I wanted it. I got it. Far from easily. I was in the running for years before the win. There was intrigue.

It didn't make me younger, thinner, sexier, or richer ...

I get the feeling that after last year's "drama" transam really needs to win this. He won't admit it, but it's obvious.

Not sure that's an argument to give it to him, but there you have it.

BTW, I spoke too soon that campaigning is futile. It won't have the power it did before on the VOTING thread because you can't change your votes anymore, but I reckon there will probably be some (or a LOT) of nudging at the local forum levels.

For example if a candidate is well known on specific subforums, they could try to drive people to go to this voting thread and persuade them to vote for them, or whoever they're campaigning for.

There is also unseen lobbying. Old boys club, don't you know?

Especially if it's close and only a vote or two makes a difference.

This might be more likely to happen after the TOP FIVE are selected.

    Yawn yawn

  2. I'm 99% sure the rates are exactly the same for regular taxis or minivans in New York City. One is allowed 4 passengers, the van 5. NO difference in rates.

When you get to the airport, a person is there at the head of the taxi line. You tell them the destination and the give you a piece of paper with the fare. That's what the driver has to accept. This got rid of the "long" routes some drivers would take to boost their fare. Unfortunately, it didn't work the other way back to the airport and it's not unusual to have them go the long way...usually saying it's due to less traffic. Which sometimes is true...

But overall, they might have a point here. Rates are very low.

Rates have just recently increased by about 12%.... these guys are forgetting that if they give a good service they will get tips (not of everyone but some will tip well)... if they start charging for every little thing, people won't give tips... simple.

  3. And here's me thinking a Swiss Roll was food.

All very well for those who can afford it but the emphasis surely must be on improving education here so good education is available to all and not just rich kids.

And lose their enormous advantage.... do you think they will allow that to happen?

  4. Lee Kuan Yew and the Singapore model was indeed Thaksin's role model for nation building when the ex-PM was in office before the 2006 coup. Lee criticised leaders around the world, including many Thai elite, for mishandling their countries, but he praised Thaksin for visionary leadership and economic management. Lee has run Singapore like his company and hence the world knows the country as 'Singapore Inc", so did Thaksin who tried to make the Kingdom "Thailand Inc".

    Nah...

Lee Kuan Yew had the vision and leadership to build a country/nation

Thaksin's vision was to fill his pockets and those of his cohorts with a nations wealth.

Singapore is almost free of corruption, ranked 7th in the World, whereas Thailand is 85th. That's something that Thaksin had no real ambition to rectify.

  5. A clutch of Somalis? what the .... is a clutch when referring to people?

I know my GF always wants to by new clutch wallets .... but not ones made out of Somalis, maybe from crocodile or python

Clutch is the term for eggs in a nest, possibly they meant the raided the Somali's "nest" or lair, but anyway, dehumanizing.

Nothing at all wrong with using 'a clutch' when referring to a small group of people considered as a unit... They are all Somali and living together so that's the connection.

    Why is it dehumanizing?

  6. Doesn't this benefit the rich, who have millions in land just sitting doing nothing?

In a corrupt system, the rich usually don't pay. I can just see the land being reclassified as being used for farming.... and all they did was hire one person to plant and tend to a few plants. Land / property taxes always tend to push people off of land once they can no longer keep up with payments (lots of property comes up for auction in Canada and the US because of back taxes not paid.... the rich would have paid or sold).

Totally agree... this would have benefitted the rich as they buy the land off the people who can't pay the taxes at knock down rates.

  7. Wow! The criminal clean-up nicked 2 motorbike thieves. Got to assume Pattaya is a very low crime area. Good to know the police are working so hard.

Working hard stood outside the police station on beach road nicking tourists for not having a Thai motorcycle license, you mean?... maybe these guys just happened to be driving past on their stolen bikes and were mistaken for tourists. coffee1.gif

  8. "... and ‘the wai’ or the Thai greeting - a show of respect, as well as the friendly nature of the Thai people ..."

I had to think long and hard, the last time I was "wai'd" by any Thai was more than 12 months ago.

Don't know where you live, but either you don't go out or you are a very bad man :-)

Get them everyday up here in Issan.

It could well be both the things you mention ... but actually (I'm in Bangkok), I think it's more a reflection on how much Thai people change when they live and work in Bangkok. There's a very big difference in how foreigners are treated in the "tourist" areas and the more rural areas. This has been most noticeable in the past 5 years, prior to that it was very different.

I also live in Bangkok and get waied pretty much everyday and just asked a couple of friends who also get waied on a regular basis.... you're either exaggerating the issue or you have a mean face.... try changing your attitude or along with all the other moaners on here... find another country!
