  1. Please anyone chip in quickly if I am wrong here.

As I recall you could only get a 5 year licencse AFTER your first year license had expired and not before.

Not the case with mine... My 1-year expired on the January 24, but I applied for my 5-year on January 20 and got it. However, the issue date is January 25.

Everyone won't have the same experience. I'm not saying everyone can or will get theirs before the previous one expires. But now that we know it has happened, it can be one of the expected outcomes.

  2. The Wave is proven that it can carry anything, anywhere, indefinitely, so that is what I would go for, the standard 110cc will go, but 125cc will be better. They are all auto-clutch so no choice there.

Actually, you can get an automatic Wave 110, but I think the gears would better aid in riding over hills.

Have you bought anything yet? Why not rent these models and then choose, if renting is convenient?

  3. What if the last registered owner has already returned to the West, so #2 cannot be completely fulfilled? The seller can mail or email (signatures are never verified, just need to be from a blue ink pen) copies of all forms, but it would be impossible to get a residence certificate.

  4. I see corn for sale at many places, so maybe check markets or grocery stores. You may have to buy the corn, too. Or, maybe ask the people who sell roasted corn on the street if you can have their old husks.

  5. Yeah, I think it depends on who you are with. I went to Fabrique and wasn't charged, presumably because I was a lone foreigner with a bunch of Thai friends. Actually, I've never been charged to any bar or club. I've never been to Infinity. I'll have to check it out sometime.

  6. OP How much weight are you wanting?

A housemate has recently started going to City Gym, but he's in the Philippines until December, so I can't tell you location/price. However, I can say that he said it's "legit" and has plenty of weight. We both use over 250lbs on a barbell.

I've been going to 700 Year Stadium out of convenience- I knew where it was, unlike City Gym until recently. 700 costs 30 for nonmembers and 15 for members per visit. If you're asking about 250lbs+, then I would say 700 lacks... a lot.

Sadly, both of these gyms are too far to walk from the market. A red truck could take you to 700, but it won't be cheap. City Gym would be too difficult to explain, but I think it's actually closer to the market. Maybe find a cheap drop-off in between? It would be the best no-frills, I-just-wanna-lift joint.

Powerhouse is ridiculously expensive. It costs more here than my membership did in the States, same chain. I'd work out there if I could get the discount a Thai friend has, which a worker at Powerhouse said doesn't exist (no discounts for anybody).

  7. That's because beetlejuice is an old fart :P

Check out Chiang Mai Ultimate on Facebook. That's ultimate as in ultimate frisbee. It's people your (our) age. You don't even have to know how to play. It's just a fun, social atmosphere. But I do say give the game a try!

Check the Facebook page for information on when/where we play. It's almost always going to be every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 4:30/5 at CMU. More details on the page!

  8. Despite what a lot of negative commenters will say, you can find decent, clean housing in your price range. I stayed in a studio at Huay Kaew Residence for 4000/month with a 6+ month contract and I didn't look very long. It has a very good location, not loud, decently clean, and there is a website.

Your best bet is to diligently look at apartments yourself, don't trust photos and descriptions in advertisements. When you're scouting, ask to see several rooms in different areas. Take into consideration if it gets morning or afternoon sun, if it faces the street/parking lot, what kind of neighbors it has. Ask any tenants you see about their opinion of the place, the high and low points, especially farang.

    Here are some important questions:

What area of the city do you want to live in?

Along that line, what will you be doing here for work, fun, etc?

Will you have your own transportation, i.e. car, scooter, other, or will you be relying on others?

If you can answer these questions, it will help a great deal. If you still can't figure anything out, pm me. I'll assist if I can.

  9. I want to go to Khon Kaen in a couple weeks. I need to be there on Jan 25-26, so I thought about leaving Thursday afternoon and coming back sometime on Sunday.

Any tips on how to get there? Flying round-trip from Chiang Mai to Khon Kaen is undesireable. I'm looking at around 9k baht for tickets, whereas flying round-trip to Udon Thani is only 4300 baht. This seems the best bet, but I'm kind of lost on what to do from there. I would like to take a bus, Nakhon Chai Air if possible. I can't find any information for that route on their website, so I will probably call tomorrow.

Other travel constraints: I will get off of work on Thursday around 4 or 5 and need to be back on Monday morning.

Any good tips, advice, experience to share would be greatly appreciated. Flaming, distractions, and heckling will kindly receive an eye-rolling and possibly a chuckle.

    Thanks,

    Derek

  10. Who knows Derek, just wait until you get here and shop around, your almost asking how long is a piece of string

I am here, and I have shopped around. I'm not asking an impossible question. Simply: "Are 2012 models discounted when 2013 models come out?" I thought maybe some consumers of new bikes might notice if such a trend exists. Sumet Cycle would be the most qualified to answer since he sales bikes.

So, Sumet Cycle (sorry, forgot your name off the top of my head), do dealers discount last year's models when this year's come out?

  11. I want to buy a new Wave 125. When are the new models introduced and what effect does it have on the old model's price, if any? For examples, in the States, when a new year model car is introduced, last year's model is discounted. Does anything like that happen here with scooters?

When do the 2013 models come out? Should I buy a 2012 now? Wait until the 2013 comes out? Then I would buy a 2013 if the prices are the same or a 2012 if it is discounted.

  12. I have a couple friends that tutor farangs. One has a lot of experience, he speaks perfect English with an American accent, and has a great reputation. He charges 300/hr, I believe. I'm not sure if he uses a book or what. I just have some friends that have used him and say he is great.

The other is cheaper, 200/hr, but doesn't have as much experience. He helps me with basic conversation, explaining 'why,' etc. when we hang out. He would be good for conversational Thai.

PM me if you're interested and I can pass it on.

For me, I want a structured classroom setting. My problem is I work during the day and there is no class offered when I'm free. Anybody know of Thai classes offered after 5?

  13. I had to kick-start it this morning. On the way home tonight it died and won't even kick start.

A friend with a 2010 Mio 115 had exactly the same problems.

From one day to another, he couldn't start the bike.

Either electric nor kickstart. Not even the control lamps were shining.

    Battery was good

He told me, the workshop removed the right fairing under the seat und there was a brown/(red?) single-core cable, which was somehow interrupted or "bad connected".

I assume, it is a cable from the ignition-switch to a main relais or fuse...

However, the shop cleaned the connector(s) and contacts and after that, the bike started without further problems.

It was the ignition. Had it replaced the next morning.

I'll keep the WD-40 in mind for the rainy season.

  14. OK, now I am confused. If you now want to issue a BKK-DFW-BKK ticket that is a lot different than changing your return date.

Assuming it's feasible for you, it might be easiest, cheapest to take the flight back on Oct. 29, then turn around on a new ticket, from KE?

Sent from my Desire HD using Thaivisa Connect App

I was going to buy a separate ticket DFW>BKK, actually CNX. If it was near the same price as or less than buying another 2-way. Looks like it's not.

Sadly, that's not feasible. I'll be working then.

I don't mind losing the return ticket if I have to. It was a risk I was willing to take. A 2-way was cheaper than two 1-ways.

  15. 29 October, BKK>Narita>San Francisco>Dallas. $9XX fare + $5XX fees = $15XX total. I bought the ticket in July, 2012. I would like to go to the States right after Songkran and come back early May, approximately 21 April - 11 May.

t seems my best bet is to cancel the flight and either take the partial refund as credit to a new flight or put it back on the credit card and book with someone else. Korean Air has good deals during that time and seems to be a more pleasant airline.
