes. Anyone?

  5. yeah, i keep hearing more and more bad stories about the maniacal hopped up drivers of minibuses speeding from surat to ranong. and then that boat trip from ranong into burma. people having to bail out their boats and being stranded in the middle by a storm etc. as they do not provide lifejackets you might be better off going the malaysia route. you can get a longer visa there too if you need it.

The Ranong-Burma is a visa-run stamp only, no Thai consulate is there so any new visa needed the nearest from Samui is the trip to Kota Bharu Malaysia (passing through the Yala province in Thailand!). Herbert (the Austrian) offers this trip each Tuesday afternoon returning very early to Samui on Thursdays. Otherwise new visas can be obtained on your own by flying to KL on Fireflyz Airlines.

Or in Penang by surface - a lengthy trip.

  6. FireFly is a discount subsidary of MAS and is based in Penang. They operate a daily flight from Penang to both Koh Samui and Phuket using Folker 44 seat overhead winged turboprop aircraft. The FireFly flight departs from Samui daily at 16:40 and has an easy check-in process at the old terminal (now International). The flight takes an hour and 20 minuts. Penang is one hour ahead from Thailand time.

When booking online beware of a Phishing website that will intercept you. Just wait it out and you will eventually get the "Real" FireFly website. Your browser will warn you of a certificate mismatch. Just keep looking at the screen until it goes away. Do not give your credit card details until it does go away.

I did the process online, printed out my itinerary, took that to the airport where they looked at my passport and gave me a boarding pass and zippo....off to Penang. My round trip airfare was:

THB 799. each way (raw air fare)

It totaled out with a lot of add-on taxes to THB 4,028. But you will get a slightly different air fare depending on how far out in time you book ahead. My friend booked 3 days ahead and paid THB 5,400. I booked two weeks in advance which allowed no changes. the lowest fare is a "Q" fare. The next higher fare is an "S" fare (wich allows a change).

Hope this is helpful to you all.

I manage the Baan Shadis Resort on Soi 5 in Mae Nam and have a travel and airline background.

If anyone needs help on this FireFly deal I will be happy to be of assistance. No charge for the first 5 minutes of help :-)

My office number is 077-247-647 (when I am in there)

Anyone needing a accommodations in Mae Nam, the resort prices are 1,500 per night, 5,500 per week, 15.000 per month.

The five villa's are large well kept quiet secluded and in a thick tropical garden - privacy rules.

  7. I took over from an Australian manager of a small resort on Ko Samui. I inherited two Thai staffers who work on the grounds and keeep the bungalows clean. My Western standards of cleanliness is higher than what the Thai's are used to.

What I do is start a job, get about 30-40 % into it knowing the Thai staffers are watching, then I hand the shovel or rake or whatever to the senior Thai staffer and ask him to finish the job and have the other guy help you (Up To You To Do It) This generally works. Also I withhold 15% of the pay each month with the promise that at the end of the year this 15% will be given in one lump sum plus a 5% earned interest. This keeps them here and prevents "run-a-ways".

I think when you show you are willing to do the grunt work as a manager then hand it over to a staffer to finish gives them a sense of self respect and they gain face as well.

There is a fine line between being "equal" to your Thai staffer yet you must always keep a respectable distance and formality being the manager so you don't lose their respect for your senior position.

Cultural differences are there but I've discovered humans are basically the same in Arabia, Thailand, or Zanbouli Land. Respecting their humanity yet letting them know you expect a high level of performance assures loyality. An occasional unexpected reward for a job well done goes a long way also. I give a 100 Baht note occasionally to good performance but I don't do it often to where it is expected. That 100 Baht as small as it is goes a long way.

  8. My wife is very savy, tech wise. But she always unplugs the microwave oven after using it. Her mother does the same thing. Is this common?

Problem is when she is doing the ironing and the phone rings.......ouch :o

When Helen Keller did that she burned her ear - She answered the iron.

Her other ear also got burned because they called her back.

  9. You poor buggers up there in Issan...Here on Samui you can find almost anything if you look and can fork over the price. Even Euro chocolate is stocked in Tops here and loads of legit coffee beans including Sumatra.

I couldn't find Lao Beer in BKK but its all over the Island here.

Samui is strange indeed but in a good way.

Real French bread; You know, that thick crusty kind you find in France and San Francisco. A German baker here is trying and almost got it.

But I sure would like to sink my teeth into a thick top sirloin hamburger sometime, but that, I'm afraid, is not going to happen even on Samui.

  10. A very thirsty Arab was walking in the desert near Israel. He spots in the distance a Jewish man who has necties on a card table. "I'm very thirsty do you have some water" the Arab says. "Buy a necktie" the Jewish man replies. "A necktie! Are you mad, this is the desert, and I need water!" Oh, Ok you don't want to buy a necktie. There is a restaurant a mile over that next sand dune over there, they would have water for you" The Arab thanks the Jewish man and walks over the sand dune.

An hour or so later the Jewish man sees the Arab crawling back over the sand dune, exhausted. "Whats the matter, didn't the restaurant have any water?" The Arab replies, "Yes there was plenty of water but your brother would not let me in the restaurant without a tie"

  11. I pay B1100 a month for TOT's Gold Cyber at 1,000 speed. I get near that from my PC here in Chatuchak BKK to the TOT server but from TOT"s server to any Internet site I get from 70kb to 300 kb depending on traffic. 85% of the worlds websites and servers are located in North America. Streaming video needs 350k minimun sustained, streaming radio 96 to 128 k - I get this about 10% of the time at best. (But I'm paying for 1,000 speed!!)

What they call Internet in Thailand is really Intranet - Inter-net is international. North America is the default for the Internet. All traffic that is a simple dot com or dot net goes to Sunnyvale first (California)

When you see a dot co dot th or a co dot my or a co dot de those are servers located in those countries. Within those countries those sites are Intra-net, not Inter-net. I dont think TOT knows the difference.

go here: www.internettrafficreport.com It's called an ITR client and gives you general status in real time as to the regions of the world that are reporting traffic and see where the weakest place is.

Download the ITR client - its a small program and ping to your hearts content. For all you geeks out there you'll love it.

  12. Actually this is good thinking. It would give the new airport experience before trying to manage the big international flights. All new airports have kinks and snags and a two week period of unkinking and unsnagging using domestic flights is a smart move.

The Denver airport was "fully prepared" when it opened yet the baggage system, a great technical wonder, took months or work out the kinks much to the annoyance of passengers.

And....This is Thailand - How many things work efficiently here? It's going to take a long time for the new airport to become the glow of Thai aviation. There will be problems anyway, even unanticipated ones no matter how many dry-runs the place gets.

I worked at JFK airport for 3 years in the early 70's. That airport tested itself to no end yet when the first flight unloaded the jetway got stuck and the doors to the gate area would not open. After 90 more days the place worked fine.

SIN, KLI & HKG had opening difficulties as well, they eventually got solved through experience. When Disney Land opened long ago practically nothing worked - now the place runs like glass.

How many of us work efficiently on the first week of a new job? Not I.

  13. Moving from BKK to Mae Nam area in October. Currently in BKK and have Hi-Speed (1,000kbps) service from TOT. Not always happy with the speed however and seldom get over 300k.

My question is: What is the situation on Samui on hi speed internet? Is there a choice of ISP's?

Is there a choice of speed packages available? Is the whole island equiped for hi speed or only the main towns? I have a dual core P4 desktop that I will bring and use it for streaming video and audio (webcasts) How's that reception on the Island? Can any ISP offer a consistant speed of at least 350K without going below that speed?

Appreciate any info anyone is willing to give to me, and thanks.

  14. On the back of your pc tower are stereo miniplugs for audio in/out.

You can use your PC as an audio component same as you would a tape deck for example. I run twin audio leads in and out of my PC from my main stereo system using the tape monitor switch or any input would do

so I get full sound from my PC through my stereo system. I also record onto my hard drive this way, putting cassette tape onto digital and make a CD from that and through away my old casettes (or records if you still have those)
