  1. I suppose you can do border runs every 90 days, but it's a long way to any border in Brazil.

This is the requirement for a permanent retirement visa in Brazil.

    Retiree

A retired foreigner, over 50, who will transfer to Brazil the monthly equivalent of at least US$ 2,000. There is no limit to the number of dependents who may also receive permanent residence visas, but the main applicant must provide proof that they are genuine dependent relatives, as defined in Brazilian law - see Res. 4 of the CNI (National Immigration Council).

The main applicant must prove he has a pension of at least US$ 2,000 a month. This will entitle him to visas for himself and two dependents. The applicant must demonstrate an additional US$ 1,000/month for each additional dependent, over and above the two already mentioned, and must supply, amongst other things:

    * A statement from the foreign agency responsible for paying his retirement pension, informing the total monthly sum of the benefit;

    * A bank declaration authorizing monthly transfer of at least US$ 2,000.

  2. this change in baht to us dollar exchange rate is made up of two components...the baht strengthening...and the dollar weakening. If you want to know how much is due to strengthening of the baht then compare the baht to other currencies and see if it is strengthening there....if not then it pobably is due to the us dollar weakening.

P.S. There is a third possibility. The baht could be being artificially propped up. I haven't a clue as to whether this is happening or not but I think not.

    Chownah

I thought the same thing you posted. I seem to recall the strengthing of the baht around the same time as the Shin Corp sale. Anyone confirm?

  3. My wife and daughter want to see the sea - some people actually go to beach resorts for that you know, not just because they got a hard on watching Full Metal Jacket, or never had a life and try to make up for it in retirement by going to the only place th.......... STOP, don't get me started :D

As the above clearly suggests, 'Neeranam' appears to find it difficult to mask his deep-seated loathing for Pattaya and its expat residents.

He is not alone it would seem (causing some to invent experiences they have never had), although as to why he and his ilk feel so negatively passionate about a place they have next to no knowledge of, and people they have never met, is beyond my immediate comprehension. :D

I personally detest Bangkok, but never have I felt the need to slag off those who choose to live there and insinuate they are drawn to the place by the NEP, Soi Cowboy etc.

Some unwelcome skeletal remains in the memory cupboard perhaps, or is it simply because their circumstances are such that they can only dream of living in the place they ostensibly scorn...? :o

I agree Noel, however, a couple of the postings here have brought to light a potentially serious problem. If there is "sucky, sucky" and "handsome man" being bantered about downtown, DVK1951 and I will take it upon ourselves to investigate a 1km radius around The Montien in an attempt to identify the perpetrators. All members of PASSOUT are invited to participate as there is strength in numbers. We don't have to take "sucky, sucky" lying down!

Best of luck and well done for putting yourselves out in such a selfless way.

However, I think you may be hard pressed (no pun intended) to find a suitable venue anywhere in the immediate vicinity of the Montien:

PS. As you will doubtless want to re-enact the event as per the aggrieved poster's account, where will you get the kids to accompany you from...? :D

I thought about that too. I lived in the Hard Rock (when it was the Merlin) for 6 months and every day I would have to go a pretty good way to get "offended" (across Pattaya Klang to Soi 7 or 8).

And as far as kids to accompany us, DVK1951 is so old that anyone with him looks like a kid..so no problem there :D

  5. Why would you ask?

Aren't you the author of this little gem...

"I went to Pattaya last year and would never go back -it's a shithole, full of the dregs of Thai society and farang whoremongers"

We all have our bad days mate. :o I realise now that there surely must be nice parts to Pattaya, it's just that I haven't seen them yet. I'm thinking now of going to Jomtien.

I wouldn't go back to that area(soi8). It might have been soi 6 - we stayed at the Victoria Pub.

Soi 8 seems like an odd place to take the family for a walk. That's like me taking a family stroll thru the thermae only worse
We had to walk down it to get to the beach.

I was talking to an old friend who goes there for the yachting the other day - he loves it there, but I guess he's well out at sea.

I'm glad you now realize that there are nice parts to Pattaya since your posting of 2 weeks ago. I'm so glad, as a matter of fact, I'd like to recommend that you take your family to Bang Saen Beach. It will probably save you better than an hour traveling time since it's closer to where you are coming from. The beach is nice, there are hotels that range in price from reasonable up to outrageous , you can sit by the beach and enjoy seafood, jetski, ride banana boats etc. Then you can drive up the mountain and get a few bananas and feed them to the monkeys that will sit on your car. Good eating (farang or Thai, whatever you're looking for) and shopping not bad either.

Nice place to spend a few days.

  6. Is there any place in Pattaya that is good for young kids?

My wife and daughter are hassling me to go to the sea and we can't afford to go to Phuket or a proper beach resort.

I walked up soi 8, I think it was, a few years ago with my little daughter and a few girls came up and did the "oo na rak" thing to us. I still got the "handsome man" shouted at me a few times, which was surprising as I had a push chair. I wouldn't go back to that downtown area with her, being older.

Is there another area that I haven't seen away from all the nonsense?

    Why would you ask?

  7. I went for a walk with my two boys and decieded to get something to eat and a beer in a local bar.

    <snipped for brevity>

This was right next to where our conference was(Montien hotel).

I'm trying very hard to recall any local bars next to the Montien... :o

I was going to post the same thing and include the fact the Topps (with 2 excellent indoor restuarants, one off the parking lot and one in the store) is no more than 40 meters from the entrance to the Montien.

I didn't, however, in anticipation of replies like "Topps looked like a biker bar" or "The staff at Topps might have had a bad day" or "They were selling lottery tickets outside" etc.

  8. What I do not understand is why so many guys on this forum knock down anybody who writes a bad experience in Pattaya. However, not so long ago a guy wrote that his male friend had been raped in a soi and I don't remember any of you having anything to say about that. It was too "ooooouch"?? Bet you are all watching your backs(sides) when you go up your favourite sois.

Oh boy, this gets better! :D

Are you really so naïve and gullible that you believe everything you read courtesy of an anonymous poster?

    Keep 'em coming, Tammi...! :o

So, I presume you also don't believe a word I say about friend being drugged waking up naked and penniless, etc., about naked farang man on street early morning, about under table services offered to elderly farang woman?

Saraburioz is an advanced member of ThaiVisa with 52 posts. He is Australian, married to a Thai, has 3 children - 2 boys and 1 girl, ages about 7+, 5+, and 2+. He is about 33 years old and his wife is about 30. From his posts we learn that he is a family man concerned for the health and welfare of his children.

Will look forward to some informative posts from you and your 'bashing' friends.

Then why in the world would he take them into a bar in Pattaya when there are so many family oriented restuarants here?

  9. I hope the conference your wife attended was "Parenting 101"

Why would anyone take their children to a "bar" and then complain about the surroundings when they were only a 5 minute, 5 baht ride from KFC, Burger King, McDonalds, Sizzler etc.?

Please give the name and location of the bar so that the Pattaya Anti Sucky Sucky Observers United Together (PASSOUT) can investigate.

    Thank you for your cooperation.

  10. I'm hoping for a replay of the 1968 World Series, albeit with a different outcome.

    So far, so good. :o

Now am hoping for a different outcome than 1968, and especially 2004!

    Me too!

But congratulations to the Mets for a hard fought series. They are a good young team and will be in the hunt for years to come.

It will be interesting to see Leyland and LaRussa playing chess again.

  11. I have just spent two nights in Pattaya, i went there on business with 4 of my coleagues.

(thanks for the money you spent while here, and thanks to your mates too!)

What a hole that place is. How could anyone wish to live there?

(it's easy....it gets a whole lot nicer when all the whingers leave)

So my question is, what drives you to live and holiday in such a place?

(the same reason that drove you away...personal choice)

I for one would never return there. :o

    I'll drink to that!

  12. Good earnings having a bar in South Pattaya huh Dave?

If it generates money enough to throw away on something like this I think I'll have to have myself a bar too. Or perhaps spend my hard earned somewhere else.

Let us all know when you open your bar. There are many for sale and with a little luck, you can join Dave and me for dinner at Manhattens. :o

  13. There is no comparison between the number of peoplel who aplly to reside in Canada and other Westernised countries, and Thailand. The main differance is alot of the people who aply to stay in those countries have turned up at the border post, bag in hand with no-where else to go.

The reasons and motives are not comparable.

I dont think its a case of been stingy, the requirements for Thailand are simply a lot different - no-one turns up here to apply for refugee status, and if they do, they are usualy here under UN refugee status (as most are) and enroute to a European country or the USA.

    Tim

I quite admire Thais for keeping to a limit immigration, foriegn ownership of land/property etc, lets face it if it was easy Yank's in particular would simply "buy it up" I sincerely wish the UK adopted the same policy !

    Yeah, those rotten yanks.

I suppose all the limeys are spending all their money on soap and toothpaste. :o

  14. You are correct, there is the ANZ Royal Bank there, what it is tied into who knows. Now the real question is why would you invest in a Cambodia where the risks are extremly high when you can invest in a 1st. world country like New Zealand and get the same rate? I'd put my money in New Zealand or Australia (at a slightly lower rate) anytime.

Not for investment - I plan to spend some time in the country, using a business visa (which should make it quite easy to open an account) & thought it might be safer than keeping a stack of USD under the bed (when outside of Phnom Penh) !

I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I would be reluctant to invest in a country where your assets could be confiscated overnight "for the common good of the people".

    What recourse would you have?

  15. Well there chaisoot, I'm going with Mets-Tigers and Mets take series in 7 games

You're assuming, of course, that the Mutts are going to get past the Cards.

    I agree. :o

Now that my Yanks are out of the picture, I see it as Cards and A's for the series now.

I hate to throw statistics and logic into this, but I assume you know that the Mets had the best record in baseball against righthanded pitchers (and they sucked against lefthanders -- I believe they were 9-17 in the last 2 months of the season). Both the Mets and Cardinals announced their starting rotation for the 7 games and the Cardinals don't have a single lefthander among them. The pitching matchups strongly favor the Mets in Games 1, 2 and 4 while the Cardinals have the advantage in Game 3, using ace Chris Carpenter against Steve Trachsel. Both teams have said that in Games 5 and 6, if necessary, they'll use the same pitchers as in Games 1 and 2.

I see where you are coming from, but at this point of the season stats and logic go by the wayside.

For the last 3 years (prior to this one) I think the Cards had 100+ game regular game winning seasons (and/or the best record in baseball) and it didn't mean a thing in the postseason.

I agree that the Cards need a good lefty, but do you think the Mets having one in the lineup is an advantage against the best right handed hitter in baseball...Albert Pujols?
