  1. Anyone done this?

I did it about fifteen years ago but it seems that since the '97 economic crisis it's pretty difficult to get any kind of loan as a foreigner. I bought my current vehicles through finance companies but they are registered in my company name rather than my own (with me as the guarantor).

  2. Now, getting back to original question, which was about hosting, not domain registration... :o ...even if your domain stays registered with CS, you can host it with someone else. It may be that they have given you a package price for both. Annual domain-only fees should be under $25.

Loxinfo is charging me 2400 Baht per year for hosting (10 MB) and another 2400 Baht for three POP3 accounts. Domain renewal is 900 Baht.

According to Network Solutions, my company is the registrant. Loxinfo is the technical contact. For administrative contact, my name and address is shown but with the E-mail address of [email protected].

  3. Are you sure you mean the domain registration will expire? Your domain registration company (the guys who said "yes, blah.com is available for $10 per year") is not necessarily related to your web-hosting company (the guys who say "yes, we'll give you X email addresses and Y mb of space for your webpage, for $few per month"). And of course neither are related to your ISP (the guys who say "yes, you can have ADSL/dialup in your home").

I mention that mainly because Loxinfo also handled my domain registration and so it expires at the same time as the hosting contract.

Last year, the domain did expire (I expected somebody would send me a bill or something when the time was coming close but they didn't). I contacted a local company, Web Hosting Thailand (or some name similar to that) who told me that they could not renew the domain name; I needed to do it through Loxinfo. Thus another year's contract. Was I informed wrong?

  4. Does anybody have a recommendation for a website hosting company in Thailand? My site is currently hosted by Loxinfo but it seems expensive to me for what I'm getting. Since the domain registration will be expiring in a couple of months, I thought that now would be the time to make a change.

Although my site itself is pretty small (in terms of bytes), I'm interested in E-mail storage space since I sometimes need to receive large attachments. Another consideration would be that I'd like to have the ability to assign several E-mail addresses.

It's not necessary that the actual server hardware be located in Thailand but I'd want to hook up with a company that's not likely to go out of business in the near future.

  5. If you are reasonably sure that the water is already biologically safe (from a chlorinated source like MWA or PWA) then all that you probably need is a prefilter to get rid of suspended solids and an activated carbon filter for "flavor". As someone mentioned, including a RO stage would be top of the line.

If you are using water from a well or other source, you'd be best to include a UV stage to kill any bacteria.

  6. Just to update anybody who might be interested....

I received the package from True which was as Mattnich described. It included what True calls an "ADSL modem", an ethernet PCI card, cables, CD and User ID.

The "modem" is a Huawei MT 800. My understanding is that this device has PPoE built in but that True has disabled it. I found a couple of websites (search for "Huawei MT800") that describe a similar setup in India and how to reset the MT 800 to factory defaults and then input the PPoE data.

I wasn't brave enough to try this, at least not yet.

I ended up installing the ethernet card that True supplied as part of the package in one of my machines and sharing the connection.

Right now, it works sort of OK; meaning that sometimes the shared connection works and sometimes it doesn't. I guess this is more of a Windows problem though.

Anyway, my "connect speeds" to True have been ranging from about 680 to 980 kbps; depending on time of day. I bought the I M package.

Realizing that I should probably just cough up the money for a router, does anybody have any tips regarding Windows XP shared connections?

  7. I've been asked to consider teaching a course at a Thai university. I have no problem with my knowledge of the subject (I guess that's why they asked me to help teach it) but, other than a few seminar presentations here and there, I have no formal teaching experience.

Over the years, I've sat through more than a few lectures given by others. Some instructors, in my opinion, were much more effective than others. Is there a place that you can learn the "theory" of teaching in a few easy lessons? If not, would taking a TEFL course (even though I won't be teaching English, or even want to teach English) be of any benefit in this regard?

I'm not being offered big money for this but it would probably look good on my resume. Also, if I decide to do this, I want to do it right.

  8. I checked the literature that True sent me and it refers to an "ethernet modem". The person that I talked with on the phone definitely called it a router though.

A friend of mine who recently signed up for the savm package tells me that it is made by Huaiwei but very little in the way of a user manual is included in the package and he just has it hooked up to one PC anyway.

Apparently it comes with an ethernet card. Is there any problem with having two ethernet cards in the same computer and then sharing the connection via the LAN?

A messenger is supposed to deliver the "modem" and a contract on Wednesday. According to the customer service rep, I'll be able to use it three days after they receive all of the paperwork.

  9. I've just put in my request for a True ADSL connection. I understand that I will get a modem/router with a single ethernet port as part of the deal. Can this device be connected directly to my existing ethernet hub? If not, could I install an additional ethernet card in one of the computers on my network and then "share" the connection via Windows XP?

I've go two desktop computers and a laptop that is also sometimes connected through the hub.
