  1. Maybe its just me living out here in the Styx. But why do folk have to drink after midnight , who leaves work at ,say , 11pm and need to find a drink somewhere ? Surely you can eat dinner ,go out at 8pm and drink merrliy 'till midnight, Who is desperate to need the bar to prop up for another hour ?

I leave work at 11pm when dealing with Europe and i know some other people that do the same.

  2. Me thinks...the same your GF's sister thinks...she should keep her distance and not encourage you...she is loyal to her sister...not you...wants to protect that relationship...not develop one with you...

Try not to take it personally...she is being...refreshingly...true to her blood relative...not taking a chance on any misunderstanding...

Try to find another annoyance...let this one go...

Here is your answer OP, it is amazing you have to read 110 replies before finding a post with the obvious answear. And it also often aplies to GF friends of same sex.

  3. Lack of education...

Nothing to do with that.I am educated and havent got a clue where to dump rubbish. The government need to do something about it.

You got a point there, every time i leave my office i don’t know where to dump the waste. I walk to a tree nearby where there is a lot waiting for the Trash truck. When i buy a drink walking in whichever big shopping mall, it is very hard to find a bin to throw the waste. I got fined 2 years ago for throwing a cigaret bud on the street. I did actually walk with it half a kilometer to find a bin.

  4. education, or lack of it, I see people throwing rubbish out of car windows all the time, kids on scooters throwing icecoffee containers and bag onto side of road, ??????

it is lack of education, it is not a matter that thai society and media talk about.

When driving with my GF, she often throws the garbage that is in a plastic bag out of the window. I get angry and try to educate her to keep it till we come home and drop it in the bin.

Her response is always you stupid farlang, this is thailand and i do what i want.

If you have a back to back business meeting you would not legally be able to use an entry given at the airport as you must have a non-O visa for that.

I think you mean he needs a Non-immigrant B visa:

    From http://canberra.thaiembassy.org/

"Business visitors or people engaged in any business activities such as attending a meeting or a conference, working or conducting a business in Thailand must have a Non-immigrant B visa before entering Thailand. The non – immigrant B visa is categorized into 2 categories:

A single entry visa allows you to stay up to 90 days. The application must be supported by a letter from an employer in Australia or a business counterpart in Thailand, The fee is $90.00 AUD. (nonrefundable)
A multiple entries visa allows you to stay up to 90 days for each entry and valid for multiple entries to Thailand within one year, however the applicant must report himself/herself to the nearest immigration office or to the police station. The fee is $225.00 AUD (nonrefundable) "

That is true, and nobody does it. Have you seen the amount of paperwork needed to get a B Visa at the Embassy, It is ridiculous.

  6. There are lots of people who work online and choose Thailand as their base of operations. Now that immigration seems to be against people staying longer than a few months, is it even possible for a freelancer to live in Thailand now?

In Chiang Mai a couple of years ago they had an event at the hotel run by immigration where the commanding officer was asked about people who work online but their work has no connection to Thailand whatsoever, and his answer was it was fine to work online as long as you're not doing any sort of work that deals with Thailand.

So at this point what are the options for someone who has been living here for years already and has built a life here?

I'm going to go get another tourist visa in Cambodia and hopefully that will be alright for the short term. But after that what is there? ED visa?

Their intention is to stop people working illegally in Thailand in jobs such as tour guides and such where Thais could potentially have a job, but in this case it's individuals supporting themselves in a situation that only adds money to the Thai economy and does not take away any jobs at all.

Are they just going to start telling me 'no you can't come back' since I've been living here a long time already?

There are lots and lots of people just like me who aren't doing anything wrong and contribute to the Thai economy by living here. It doesn't sound like we're not welcome, but we're being painted with the same brush as others and it's going to affect a very large amount of people.

I don't see the problem. Start a company, pay tax and social security for you and 4 Thais and get a work permit and extension of stay based on employment. Then you contribute more than buying subsidized rice, eating subsidized food, fueling your car/motorbike with subsidized fuel and using subsidized electricity.

Yes I know that 80% of Thai people also don't pay much tax, but it is their country. Thailand expects foreigners to contribute at least 100,000 baht annually in order to be welcome. Be that via taxes or a PE elite visa they don't care.

I am quite in the same situation as the OP, had in 3 years a company, paid taxes and social security for 4 Thais, but didn’t pay them salary as i didn’t need them around the clock in office and i usually hired different skilled thai people on project basis.

A control visit from the social security forced me to close the company as i was not in office the day of control and no staff was there.

My Lawyer suggested me to open a new company with staff there in the opening hours, but i choose to wait and look at other options. I simply don’t need 4 full time people working for me. And they must work on the registered office premises, not a thing that is valuable for my business.

As far i understand it is the only legal way to have a business and work in thailand?

What if you have an expertise and are consulting?

  7. I'm surprised the Junta hasn't yet pulled the plug on the internet and GSM networks yet.

business has to continue working, you pull the plug on that an the Junta has even greater problems to restore the situation in the country.

Second even the junta wants to chat on social media, unhappy soldiers is not a good thing. Pull the plug might be today the thing that will make you the most unpopular . See what happened in turkey some month ago.

  8. "It's a good idea that Twitter has this policy to take care and prevent its users from violating the law, because freedom of expression must not violate other people's rights or the laws in each country,"

All people are equal, but some are more equal than others.

Props to Animal Farm, George Orwell.

mmm...What about laws voted while there was a Dictatorship.

  9. I live in BKK, and have never been to Pattaya, so please excuse me for not knowing my way around. Often, in this forum, stories like these open the flood gates of some broad criticisms of Thailand. I certainly think armed robbery is the most dangerous situation, since it only takes a second to move to "homicide." Kudos to the person for having sense to hand it over and walk away.

i will venture to guess that Soi 16/1 off the Naklua Road is not a temple or meditation center. I will guess, it is a red light area.

So, before the Thai bashers get into overdrive, here is some adult advice. In other words, not really a Thai issue.

No matter what country you are in, or what continent...flashing around a sum of money equivalent to three month's wages after last call in the red light district is just plain stupid. That girl on the back of the bike? Hmmmm....do you think she might have noticed that rather attractive bulge in his pocket...and yes...I do mean 16,000 Baht. (plus the parting gift of a watch, phone and ATM card) Oh, and let me get this straight, he has 16,000 baht and is w-a-l-k-i-n-g alone in the dark Pure genius!

Sorry dude, if you are looking for sympathy, forget it...you went to the tiger cage in a suit made out of prime rib.

Ask (for it) and ye shall receive. At least he lived to tell the tale, I have lived in American cities where they would have eliminated the witness.

Naklua 16/1 is not red light district area, and carrying large amounts of money happens from time to time. He might have to pay something as rent or whatever the next day and withdrew the money from a ATM. Most transactions are in cash in thailand. I wouldn't say the man was stupid, mostly unlucky.

I lived a year in Pattaya, and felt more safe there than any big city in Europe.

  10. It's not only the official information channels that failed to provide the needed information. I would blame the TV media too. They sensationalize, find the deepest water hole in an area, and dump a reporter in it. I have seen no maps with explanation of affected areas, extent of the flood in particular areas, progression in time etc…

Maybe it's just because I am farang and don't understand enough Thai, normally in situation like this you would also find an official information channel in English. Maybe there is, i don't know, Pattaya has local English TV media, what about BKK. Maybe we should ask mr. Colov to do a Bangkok People.

I don't know who runs thaivisa.com, if it's a big media player who's behind, i would expect them too to come with information and maps. Right now it is normal people, forum users, who finds out to make a google map with updated information on the flood situation.

  11. Understand your frustration and wanting to try to get info but one really shouldn't complain in your situation given the hardships so many are having to endear during this crisis .... really doesn't compare to your inconveniences while driving your car.

Anyway ... I'm pretty sure this is a link to live videos of most of the major roads but for some reason I cannot pull it up right now (never had this issue with not loading before) http://www.traffy.in...raffy/index.php

Thanks for the link, but talking of inconveniences, i can not see the point in not informing tourists and expats with such information, Last week i drove into a flooded area on the motorway with no sign of warning or diversion. This does not make any thing better to let people drive around in blindness when the info is available on some desk somewhere. Last week the US Embassy had a good list of closed roads.

  12. I have been living here only for 8 month now and must say that any information for tourist or expats has been non existent. Any country i know of would have some english information website or news channel about the situation, with maps showing closed roads and flooded areas in a situation like there is now and the past month. Any time i have to go to the center of bangkok, my gf screams and shows me the footages on TV and call me stupid. I ask her for information and get nothing other than Bangkok is flooded. Actually it seems that nobody in this country is well informed and asking questions and information is impolite.

  13. Is there a website showing which roads are open or closed for circulation ?

I am tired of guessing my way around, having to turn back on a motorway to Bangkok because it is over flooded and left open for traffic by the police with no warning (yes trucks would be able to pass). Info here on thaivisa referring to police stating exactly how many roads and motorways are closed, tells me they know well about it. So where is that website with the maps and the road info ? I have been looking for 4 weeks now for such.

  14. Why did you find 304 to be a problem in the first place. I came over it from the highway 24 junction south of Korat down to Jomtien this afternoon (Tuesday). Dry as a bone and surprisingly quick - not one long grinding queue and I was in Kabinburi within 90 minutes of leaving highway 24. The south bound passage seems to be quicker than the northbound passage if lorries were the issue. Try it at lunchtime - maybe all the heavy traffic had stopped to eat when I came through!

If it was the roads leading to 304 at Kabinburi that were the problem try going further south to say Chachongsaeo and come back into BKK on the Chonburi-BKK motorway.

A long way of saying: no I can't tell you a better route and my guess is that there isn't one while the roads in the Central Plains area unreliable for flooding and the Khao Yai route being an even longer way over the hills.

No I didn't find 304 to be a problem besides being stuck for 3 hours at the Hills between Kabinburi and Korat, because of an accident there. This was just bad luck.

I just asked to know if something might be better. It is impossible to get any information anywhere else and I haven't yet figured out if there is a website dedicated to the road and traffic situation in thailand.

I'll go again for the 304. Thanks.

  15. Had to drive from Bangkok to Korat yesterday. I guessed highway 1 would be closed and knew there was some flooding in saraburi. I chosed to drive a bit south on highway 7 to near Chachoengsao and then take route 304 all the way to Korat.

No water flood problems in that route, beside being stuck 2-3 hours in the mountain pass after Kabin Buri, with all those trucks trying to pass there.

What i regret is to be totally unable to get any info on which road is open and which is closed. with information like 595 damaged rural roads, 163 impassable some officials know how the road situation is. so where is the map? where is the link to the website with the info.

It is stupid to have no info on those matters, sending people on the road just to be stuck and make the situation even worth.

  16. Now i read in another thread that you can't get a work permit registering your company in a virtual office. the premisses must be large enough for the you and the 4 thai staff, legal authorities dept. come and inspect the premisses. On my previous workplace, we had to supply pictures of offices premisses.

All this makes me ask, can you at all start a business registering the company in a virtual office?

How come is a virtual office legal if it is supposed to have room enough for 5 people?

I'm sorry if i now ask this in 2 threads.
