  1. I am two days snake free - I hope.

After a lot of different failed attempts to remove the snake (or snakes as it turned out) we had to cut open the ceiling and get the guys from the local snake farm to prise them out.

Two young ones had already dropped out and the guys got what we assume is the mother (in the photo) and the last young one from behind the air con unit on the wall.

The ceiling has been quiet for two days now - long may it continue.

  2. I can understand ditching the old one, but why ugly up the yard with another one.

There are spirit house dumps along some rural roads. Just ask around.

My Thai partner would not sleep at night w00t.gif

You might be surprised how quickly a partner can adapt to a new home without a spirit house - if the new home is a nice upgrade :)

  3. Currently, I have water from Or Bor Tor (City water) which goes through a filter into a 2,000 litre tank from there to the pump and into the house.

But supply is virtually non existent now and I have had a well dug.

Now I need to connect it to the existing system and I would also like to have a supply of water when the electricity goes off.

My idea is to put a pump next to the well, pump the water to a new 1,000 litre tank that will be placed on the roof (which is above the existing tank, filter and pump).

From the new tank the water will join the existing system before the filter. So it will go through the filter, then the original tank and then the original pump and into the house.

To get a water supply when there is no electricity, I intend to add a "bypass run" starting after the filter and rejoining after the original pump. It would bypass the original tank and original pump.

It would rely on gravity to push the water from the new tank into the existing system.

My question is: will it work both with electricity and without?

I have attached a diagram of my plans.

    Any constructive comments gratefully received.

  4. Many thanks for all the suggestions guys, I will definitely be using some of them.

A quick update as I have been out most of the day.

When I came back I saw a couple of centimetres of tail hanging out from the back of the air con in the room.

It wasn't enough to get a good grip and the owner pulled it inside the air con unit.

However, it did pop his head out of the side of the unit a couple of minutes later and it is a tree snake (the same as fxe1200 posted).

But he pulled his head in again when I went for him and then 10 minutes later I could hear him moving around above the ceiling again.

Tomorrow I will take down the downlights, possibly spray something noxious into the ceiling space to give the fella some encouragement, and hope that he will drop down through the holes.

  5. Snakes are usually silent. Might consider birds roosting in your attic. This is just part of the mess we found in ours.

Very true, but it is the moving across debris on the ceiling that is causing the noise.

Of course anything is possible, but there isn't any feasible access for birds or squirrels through the concrete roof.

  6. Why not just leave it there? It probably wont hurt anything and when it's ready it will leave.

Probably the best idea, unless the noise it's making is disturbing you, assuming of course, it is a snake.

Inspecting ceiling voids with no access is always an issue, back home one would hire a 'SeeSnake' https://www.ridgid.com/th/en/seesnake-standard-camera and poke it through one of the downlighter holes, good luck with that here sad.png

EDIT Maybe you could do something with a webcam and portable light?

I did try this with a small light and mobile phone. I think i will give it a go with a better light and video camera hooked up to the laptop if possible.

  7. Why not just leave it there? It probably wont hurt anything and when it's ready it will leave.

It is quite noisy as it moves across debris on the ceiling and I fear it might damage some electrics at some point.

I suspect it also might not be able to get out. While snakes never fail to amaze me with their physical abilities it would be a challenge to climb vertically up the inside of a blue water pipe, although I don't know exactly what the set up is above the ceiling, which is the only way out.

  8. We have got a room about 3m x 4m with a wall air con unit.

The room has a false ceiling with about 30cm gap between the ceiling and the roof.

The ceiling has 4 downlights and no access.

2 days ago we started to hear loud noises from above the ceiling which might be a snake sliding around.

It could also be another animal but it doesnt sound like it has claws or talons.

And the only possible way something could have got in there is through a 2cm gap made by the pipe from the air con unit as it goes through the roof.

Short of pulling down the ceiling anybody got any ideas how to deal with whatever is up there?

PS we called Rentokill and they wanted 25,000 baht just to come and have a look!

  9. This has been done to death. Just go to the airport. I have not heard of anyone who is at the airport with a plane ticket who hasn't simply had to pay the fine and been allowed to leave.

Yes..just front up at the airport a good hour earlier than you normally would to satisfy immigrations paperwork etc..It's not like you will be the first or last person this has happened to.Just be polite and show respect pay the fine...and don't make a habit of doing it again..that's taking the pi.s!

That's pretty much how it went.

Bought a return flight to Malaysia, checked in, went through security, queued up for the passport check.

The immigration officer just said "you have overstayed, you have to pay, do you have money?"

She went off to get a couple of forms and a receipt book, sat me down at a desk to fill out the forms, take the money and write out a receipt.

    Never asked why I overstayed.

By the end, we were chatting about pros and cons of being married to a person from another country and the difficulties of getting a visa for UK.

Flew to Malaysia, entered, exited, flew back to Thailand an hour and a half later and got 90 days stamp.

An expensive day out but good to be back on the straight and narrow!

  10. This has been done to death. Just go to the airport. I have not heard of anyone who is at the airport with a plane ticket who hasn't simply had to pay the fine and been allowed to leave.

Clearly it hasn't been. As someone who doesn't have any experience or acquaintances in this matter a simple question seemed appropriate and potentially very helpful.

As it turns out, the rest of your comment was accurate and would have been very helpful if you hadn't preceded it with the unneccesary bitchy comment at the start.

  11. DannyDokota. You thank Joe for his advice but make no comment about Steve's comments.

If you have a Multi O visa you should be bright enough to keep to the rules. If you are picked up and chucked in jail you will not have a nice time.

He asked which would be the best of three posed options. Ubonjoe answered his question without offering unsolicited advice about the remote possibility he would be "picked up" en route to the airport or about demonstrating that he spoke some words of Thai to impress Immigrations officers, as if that had anything to do with reality.

    Exactly.

I thanked Joe for his advice because it was useful, as always, and he is one of those contributors to TV that make it worth while. He passes on his knowledge/experience without adding unnecessary hyperbole.

In a nutshell, Steve said that overstaying is wrong and prison is bad. Both of which I know and neither had anything to do with my question.

Out of interest, why do you think having a Multi O visa makes a person bright?

  13. What's the best course of action with a 4 week overstay on a 1 year, multi entry Non Imm 'O' visa valid until April next year?

    A. Go to the airport tomorrow pay the fine and do a 1 day round trip to a neighboring country

    B. Wait until Immigration office opens on Monday and go to see them before doing a visa run either by air or land

    C. Go back to home country ASAP and pay fine at airport

thanks in advance for any help

  14. We are just getting under way with my wife's settlement visa.
She has recently met the English language requirements at Vantage Siam in Bangkok, and now we want to start the application.
Just to confirm, despite changing its name, the website to use is still: ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk, right ?
In order to meet the financial requirements I will need to show my income from rental property in UK and some savings.
Our two children both have UK passports. Do we need to include them in calculating how much income is required?
Is it still correct that rental income has to be on bank statements covering the previous 12 months (as against 6 months for a salary)?
Can I show savings I have in a joint account with my sister ? I think the answer to this is no but it would make things simpler if I could sneak them in!
We are in the process of buying a house in UK but the sale may or may not be completed before the application is submitted. In the meantime, we can say we are going to stay with my mother whose house would pass the overcrowding criteria. Would this be acceptable?
    Any replies gratefully received.
PS I remember reading a very good thread on finance requirements last year but can't seem to find it now.
  15. I am getting about 20 of these little blighters everyday in the bathroom.

They are very small maybe 0.5cm and black.

They are very easy to kill manually as they sit still on the wall for long periods.

Any idea what they are, are they dangerous and how can I get rid of them?

Regular bug spray doesn't work and the product the Mrs chucks down the toilet 3 times a week doesn't work either.

  16. I think it depends how long you are visiting for.

While Krabi town is one of the very few Thai towns that is quite pleasant in its own right its not exactly a must-do in Thailand.

It is cheaper than Ao Nang, has more Thai eating places, a night market and a nice riverside.

2 or 3 nights and you're done (again depending on how much time you have in Thailand).

Long term I can see why people choose it over Ao Nang but then if I was giving up the beaches/tourist resorts I would be heading for Phuket Town/Kathu, somewhere like that in the south of Thailand, where there are more ameneties nearby.
