  1. Hi David48,

Thanks to you and others for bringing interesting threads to TV. The farming in Thailand section is easily the best imo.

Threads like this bring a greater understanding of life in Thailand and show the real life trials and tribulations.

Just out of interest how long does it take to empty and fill a pond that size? Is the pond filled / emptied via a pump, by siphoning or breaching the wall of the pond or a bit of each.

'Haas' is a Thai to English dictionary considered by many to be the 'Bible' for translations from Thai into English. You do however need an English to Thai dictionary as well.

    HeavyDrinker,

I wish I had thought of getting a dictionary, thanks for that idea. Surprised you did not suggest I get a hearing aid as well.

  3. Due to age and having worked in a noisy enviroment I find it very difficult to 'hear' the Thai sounds / tones and therefore find it very difficult to learn Thai.

Can anyone recommend a translation app that works well in Thailand as communication is a problem especially when I go up to my daughters village.

I have heard Sayhi in the uk translate English into Thai on an Iphone.

Are there any other apps that work on different phones that people have used?

    Also which phones work best?

    Thanks for any replies.

  4. In the UK I only use the phone for telephone calls. I very rarely text, I do not take photos on the phone, perhaps I could be persuaded otherwise.

What I really need is a phone to use in Thailand that handles Thai translations apps really well as I am really struggling on the communication front when I go up to the village.

Learning the language is proving a problem as I cannot 'hear' it.

Any guidance would be much appreciated.

  5. Hi whistleblower,

I hope everything went well with your passport application for your daughter.

Can you tell me how long they kept your original passport and birth certificate for or did they just need to verify their authenticity when you handed the application in?

How long did it take for you to get the passport?

Did you need a DNA test to accompany the application?

Where is the best place to get certified translations from?

By after 2007 do you mean from the 1st January 2007?

Does the passport allow you to take your daughter abroad or do you need a separate certificate of permission?

    Thanks

  6. If you are looking for rice husks or rice husk ash it might be worth going to the local brickworks as they often use rice husks to fire the bricks.

The ash that is left over is mixed with the clay to make the bricks. The ash helps determine the final colour of the bricks.

(edit: I did make my own 'soil' using sawdust, sawdust ash and local soil - equal parts. I added small solid pellets for nutrient - seems to drain well but also retain moisture. Tomato plants approx 6'' high from seed in 19 days)

  7. With parental consent 'the girl next door' married at the age of 14 to her husband of 'just' 15 three weeks ago and both work at the local petrol station. It would be interesting to know how they're rights are now affected.

I do have to admit I had to use hand to close my mouth!

They were probably not legally married, just had a traditional marriage ceremony.

If legally married, they will be adults. If not, they are still minors under the law and under the authorithy of their parents.

You are probably right about the wedding being a traditional wedding.

The ceremony appeared to be conducted by the parents and then those present knelt before the couple and tied a piece of string round each of their wrists and offered an envelope.

The couple live in their own place next door to the brides parents'.

  8. Hi Kevin,

You do not say if you may be the potetial father or from what country you come from.

I am going through a similar process myself. I chose to do a DNA test myself. I brought a test kit from the UK, took the swabs from the mother, daughter and myself and sent it back to UK where it was evaluated and had the results in a week. Cost was approx £225 . This only establishes wether or not you or whoever is the father etc,

You can then decide how you would want to proceed.

If you are trying to get an ID and say a british passport you need to contact the British authorities and check what the latest process is required. You may have to go through a lawyer, who will confirm that the photographs are of the people being tested. Then go to relevent approved hospitl / doctor for the test to be done.

You will also have to make sure that the tests comply with any Thai law.

This way is more expensive than the one I chose but cheaper in the long run.

Whatever you do try to make sure that if you are trying to get passport + ID you have the latest requirement satisfied from all relevant authorities other wise you will just have to go through the whole process again. You will of course know if you or the person concerned is related.

I hope this is of some help.

  9. Perhaps I should add a little meat to the bone.

It is my daughters mother who I am concerned about - which obviously affects my daughter.

When I say she does not respond to questions I mean when you call her name she does not respond. You can call her name 6 times and there is 'no one at home'. It is not just me, in the car, her cousin got absolutely no response. He tried several times - nothing.

She will then start praying and be almost in a trance.

She can then start shivering and this is outside so she is not cold.

Sometimes she eats and sometimes she will eat nothing.

She has not been violent yet

  10. Regardless of who the biological father is, the legal husband of the mother is the father.

This may need some clarification as I may not be entirely correct.

That is correct. The law assumes that the husband is the legal father. If it is not the case that he is the legal father, the husband must repudiate the child (renounce the child as being his, for which there is a time limit in which to do this). If he doesn't do this or refuse to do this, the husband remains the legal fahter.

If I became the legal father and gained parental rights without marrying the mother, would I then lose my rights if she decided to get married?

Just when I thought I was gaining a little insight.........:-)

  11. I was not around when my child was born so the mother ‘panicked’ and had another person put their name on the birth certificate.

When I returned to Thailand several years later after being contacted by the mother I had a DNA test, which I administered and was tested in UK. The results showed that I was the father.

I would like to have the birth certificate changed so that I am named as the father as I now provide for mother and child and have been doing so for some time.

The named person is willing to say that he is not the father as shown by the DNA.

At present I am not willing to marry the mother.

So the question is how do I get the birth certificate changed and what are the potential problems and costs?

    Thanks

  12. I have just travelled from Khlong Klhung, near Kamphaeng Phet, using the A & B roads to Hua Hin (1112, 3504, 3282, 333, 321, 4) No problems.

There were signs of a few houses and fields flooded but nothing in comparison to doing the motorway route.

Very little traffic, the only thing to look out for is the occasional large pot hole and the odd beligerent dog. In general the roads were in better condition than the motorways.

  13. Good morning everyone. Thanks for all the information on the roads so far.

I am travelling to Khlong Khlung on tuesday from Hua Hin and would appreciate any updates on the roads and general conditions in that area.

I note that they are going to release 40m cubic metres per day from the Tak dam now according to the Bangkok Post today which I believe is nearly twice the amount being released at the moment.

If any one knows of any hotels in the area the information would be appreciated.

I am travelling by bus to Nakhon Sawan and then taking a taxi to Khlong Khlung does that seem to be the best method?

    TIA
