UK police to join in probe of British tourist murders
UK police officers are to travel to Thailand to help investigate the murders of two British tourists found dead on the island of Koh Tao, BBC reported yesterday.
BBC claimed that Thai Prime Minister Gen Prayuth Chan-o-cha has dropped objections to accepting help in the case after being pressed on the issue in a meeting with UK Prime Minister David Cameron.
The bodies of David Miller, 24, and Hannah Witheridge, 23, were discovered on a beach last month.
Two Burmese men are under arrest.
The police investigation into the murders has been widely criticised. The UK Foreign Office summoned the Thai charge daffaires earlier this week to express concern.
Gen Prayuth met Mr Cameron at a summit in Italy and agreed that a delegation of British officers could travel to Thailand, having previously rejected offers of assistance.
BBC quoted diplomatic source as saying Thai authorities were leading the investigation, but it was important that both of the families can be reassured that it is the murderers that have been brought to justice.
The diplomatic said: There are two areas we are particularly concerned about. One is the verification of the DNA samples of the suspects, making sure there is further independent verification.
And the second is the investigation into allegations of mistreatment of the suspects.
What the PM secured this morning was agreement from the Thai PM that we can send some British police investigators to Koh Tao to work with the Royal Thai Police on this, BBC said.
The discussion between the leaders came at the Asia Europe Meeting in Milan.
Zaw Lin and Win Zaw Htun, both migrant workers from Myanmar, apparently confessed to the killings earlier this month.
Thai police have denied subsequent reports that the pair, both aged 21, then withdrew their confessions.
Both were in court for a pre-trial witness hearing on the island of Koh Samui on Tuesday, but did not testify.
They are charged with conspiracy to murder, conspiracy to rape and robbery, and could face the death penalty if found guilty.
Post-mortem examinations found Mr Miller, from Jersey, died from drowning and a blow to the head, while Miss Witheridge, from Great Yarmouth, died from head wounds.
Police have said DNA found on Ms Witheridge matched samples taken from the suspects.
Concerns about the murder investigation include the fact the crime scene was not sealed off after the killings as well as the fact an early statement was released by police saying that no Thai person could have committed such a crime.
Mr Zaws mother Phyu Shwe Nu has said her son was being made a scapegoat by Thai police, BBC said.

Ah so now the charges are "conspiracy" to rape and murder - not rape and murder, never heard that before...!

After the endless, complicated and contradictory developments and comments concerning this case, it seems to me that it all boils down to one very simple FIRST action, at this stage, for the British investigators to perform : take a DNA sample from the two Burmese guys, with enough witnesses around so that the authenticity of the samples cannot later be questioned, and then compare them with the DNA that the British investigators have taken in Britain from the body.
The only question is : did the British perform such a sampling or did the body of this poor girl go untouched after entering British soil ? I don't recall reading anywhere, clearly, that British authorities had made such a move after recovering the body.
If the DNA of the Burmese guys is compared with samples provided by the Thai police, there will be no end to suspicion of foul play.
The whole system of evidence based on DNA works on the assumption that no one tampers with the samples because the people who perform the sampling are trustworthy and eager to serve true justice. If and when the people in question become suspicious in the eyes of the public and/or the press, then the whole process amounts to nothing, and so called evidence is rightly seen as potential manipulation.
Yep I read somewhere there was an autopsy certainly on Hannah. The law in the UK is that should a citizen be murdered abroad and the body repatriated then an independent autopsy has to be carried out before the body is handed back to the family, I am almost 100% certain this happened with Hannah - I heard perhaps not with David as he's from Jersey, but that's brobably just crap.
I also think a family can ask for specific actions to take place during the autopsy, but whatever, given the UK police are some of the best in the world I would imagine sits automatic to take DNA samples and anything which could be a reference to the case notes.
I would be surprised if they do not have multiple DNA samples from Hannah - hope so.

Total and utter bull shit - again!the uk does not want to point fingers like in the tv pics. their own record on rapes & crime in general is so-so at best. the uk lost so much credibility with the middle east people rapeing there young women in a multi year rape fest that the police knew about, but did nothing.yes the uk will keep mouth closed & pretend to not notice the dead couples family weeping. stiff upper lip, did i say that right?

The UK don't want to get involved otherwise others will point out the human rights abuses in the UK. There are plenty, but they either don't get reported or the people abused are foreigners, so the UK public, press and government don't care. People get locked up in the UK without charge, without trial. That is a fact and no-one cares. Some people that are locked up aren't even told what they are supposed to have done. That's the reality in the UK, so why should the government care what happens here. UK government couldn't give a toss of any UK citizens get murdered abroad.I wonder what the UK Embassy is actually doing. The outrage expressed by people on the Internet has been helpful in putting focus Thai and Burmese leadership . The only thing missing are statements from the UK. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Many on here talk about Thai people not liking Myanmar people, but it's the same in the UK. There are certain nationalities that many UK people don't like. If they get caught up in something, the people think they deserve it. No different to this situation.
Total and utter bull shit!

Brilliant, this is an article I read before and had lost.... This IS REALLY INTERESTING because in one of the lower sections like "In relation to the recent murders" he writes:really...............they need to be lured to this? If tourism to Koh tao is allowed to grow - more tourists will die
"Posts pop up on various facebook groups urging foreigners not to comment to the media, or speak to any outsiders until approval is given by key people on the island. Comments are deleted or self censored. There is an appearance of a wall of silence, either for personal safety, or to protect business interests." There is a link to the Facebook group.
I originally saw this a few days after the murders and the Koh Tao Communtiy Group was an "Open" group, so I took a look and read all the posts and comments from say Sep 12th to 18th and NONE of them mentioned anything about this tragedy, the only thing I read in a comment on selling something was "bla bla but given what happened bla bla"...etc
So this means that no one. None of the 1200 members said "OMG that's horrible...I don't feel safe....what has happened"...etc. and a lot of the people are English, I find this incredibly hard to understand.
Today the community is a closed group! MMMM perhaps the guy who wrote the article is correct, perhaps the control in this island is beyond anything we were aware of.... It's pretty incredible when you think about it!

"I have instructed other inmates to monitor the two Burmese men" - this coming from a prison chief. Not instructing his own men. Or putting more men on the job. But instructing inmates. Since when did the inmates start to work for the prison authorities? Day after day after day, the Thai authorities do nothing but spew stupider and stupider statements. Just when you think it can't get worse, another one comes along and gives a new low. How are we to take anything in Thailand seriously anymore?
Next statement:
"Upon inspection of the shared cell this morning, we are sad to announce that the 2 young suspects had been battered to death in the night. We can only assume the other 58 Bermese inmates turned on them because they had brought discrace to their country"... Nice an tidy!

That Sir, is what most people want to know. Along with, was it tampered with in any way?so how does the DNA match?
How will we ever get an answer? An independent check of source DNA.
Will we ever get it?
Hmm, I never thought it could happen, but is that a chink,of light I see? Far in the distance......
I hope so, not said much on TV before but really feel there is something wrong with this case and having lived here for a while - and Thai wife - we both feel this is wrong.
I can really feel some sort of momentum here but what I cannot fathom is how this can now go backwards - the ultimate loss of face! I mean the PM has rubber stamped this, it's global, social in every way - which is what I think they didn't count on and for my 2 pence is what has caught them with the proverbial pants down!
I do hope someone with what would need to be HUGE balls can face this, admit there was
not the right process, expertise and procedure and go back to square one and do it properly, the international way and transparently - for the sakes of those beautiful people who have already given their short lives to some coward.
RIP

Comparing the corrupt and incompetent RTP, with Andrew Drummond who is having the legal system with all its holes used against him in multiple cases with dodgy lawyers who are abiding the system in an attempt to bankrupt him is just plain stupid. While the BIB may not have the greatest reputation around neither does Drummond. Looks like he will be fleeing Thailand very soon and can only hope that will mean an end to his personal investigative stories of people he is in legal battles with. At one time the guy had some relevance. He used to be an active poster here too but appears he has wore at his welcome on TV too.
I do not know Andrew Drummond but since I am going through the same experience with cheating lawyers and two thieving mafia gangs I can tell you it is not pleasant.
I understand that Drummond was writing about other cheating foreigners but why anyone thinks that is a bad thing I don't know. He did stick his head over the parapet but many are just targeted for criminal gain and the failings of the legal and court system here are very well understood by these criminals who use every loophole to their advantage and your destruction.
I hope you are never targeted!
Hear hear, AD is a good guy and has had this thing tight since the beginning...he was the first guy to post the real names and passport photos of these young people. There are some corrupt people in the legal system here..I know!

No balo, I'm Thai and the Thai reporter was saying that but it was on the first day of the incident. Anyhow, I'm doubting about Mr Miller's phone whether it was at the scene, if his friend (Chris) could verify this, will be very useful information.
Maybe because it was incorrect news? Its not always easy to translate from thai to english. It's been reported in the news few days after the incident that semen found inside David's as well. Later on, no one talked about this. Now all old news has been removed from websites.
Here is a screen shot from the TV channel with the phone found at the suspect address... I have not seen the pictures of David's phone so cannot corroborate ...

I had my Thai wife watch and listen to this, took a screen shot on my mobile but not sure how to upload it.. It was in a plastic back as the police held it, the accused hand cuffed in the bushes pointing to it, but still my wife says they refer to it as "her" phone! But it doesn't look pink like hers.... Hope
It helps.
Sorry this was regarding the video about the found phone at the back of the accused dwellings - not sure why it didn't attach to that thread
Sometimes you just cant make it up

Almost pissing myself laughing! Honestly your style of writing and your experiences are funny, I have also seen some decisions made by Thais similar to yours and it just leaves you with your chin on the floor and scratching your head like Stan Laural - I too have never experienced anything as illogical as the Thai cognitive process.
Great post!
