  1. I went to BigC Extra today and they had everything I wanted except sugar and tinned milk. Those two products I can buy elsewhere. Prices did seem reasonable too considering.

The local street store nearby has a full stock of sacks of rice again today. The egg lady has plenty of eggs. The rice is still well priced and the eggs have gone up 15 Baht for 10.

I understand Makro is well stocked too but I dislike going in the car.

Local shop selling sugar at old price too so I bought a bag.

My cupboard is far from bare and only at a slightly increased cost.

I did look at the local markets where I would usually buy veg. But when I heard their prices I declined to buy.

Maybe many suppliers are now getting their act together.

  2. 5 years with the same machine. No external filter. No problems either. I do clean out the internal filter occasionally. I also set the machine to 'clean tub' maybe twice a year or after some particularly dirty water has come through the system. I do not use water softener. If there is hard water in the area does that not usually turn to limescale when heated, as in boiling the kettle regularly?

  3. No offense, but I seriously doubt there is anyone here who is so financially kaput that they would let their wife do a menial job for 6-8 hours a day with only a couple of days off a month for 6-8000 baht a month. If so I fail to see the logic in losing what time you have left together just for a few extra baht in the pot when we should all see a sub 10k a month salary as a mere blip on the total family income. I for one certainly wouldn't subject my wife to such hardship for practically zero reward.

I give my wife 50,000 a month, out of which she has some obligations such as weekday food etc for the family, but the rest she can keep. As long as my dinner is on the table and I have a steady supply of toothpaste, deodorant and toilet paper she can do what she wants with the rest. I love her and she's worth it. I personally can't fathom why anyone who can afford to live in Thailand on retirement, or working etc cant afford to keep their spouse out of a backbreaking menial low paid job unless they had either seriously mismanaged their own finances or were just incredibly selfish.

A lot of people would prefer to work full time for 6-8000K rather than being a luxury-escort-pretending-to-be-a-loving-wife for 50K, it's just a matter of preference, why judging?

The lady I am with wants to work. She sees no point in sitting at home all day long. At work she meets plenty of people, has friends there and does something useful. It is also very good for her self esteem and nothing to do with keeping her out of a menial backbreaking job. Nothing to do with my personal finances either. In fact she is happy.

There are some fools [in my opinion and the opinion of friends of mine] around who happily pay a woman large sums of money but that is up to them. Some of those men love to brag about how much they give a woman each month.

Quite a few people I know give their women nothing at all financially. These women have a roof over their heads, food on the table, nights out, t.v and other basics and it costs them nothing. If they were not happy they would leave the man they are with yet they choose to stay. In at least one case they have been together 10 years now.

On the other hand I know one friend who gives his woman over 20,000 a month and she still goes to work 6 days a week. Many people find work a way of life that gives them some purpose. They are not kept women. Not paid girlfriends. These women have some self esteem and would not sell themselves.

That is not what the topic is about though. The topic is about wages and hours for which people including myself have given answers to the best of our knowledge..

  4. Or maybe the delivery could not get there on time because of traffic and flooded roadways. I heard there is flooding in Thailand. Did you hear about it too?

Never mind the people who are hungry and tired and sick, wait for the Boss to get his photo shoot handing out the goodies. Seems to me the rice was there and no Boss with his photographer.

  5. If there is no problem as some suggest why did I have to go hunting for ciggies this morning as the local 7-11 had none of my brand? They have had no tinned milk for weeks or sugar, cakes, peanuts, water and a lot of other products.

Eggs seem plentiful now, thankfully :)

It is no great hardship to hunt about as it gets me out and about a bit more it is simply a bit more hassle.

its been no problem for me and i would not have noticed a shortage of these items as:

    i don't smoke

    i don't consume tinned milk

    i don't use sugar

    i don't eat peanuts

i get water in 20 litre containers

small fairy cakes are plentiful at S & P shops........

anymore ''essentials '' you can't get......?

    Bully for you.

And, yes there are plenty of other items in short supply.

  7. Maybe some do it out of frustration as opposed to hate. Hate is a very powerful word.

We Farang are stupid. We know nothing. We invented nothing. We do not understand about the world (the world is Thailand, of course, not anything outside of it). We get ripped off often. Most cannot understand what is said to them in Thai. We are second class citizens in many cases.

The list goes on and on if you read enough here or listen to many Farang who live here and to so many who do not live here. There are many tales of woe.

Hate? No. Frustration and venting some of that frustration? Yes. But we would do that anywhere, wouldn't we?

  8. 8K sin sot. 2 Baht gold. Gold was about 8K Baht I believe in those days. And they had to squeeze that out of me, I was even taken to the ATM to get money and said that was my allowance for the day .

Marriage lasted 2 months. Never again though. In disgust I took back all I had bought her. Mobile phone, clothes and anything else before I threw her out of my rented house. No problem she had the gold and the cash. Interesting experience to have once.

  9. +1.

Some of my Thai friends go out for a meal on their birthday and pick up the tab themselves but that is it really.

My own Thai mother in law does not even know her own birthday!

Same here. My birthdays, I paid for the parties if i wanted one. No presents given to me.

On the other hand, if it is my g/f's birthday I am expected to buy a present  The last (now ex) wanted 1 Baht gold necklace  Not exactly equal rights  No, she did not get it either.

  10. There are big differences in the supply chain, between 7/11 and Lotus express (which I never liked)...

The Lotus near my house has nothing....everything sold out and not restocked.

The 7/11, ~200 m the Soi up, had drinking water in bottles, (but limited to only six bottles per customer, and unknown brand), all sorts of beer, mama soup, canned fish, etc.pp....

In other words....same as before the flood crisis.

Shame on the Lotus Express supply chain/logistics :annoyed:

One 7-11 near me laid off the staff. Now 1 manager and 1 helper working there.

Shelves almost empty again now after a delivery the other day.

  11. As much as I know about the flood situations and where it affects, I would not visit Thailand at this time. This is from a tourist's perspective.

Living here in Thailand it is hard enough to know exactly what it going on regards the floods. I do not blame any tourist for not wanting to come here. Add to that the chaos of food and water shortages it is a crazy situation. To top it all off very few people have any real ideas what is happening to the transport network either.

    Best of to anyone travelling.

If that sounds like doom and gloom to some reading this, tough. I would stay away until some semblance of normality returns.

  12. The water is going to go where it wants to go.....

Quite right, and until they understand that, most attempts to block the flooding will only lead the water to areas where it's beyond any control. But this is the same story again and again and again.

    So no need for canals?

It is quite possible to make the water go where we want it to go, but that needs advanced planing, and there might be the problem.

    +1

  13. Called into my local 7-11 today to top up the phone. they had eggs, bread, crisps, toilet tissue and other items previously unavailable.

Maybe it is slowly getting back to some sort of order.

I noticed stacks of sacks of rice on Soi 1 Pattaya Klang heading towards the Shagwell.

  14. Post the messages you receive about the mails not being delivered, that might help to give you more hints

    Luckily I kept one

  15. Sounds like SPAM to me. I used to get some like that, but a long time ago. In fact I thought most places had stopped that sort of spam. But if you have been on a site and sent some info, be it a Thanksgiving card or something, your address is often passed on.

Could be that someone has CC'd your address in a mass e-mail to people and been picked up from another computer.

Add the mail(s) to your spam list and they should automatically go to your Spam box and you will not have to view them.

    edit - typo

  16. I use Yahoo mail directly and have not had any issues described.

I also use the Yahoo mail system via pop/smtp from my e-mail program and not had any issues there either.

Suggest a virus /trojan sweep of your system

    Thanks for the reply.

I scan my computer regularly for virus / trojans / malaware so cannot be that.

Odd it is UK addresses that are affected.

I'll open a dreaded hotmail account to see what happens re deliveries.
