It's all just too complicated.

Everything i ever did in Thailand i was happy with
no regrets
EXCEPT 1
I would have built a shack instead of a 5 star home
now occupied by the parents living in it with a pig in
what used to be our bedroom, a waste of effort and
money.

Researching the topic, i am alarmed at two things
(1) Peat swamp soil is the result of thousands of years of accumulation of organic
material. Left alone, it is one of the most effective landscapes on earth for sequestering carbon.
But when drained and ignited, it releases a carbon bomb into the atmosphere.
(2) The animals, vegetation and people that are displaced by this.

The answer is simple, people power, find out what products use palm oil
and blockade them, don't buy their products same for the paper pulp, make
it a public awareness campaign and put them out of business, the underlying
factor is greed, you can make a difference.

In Europe a new law state ''no more free plastic bags''
they cost €0.10 cents each and supermarkets report
low sales of the checkout plastic bags, sales of rolls
of plastic bags are going through the roof, you can't
just stop years of habit, they must have an alternative.

W.C. Fields
It was a woman who drove me to drink, and I never had the courtesy to thank her for it.
Now don't say you can't swear off drinking; it's easy. I've done it a thousand times.
I exercise extreme self control. I never drink anything stronger than gin before breakfast.
Say anything that you like about me except that I drink water.
I never drank anything stronger than beer before I was twelve.
Fields gave this rationale for not drinking water:
Fish <deleted> in it.A woman drove me to drink, and I'll be a son-of-a-gun but I never even wrote to thank her.
During one of my treks through Afghanistan, we lost our corkscrew.
We were compelled to live on food and water for several days.
I feel like a midget with muddy feet had been walking over my tongue all night.
Christmas at my house is always at least six or seven times more pleasant than
anywhere else.
We start drinking early. And while everyone else is seeing only one Santa Claus,
we'll be seeing six or seven.

I have many friends in Thailand that hold office, like
lawyer, government workers, police and more,
i have often visited them and stay with them in
their house, nothing has ever been done, no
forms, passport ? didn't know anything about
that? I hold Aussie passport.

Who cares, if they make it too hard i'll just go elsewhere
and take my money with me, i have no attachment to
Thailand, built a house, got kicked out when it was finished,
managed to sell the car, gifted the motor cycle, now i do 6
months in the tropics, 6 months in Europe, i want to own
nothing except the money in a (secure off shore) bank.
So all this bitching over what visa to get, visa runs bull
dust, should i buy a condo,, it's all too much, i'm so happy
to be a nomad 6 month's of the year in South East Asia,
wherever i lay my hat,,,,,,,

It angers me also that in your case, a US citizen, worked
hard payed taxes, stars and stripes etc, YOU HAVE NO
RIGHTS yet if your wife claimed to be a refugee or Mexican
maybe that's not a good one, let's go with refugee, they
would welcome her with open arms, the inequality in the
world sickens me.

Next time your lawnmower is finished replace the grass with
Japanese grass, you will never need to mow, or like my family
did, buy a buffalo.

I once arrived at a 5 star hotel in Bangkok and at reception was
a tall skinny guy holding a glass of red wine welcome drink, had
a white T-shirt that had seen better days and looked dirty, a pair of
small shorts and thongs (flipper flops) a real quality tourist, saved
up his loose change for a holiday in Thailand, i was very embaresed
to be a westerner, the reception girls looked really beautiful and smart,
probably had more money than this high quality tourist.

Funny looking at young western women showing off their
Laos language skills, at any market, can't speak a word
but ''kop jai lai lai'' every chance they can, it made me
laugh one time at the markets, it was all i could hear.

All the good girls have been take
only ugly ones left
don't even bother going to Thailand
did someone say India, now that's
a place for me.
-
Let's go the other way,, what happens if later, years later you
decide you want to return, back to square one, in life we get
ahead sometimes with family connections, friends we made
at school and general networking, who will you network with
in Thailand, buffaloes don't speak English.

If Trump becomes the US President, I would think that, if you are American, Mexico should not even be on your list. If you like latin flavor, try Ecuador or Panama..
I recently read a story on Bloomberg.com on the top 5 places to retire
and Ecuador was at number 1, it surprised me, i'm seriously thinking
of a holiday there, Panama was also there, we hear that Colombia is
also a nice country to live but what worries me is what the country is
famous for so i pass, don't want any red flags on my passport.
I agree with your remark.

I went to the Thai embassy in Lisbon,,
the lady at the desk told me the Embassy
in Lisbon will only issue Visas for Thailand if
you have a residency permit for Portugal, <deleted>,
i have an Australian passport, i went and got
it in the UK
-
Soon the focus will go elsewhere
always does.
-
I would rather pay 500 THB fine, than loose my passport,
to get a new one would cost more, maybe they want to
see the passport to see your visa.
