The political turmoil in Thailand is a symptom. It's not the disease. The real root cause of Thailand's woes is legal - not political at all. And the legal problem is that there is inequality before the law. Nobody of a certain class or position, irrespective of their political affiliations, will ever see the inside of a prison no matter what crimes they might commit. And the same goes for the members of their families, or people under their patronage. Murder, grand theft, embezzlement on an industrial scale...if you are rich enough or connected enough nobody can touch you.
And so you end up with absurd headlines like 'Chalerm calls for Suthep's arrest' And the media publish it like it meant anything. But in reality, both of them know that they can do whatever they want and nothing's going to happen to either of them. Gosh, a little wheeling and dealing and they could be coalition partners in the next governenment. Meanwhile, back in the real world, they'd have been sharing a cell together years ago.
And that's the problem in a nutshell. None of these people have the slightest regard for the law because it simply doesnt' apply to them. And until Thailand sorts that out, and has equality before the law, no civilized or modern political system of any kind can work.

I haven't visited CR in 10-12 years or so. The OPs post brought back some good memories and I will see what the years have brought when I relocate to LOS in August.
10-12 years? The traffic will be a bit of a shock to you, that's for sure. I remember that 10 years ago, people would say that Chiang Rai was like Chiang Mai used to be before it got so busy down there. Well,.....

The meter taxis sit in a bunch outside the airport gate on the main road down to the new stadium. It's probably about a 100 metre walk.
