  1. Army in Trang launches plastic bag-zero campaign

TRANG, 18 October 2015 (NNT) - The 4th Infantry Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment has launched a Styrofoam-zero campaign to encourage its members to reduce use of Styrofoam containers and plastic bags.

The commander said the campaign was aimed at promoting the government’s environmental policy.

The 4th Infantry Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment has given cloth bags to officials and their families to encourage them to use the bags instead of plastic ones when they go shopping.

The move is expected to raise awareness of the importance of environmental conservation among Infantry officials and communities around the camp.

A survey by the Pollution Control Department showed that the country threw away around 7,000 tons of plastic bags and Styrofoam trash per day, or 2.7 million tons per year. A plastic bag takes as long as 450 years to decompose.

  3. Phuket Opinion: History of mob rule repeats itself

    post-137452-0-84848000-1445149012_thumb.

PHUKET: The Royal Thai Police must conduct a full and transparent investigation into the sad chain of events that led up to the riot at Thalang Police Station – all instigators must face justice.

Issues of democratic development aside, one of the silver linings of living under de facto martial law for almost a year-and-a-half has been the dramatic reduction in the number of tourism-killing road blockades set up by protesters.

Prior to the seizure of power by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) in 2014, hardly a month passed without a roadblock of some kind. The island seemed to be dangerously close to slipping into a ‘protestocracy’ which was fostered by widespread self-entitlement, greed, corruption – and residents not trusting police.

In late April 2014, irate residents of Tah Chat Chai staged a crippling roadblock on Thepkrasattri Road, accusing police of violent interrogation methods when the officers questioned young suspects in the brutal rape of a pregnant 25-year-old woman.

The road closure caused hundreds of would-be passengers to miss flights and ended, as usual, when the officers were transferred out of the district.

  4. Man saves 2 Norwegian bird watchers sinking in Thailand mud

BANGKOK (AP) — A construction worker on a fishing trip dramatically rescued two Norwegian bird watchers who were sinking into a mudflat in southern Thailand, lying down in the mud to allow the pair to use his body to pry themselves to safety.

The incident Friday morning in Krabi province was caught on camera by an amateur photographer from Bangkok, who posted the video on his Facebook page. The posting got at least 1.6 million views, with many showering the rescuer with praise.

The Norwegian pair, whose names were not released, had taken their cameras to a river estuary at first light Friday, but the mudflats proved to be far less firm than they had thought. Very quickly, they found themselves sinking.

A local construction worker, identified by Thai media as Chat Ubonchinda, was heading home from his fishing trip by boat when he spotted them.

First, he tried to pull the two out, but the mud was too thick.

After taking their belongings to firmer ground, Chat lay down in the mud and let the two lift themselves up by pulling against his body. One of them even crawled across his back on the way to safety.

"All Thais are proud of what you did, it's great and no more words need to be explained," Somchai Ouansakul wrote in a Facebook comment. "I wish all Thais would have such a big heart like this."

  5. Man Rescues Birdwatchers Stuck In Mud

A Thai fisherman has rescued two Norwegian birdwatchers from waist-deep mud by lying down and allowing the tourists to climb over his body.

The rescue was caught on camera by an amateur photographer, who posted the video on his Facebook page.

It has since been viewed millions of times.

The tourists had taken their cameras to mudflats in southern Thailand, but quickly got into trouble.

The pair found themselves in waist-deep mud and unable to move.

A construction worker, who was returning from a fishing trip, spotted the Norwegians and went to help.

After initially trying to pull the pair out of the mud, he then took their camera equipment to safety before embarking on another plan.

    JACK BEZANTS, Associated Press

LONDON (AP) — Chelsea and Manchester United bounced back from disappointing losses with impressive wins in the Premier League on Saturday.

Diego Costa, returning from a three-match suspension for violent conduct, put the Premier League champions ahead against Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge, before defender Alan Hutton scored an own goal in Chelsea's 2-0 win.

  7. European Football Round Up: Neymar scores 4 times in Spain; Bayern remains perfect

MADRID (AP) — Neymar helped Barcelona fans forget the absence of the injured Lionel Messi on Saturday by scoring four goals in the Spanish league, while Cristiano Ronaldo settled for one as Real Madrid went provisionally top of the standings.

The top teams in the Premier League all won, while Bayern Munich became the first team to start the Bundesliga with nine straight victories.

  8. Neymar scores 4 times in Spain; Bayern remains perfect

Here's a look at the top European leagues on Saturday:
    ___

    SPAIN

Neymar thrived to help Barcelona recover from an early deficit at the Camp Nou. He converted two first-half penalty kicks and added two other goals in the second half before setting up Luis Suarez's score in a 5-2 win over Rayo Vallecano.

Earlier Saturday, Ronaldo set up a goal and scored another in a three-minute span to lead Real Madrid to a 3-0 win over Levante.

The results left the Spanish powerhouses provisionally atop the league standings with 18 points from eight matches, with Madrid ahead on goal difference. Villarreal is two points behind but can regain the lead when it hosts fourth-place Celta on Sunday.

"I'm very happy because of the victory and because of the way we played," the 23-year-old Neymar said. "It's never easy to play against a quality team like Rayo. We did our job and it was a great victory."
    ___

    ENGLAND

Chelsea and Manchester United bounced back from disappointing losses with impressive wins in the Premier League on Saturday.

Diego Costa, returning from a three-match suspension for violent conduct, put the defending champions ahead against Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge, before defender Alan Hutton scored an own goal in Chelsea's 2-0 win.

The victory helped ease pressure on Jose Mourinho after his side's faltering start to the season, including a 3-1 loss at home to Southampton in the last round.

United won 3-0 against Everton at Goodison Park, with Morgan Schneiderlin, Ander Herrera and Wayne Rooney scoring in an emphatic response to the 3-0 defeat against Arsenal two weeks ago.

Manchester City stayed in first place after Raheem Sterling scored a hat trick in a 5-1 win over Bournemouth, while Arsenal is two points back in second after a 3-0 win at Watford.

New Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp had to settle for a 0-0 draw at Tottenham in his first game in charge.
    ___

    FRANCE

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice as Paris Saint-Germain won 2-0 at Bastia to keep its confidence high ahead of its Champions League meeting with Real Madrid.

PSG didn't have a shot on target in the first half but Ibrahimovic, who had an earlier goal rightly disallowed for offside, struck in the 72nd and 83rd minutes.

"It's a good result, we won a tricky match," Ibrahimovic said. "Wednesday's match against Real will be completely different, we will be playing at home against one of the best teams in the world, it will be nice to play. Now we can focus on that, and we are ready."

Saturday's win kept PSG five points ahead of Angers after the newly promoted side came from behind to win 2-1 at Toulouse.

Caen was also on 21 points after beating Reims 1-0.
    ___

    GERMANY

Thomas Mueller's first-half strike gave Bayern Munich a 1-0 win at Werder Bremen on Saturday as the German champion became the first team to start the Bundesliga with nine consecutive victories.

Mueller scored his ninth of the season in the 24th minute when he ran past the static Bremen defense for Thiago Alcantara's clever ball, then eluded the goalkeeper with his first touch and slotted inside the post with his next.

The victory, Bayern Munich's 999th in the Bundesliga, restored the team's seven-point lead over Borussia Dortmund, which beat Mainz 2-0 Friday.
    ___

    ITALY

Daniele De Rossi marked his 500th game for Roma with a goal as he helped the capital side beat Empoli 3-1 on Saturday, while AC Milan's struggles continued with a 1-1 draw at Torino.

Two set pieces in three second-half minutes undid Empoli as Miralem Pjanic scored with a free kick before sending in a corner for De Rossi to double Roma's lead.

Mohamed Salah sealed the result 10 minutes later. Marcel Buchel netted a consolation for Empoli with his first goal for the club.

"It was undeniably a great night," De Rossi said. "When you win it's always a perfect one and then, if I score, which I don't do very often, I am even happier."

Roma, which has now scored 12 goals in its last three league matches, moved provisionally second ahead of Sunday's Derby d'Italia between Inter Milan and Juventus.

  9. Chelsea, Manchester United back to form in Premier League

The victory was welcomed by Jose Mourinho, who is under pressure due to his side's faltering start to the season. Chelsea lost its last match 3-1 at home to Southampton and Mourinho feels his team still has work to do to return to top form.

"Confidence comes with results, and results bring all the good quality that the players have to the fore," Mourinho said. "At the moment, some of my players have lost confidence but this was a great team performance."

United won 3-0 against Everton at Goodison Park, with Morgan Schneiderlin, Ander Herrera and Wayne Rooney scoring in an emphatic response to the 3-0 defeat against Arsenal two weeks ago.

"The defeat against Arsenal, two weeks and I cannot approach them (during the international break), then this performance? Fantastic," United manager Louis van Gaal said.

United is third on 19 points, two behind Manchester City, which routed Bournemouth 5-1. Raheem Sterling scored a hat trick in the first half and Wilfried Bony netted twice, meaning injured striker Sergio Aguero was not missed.

The two Manchester clubs play each other at Old Trafford next weekend.

"I think it was important for Raheem to score three goals," City manager Manuel Pellegrini said. "He must improve his finishing - he did that today. I don't think he's a striker like Kun (Aguero) or Bony but this year, and I said it when he arrived, I am sure he will score more goals."

Earlier Saturday, Juergen Klopp's first Liverpool match ended 0-0 against Tottenham.

Klopp was without striker Daniel Sturridge, who picked up a knock in training on Friday, so gave a first Premier League start to Divock Origi, who hit the post with a header after 10 minutes.

It was the closest Liverpool came to scoring, while Tottenham's Clinton N'Jie was later denied by a brilliant one-handed save from Simon Mignolet.

"We had our moments. From a very good corner we hit the post and there were some other situations where we could have been a little bit better, but for today it's ok," Klopp said, while also explaining that Sturridge could return for Liverpool's game against Rubin Kazan in the Europa League on Thursday.

"We made a diagnosis and screened him to be sure — we can see a little bit of swelling but nothing really serious. So we have to see. I hope he's ready to play on Thursday," Klopp said.

In the late game on Saturday, Arsenal netted three times in 12 second-half minutes to win 3-0 against Watford at Vicarage Road.

Alexis Sanchez begun the scoring in the 62nd after Mesut Ozil was tackled in the penalty area, only for the ball to roll free.

Giroud then lashed in Ozil's cut-back six minutes later before Aaron Ramsey netted his first club goal of the season, receiving a pass from Hector Bellerin before his effort was deflected by Ikechi Anya.

The result means Arsenal stayed second, above United on goal difference.

Elsewhere, Southampton surrendered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at home to Leicester, Sunderland lost 1-0 at West Brom in Sam Allardyce's first game in charge of the Black Cats and Crystal Palace was beaten 3-1 by West Ham.

  10. Slow-moving Typhoon Koppu slams into northern Philippines

  11. Former Everton manager Howard Kendall dies at age 69

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Howard Kendall, who led Everton to two league championships and a European title in the mid-1980s in the first of three coaching spells with the English club, has died. He was 69.

Everton said Kendall died in hospital in Southport, northwestern England, on Saturday. The club did not give a cause of death.

Kendall first took charge of Everton from 1981-87, winning the English league title and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1985, and the league again in 1987. It was the most successful period in the club's history.

He also managed Everton from 1990-93 and for the 1997-98 season, having previously spent seven years of his playing career at the club.

"It is with great sadness that Everton Football Club has learned of the passing of Howard Kendall," an Everton club statement said. "The most successful manager in the history of the club and one of the greatest players to pull on the Everton jersey."

As well as managing Everton, Kendall also took control of Blackburn, Spanish side Athletic Bilbao, Manchester City, Notts County, Sheffield United and Greek sides Xanthi and Ethnikos Piraeus.

But it was at Everton — specifically during his first tenure as manager — where he achieved the most success, often battling against fierce local rival Liverpool for silverware.

Everton won the 1985 league title by finishing 13 points ahead of Liverpool. Kendall's side also won the European Cup Winners' Cup that season and reached the FA Cup final, where it lost to Manchester United.

Liverpool beat Everton 3-1 in the 1986 FA Cup final and also regained the league title, before Everton won it back the following season.

Kendall's teams in that era included footballers such as Peter Reid, Trevor Steven, Andy Gray and Gary Lineker — some of the best players to represent Everton.

"It was a privilege to play for Howard Kendall's Everton," Lineker wrote on Twitter on Saturday. "Condolences to all his family."

The league title in 1987 was the final act of Kendall's first reign as Everton manager, as he departed for Bilbao soon after.

As a player, Kendall was considered one of the best never to play for England.

Together with Alan Ball and Colin Harvey at Everton, he formed a three-man midfield partnership which was nicknamed 'the holy trinity' for its contribution to winning the league title in 1970.

He was signed for Everton from Preston North End in 1967 and also played for Birmingham, Stoke and Blackburn, before returning to Goodison Park in 1981.

  12. Palestinians shot dead as Israelis thwart knife attacks

    606x341_315384.jpg

Israelis thwarted a number of attempted stabbings by Palestinians on Saturday in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

In the first attack in a Jewish settlement in the West Bank city of Hebron, an armed Israeli civilian shot dead a Palestinian who had tried to stab him, Israel’s army says.

Also near the West Bank city, a female border police officer shot dead a Palestinian woman who had stabbed her in the hand.

And in East Jerusalem police say a Palestinian was shot dead after trying to stab officers during an identity check.

There has been no let-up in violence since the start of the month with at least 39 Palestinians and seven Israelis killed.

Friday’s emergency session of the United Nations Security Council has changed nothing.

srael’s Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, blamed the upsurge in attacks on ‘How to Stab A Jew’ posters he said were being distributed to Palestinian children.

But the unrest escalated amid rumours suggesting that Israel was planning changes to Jerusalem’s al- Aqsa holy compound – a site of great importance to both Muslims and Jews.

With this in mind, the Palestinian envoy to the UN, Rizadh Mansour, urged intervention to end what he called “this aggression against our defenceless Palestinian people and against our shrines”.

Israel says it is keeping the status quo at the site.

The United States has stepped up efforts to try to restore calm to the region.

Secretary of State John Kerry spoke by telephone with both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to discuss ways to end the violence.

Kerry and Netanyahu will meet next week in Germany.

    606x341_315387.jpg

In a key battle for Iraqi forces against ISIL militants, there is still a long way to go.

Iraqi soldiers backed by Shi’ite militia fighters have recaptured most of the strategically important Baiji oil refinery, say security officials.

The country’s largest, some 200 kilometres north of Baghdad, it has changed hands several times since the Sunni Islamist fighters swept through northern Iraq last year.

Fully retaking the city of Baiji is now crucial.

Reports suggest that government forces may already control up to 60 percent but they are facing ISIL snipers, suicide bombers and roadside explosives.

Yet backed by US-led air strikes, they are persevering because the main route through Baiji will be key to sending troops and supplies in any attempt to retake Mosul, Iraq’s second city and the biggest prize in the war against the jihadists.

The group calling itself Islamic State now controls one-third of the territory of Iraq but its fighters suffered a major defeat in April when Iraqi troops and Shi’ite paramilitaries routed them from the city of Tikrit.

The insurgents struck back with gains in Baiji and the western province of Anbar, the other major battleground in the campaign against Islamic State.

So far US-led air strikes on the militants have failed to turn the tide in Iraq’s conflict, which has sapped the oil producing country’s finances and fuelled sectarian bloodletting.

And as the fighting rages on, civilians continue to suffer.

  16. Balkan borders continue to close as Hungary says will seal frontier with Slovenia

    606x341_315388.jpg

Hungary will close its border with Slovenia after barring its three major crossing points on its Croatian border, ending the possibility for refugees to use these transit routes westwards further into the EU.

Those who made it into Croatia before the barbed wire snapped shut are boarding trains bound for Slovenia. Hungary is making sure some do not slip back in.

“Temporarily, in all aspects compatible with the Schengen regulations, Hungary has restored border controls on the Hungarian-Slovenian border. This measure was needed due to this morning’s events, as migrants directed from Croatia to Slovenia appeared close to the Redics border crossing point, on the other side,” said government spokesman Zoltan Kovács.

In total Slovenia is expecting some 2,400 migrants, mostly from Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan. It says it only has capacity for 8000 in total, but has promised to keep its borders open as long as Austria does the same.

Slovenia is on the so-called “new route” from Turkey following the closure of other Balkan entry points. A group of some 1,500 refugees made it into Hungary just in time before the wire went up. Where they go from Zakany remains to be seen.
