  1. That one word says it all, of course it is illegal. If the person carrying out the work is in Thailand, it requires a work permit.

    A bit categorical.

This place in ChiangMai, for example, has scores of people coming to work there, every day.

    http://www.punspace.com/

I doubt any of them have work permits.

The police have heard about it and looked into it, by the way, and elected to leave the situation alone.

I imagine if they found you running what looked like a business, with a team of people doing customer service for example, as is common in the Philippines, then their would be consequences.

The solo internet warrior is left alone.

Re taxes, as pointed out by others, Thailand does not tax foreign source income unless remitted to Thailand the same year.

Interestingly, although I have found no CPA or legal opinions about it, expat experience around the world seems to confirm that use of an ATM card to obtain cash does NOT constitute receiving income in-country. It apparently it is either deemed trivial, or viewed like a debit-card purchase. In other words, having the Thai bank account (which for me at least would be a major reason to GET an O Visa or whatever, should I become eligible), and then being so bold as to wire in fresh earnings, regularly from outside, would indeed trigger local tax liability.

And technically, perhaps, it might also trigger the need for a work permit. But it's still hard to imagine enforcement of the WP issue if there is no tax issue (you dont owe, or you owe and are paying), because the WP laws are intended everywhere to protect local workers. Online work is seen as innocuous.

The OP should feel free to work online in Thailand, provided he does not wire in fresh earnings.

That looks a pretty cool place, but surely working on your own laptop would be the better option!

  2. Yes you could fly back to get continuing METV's but don't be surprised or annoyed when you have to prove work in your own country, some consulates and embassy conditions appear to be asking for it, or prove you're not working in Thailand

Or just get a single entry tourist visa from your own country and have a trip every 2 or 3 months for a week in a neigbouring Southeastern Asian country. Then come back into Thailand on new single entry tourist visa or a 30 day visa exempt, repeat cycle until you are bored and go home for the summer! No need to prove finances as you are touring around the region.

  3. Not sure where I read that bit of information. I read loads of articles of the web yesterday, I'll let my friend know that he can't work on a ED visa, he thinks he can.

While.you are telling your friend ask about his Work Permit application !

Without a WP he would be working illegally as well as violating the terms and conditions of his visa.

He already is, naughty boy on a tourist visa working in a school. I've told him about the crackdown on tourist visas to come next month and it's aimed at people like him!

  4. This information is interesting, I work online, I don't have my own company, but I write freelance web content. I have worked in Thailand before, but the choices of jobs are quite limited, teaching or telesales, done both, don't like either.

At the moment I'm building up my online work with the intention of spending 6 months or more travelling around other countries in Southeast Asia, but having a 6 month lease of a condo in BKK as my base. With the up coming tourist visa changes, it would seem the best solution for staying in the region for longer and earning money.

A grey area is fine with me, I can't get a Non O, under 50 and I'm divorced from a Thai wife. I did read that you can work on a ED visa if it's part time work under 20 hours, so remote working would fit aswell.

What ever you did read is factually wrong, working is prohibited on an ed visa

This college in BKK, I thought you couldn't work on a ED, but this college says you can? Not for me, I hate teaching, rather use a laptop. http://www.thongsookinternational.com/ba-tesol.html

  6. Bangnamphung floating market, Kwan Riam floating market, Wat Lad Phrao, Suan Luang Rama 9 park and I'll be writing about Talad Rod Fai, plus a piece about On Nut night market in the next week or two!

Good man, send it to me in a PM.

FYI, how about heading up to Wat Talat Nam on Ramkhamhaeng.

For our sak yant types, there is a Wat on soi Nawamin that does them for 200 baht..

Talat Roi Fai, are you talking about the back of Seacon Square?

If so there is a very nice beer garden area, serves Paulaner as well.

Sat and Sundays are the best days.

Yeah, that's the one, behind Seacon, nightmare to get to from Suk soi 77 in a taxi on a Friday evening! I went there twice, had a modified car show in front of Seacon with some hot models and a DJ blasting out some tunes.

The next time I'm in BKK I'll need some new temples and markets to check out. I'm in the UK now, actually writing about the weather in Bridgetown, Barbados for a freelance contract, digital nomading in Essex 555

  7. I upload and share on my website so everyone can experience a different side of Bangkok!

Good man, maybe we can come to some sort of arrangement, eg royalties or commission.

I can't mention the name of my site on here ermm.gif, but I have written about Bangnamphung floating market, Kwan Riam floating market, Wat Lad Phrao, Suan Luang Rama 9 park and I'll be writing about Talad Rod Fai, plus a piece about On Nut night market in the next week or two!

  8. Actually, this thread has been an eye opener, I now understand why people and posters tell us its perfectly ok to live in Bkk for 10,000 baht per month.

Misery, LOL, you are having a laff, I aint the one eating guay tiaw for 30 baht, you will usally find me at Tony Romas, eating on the inside, the others will be stood outside the window licking their chops in anticipation, before heading for some kao man gai at 30 baht a pop.

Another poster mentioned soi 17, I know it well.

The Thais asked me if I had an old shirt I could give the frarang tramp that was wandering around all day with no top.

Learn some Thai, and listen to the comments.

What's wrong with kuay teow or khao men gai for 30 baht, the Thai's are happy to eat it. At the end of the day, it's food to fill a whole, rather spend more on a decent beer or cocktail 555

  9. 110 baht for a large bottle of Leo is hardly expensive and the long island iced tea at The Cocktail Bar was only 160 baht, the other bar next to the clothes section of the market is 100 for a large bottle of Leo. Khao pad gai kai dao, 50 baht, I would call that pretty cheap.

What's wrong with being digital nomad? Money to be made being online thesedays!

Ohhh, the rats, yes lot's of big furry rats running amok after the bars/restaurants closed. There was a few occasions this year I was still sitting there with friends drinking until 3am with the horrible rats running around!

  10. It's not a mall, On Nut market is 4 bars with live bands and music, about 30+ food stalls and a clothes market. I spent 3 months in On Nut this year and the night market was my favourite place to go in the evening, good atmosphere, cheap beer, cheap aroi food and good mix of local ex-pats, tourists and thai's. Real shame that it's closing, I was looking forward to staying in On Nut later this year and visiting the market.

  11. Just woken up from my lovely sleep and wow, you guys are great, thanks for 300+ page views on my website! smile.png

Internet marketing is great, if you like what you have read on the website please feel free to leave a comment...

Sorry have to go as I need to write 1500 words this morning.

I just checked your site, having realised at this post that this was a little game you were playing. I'll let others tell you what to go to do to yourself. In the meantime, let me give you one piece of feedback on the site itself...

You need to learn how to use a camera and how to post-process. The banner photo on your 'about me' page is noticeably slanted -- amateurish. And most of the photos I looked at had severe motion blur. You either need to learn how to hold a camera or get a camera that has anti-shake. Some of those photos (one of you among some plants) are downright nasty in terms of quality. If that's what you're doing now, you probably should go for that burger flipping job.

Thanks for your feedback about the photos, I know some are not perfect. The photos have been used from my collection, I only got a decent Nikon camera in November last year. The blog is a mish mash of camera phone photos from all of my previous visits to Asia and in the UK. I've just had to make do with the content until my next visit to Asia.

  12. I think this is OP's twisted way to pump up the hit rate for his site.

Well you have succeded and I can only say that I am sorry that I fell for it as well.

I did say that the internet is full of crap and this thread proves that!

You never know what is true or false on the internet, I'll leave it to your imagination...

No, only proves you're full of crap. The few extra page views your blog received can't redeem it. It's poorly designed and written. Here's one of your laughable pearls captured in a run-on sentence:

"The journey from Bangkok took 8 hours to reach Udon Thani and then a further 3 hours to reach the village, the journey back was the same."

It's not going to make you any money and it doesn't demonstrate marketable skills, being so amateurish.

If your wife really did leave you, as she probably did, then I'd say she was about the best thing you had going. Seems unlikely she'll ever come back, but I think she deserves to remain in the UK until her visa runs out anyway. Hopefully she can find a real man by then. And you should wish her well. If she hasn't left you, then we're merely left wondering why not. smile.png

There was a thread similar to yours some years ago regarding employment in the UK for the unskilled, superannuated such as yourself, with the internet aspect. You might see if the advice there is still sound:

Can Anybody Teach Me How To Start A Small Internet Concern

And I think you should be banned from the forum at this point.

You didn't have to read it did you, who is the fool, you or me?
