  3. It was an amazing show indeed. Especially impressive was how the entire thing was not a copy of anything, but a melding of Hill tribe, Thai, and European traditions. Big thanks to Gerry and his students.

  4. After a nice speedy few months downloading stuff with utorrent, and having no problem port forwarding, suddenly after using my router for ten minutes or so the speeds drop from 100kB to 20kB and when I check to see if my chosen utorrent port is forwarded, it no longer is. rebooting the router fixes the problem but only for another ten minutes or so.

anybody having the same problem? anyone know how to fix it?

did you try opening another port without resetting the router? Having no problems with Hinet TT&T. Somehow http is a lot slower though for the last week or so.

    perhaps a move to Usenext?

yes, tried that. only resetting the router will do. i just got about two hours of fast service, and the speed dropped again. port now blocked. is there some way they can do that? and some way to get around it?

  6. the good thing, however, is that it's much cheaper to fix a broken camera here than it is overseas due to low labor costs. you just bring it to the sony headquarters on hang dong road a few kilometers south of airport plaza.

unfortunately, second hand stuff seems very hard to come by in chiang mai, and even all of thailand. at home everything is on craigslist or ebay or at countless second hand shops. i wonder where all the second hand stuff goes - probably gets handed down through one's extensive extended family.

i'm curious, though. which camera are you looking at getting and why? it's true that the small sony cameras did hit a peak somewhere around last year and due to the increasing number of megapixels, have been getting poorer and poorer reviews.

if you can, get a fuji f30 or f31. still considered by many to be the best compact digital camera ever made. amazing low light capabilities, and the battery lasts forever. the f40 isn't bad either. stay away from the f50.

by the way, just bought a sony a700 and am very happy with it. sony dslrs are excellent, but overpriced in thailand.

  7. This link is to a virtual map of Chang Mai which was posted on another forum by a guy called "Dirk"

    http://www.mapjack.com/

I'm quite impressed with it. Hopefully in time, further Thai towns & cities will be added.

This is from 'GoogleEarth,' a free program that will show you most everywhere in populated towns and cities around the world. Unfortunately, this map of Chiang Mai, although dated as '2008,' is about three years out of date.... Looking at my house I can see the old movie theater that was torn down more than three years ago, first turning the lot into a market that failed, and now a few bars that are doing fairly well. This is up Huaykaew Road just a few hundred meters east of the Rincom intersection behind the new BBQ restaurant. However, the map is quite detailed if you take these three years into account. I do recommend Google Earth to anyone interested in looking over areas to visit. It is detailed enough that I could find my old apartment building where I grew up, the house I built many years later in New England, and even the small Zen temple in the middle of the bamboo forest next to my house in Japan. It's like looking at my past.

When ever I think of the past, it brings back so many memories.... :o

actually mapjack is different. it's not google earth. it's done by a guy named bjorn who lives in chiang mai - local boy does good. the images on mapjack are only a couple of weeks old. it's awesome. they're going to do other cities in thailand pretty soon.

  8. where is that? i'd like to know where there are 3-4 silkscreen tee shirt places.

I was staying on Sirimangklajarn at the time. That is the street parallel to nimanhemin towards the moat.

so where are the t-shirt places on sirimankalajan? i don't remember seeing any but i'll drive down there and take a look. cheers.

  9. If you are staying at the same CONDO , along that street there is at least 3-4 silkscreen tee shirt and shirt printer..

if it small amount try .. JUPATA . or there is also 1-2 shop all the way .. at the T junction turning into the street where you stay .

right after the shop that sell all the second hands clothes .

    good luck

  10. Cotton, linen and silk robes are all found in the hotels and spas, in various styles.

Pick a style, find your fabric and have them made up. Post again if you need further help.

P.S. Night Market will surely have silk robes.

thanks. i've already got the design. what i need is terry cloth. know where i can get it?

  11. Looked for the "white shop" but couldn't find it. Can you point me in the right direction?

What about other kinds of bathrobes? Anyone know where to find good cheap bathrobes made out of some other kind of material?

    Thanks.

  12. anybody know where i might start looking for uncut terry cloth (the material used for towels and bathrobes)? i want to have some bathrobes tailored. i don't think it's available through the regular material shops at warorot market.

also, if anyone knows where i could find cheap ready-made terry cloth bathrobes, that would be cool too.

sounds odd in this weather i know. but there's a method to my madness.

  13. oddly i fixed the original problem by changing the ip address of my router. seems there was some conflict with something on tot's end. it works much better now. i have no idea why. mystery.

After nearly three years of acceptable service, I have been experiencing the same "dropped connection" problems on TOT as you, starting about 1 or 2 months ago. I upgraded from 512kps to 1mbs about three months ago. (Of course, average real download time remains 50Kps to 120kps!)

Can you give us a step-by-step tutorial on how you did that? (changing ip address of router?)

it depends on your router/modem. most routers can be accessed by typing 192.168.1.1 in your browser address bar. then a page should pop up with configuration options. there should be some place on one of those pages where you can change 192.168.1.1 to something else - i suggest 192.168.1.2.

    Good luck!

  14. i went a few months ago and was pleasantly surprised. it was very enjoyable. the best part was the stroll around the lake, which you can do at your leisure instead of just zipping by in the tram. if you go in the early evening it's only 100 baht for foreigners, half that for Thais.

Also - not many people know but the Royal Flora Ratchaphruek is still (not officially) open, next door to the Night Safari and is totally free. It's worth a visit later in the afternoon - lots to see despite being in a sort of limbo.

Go to the Royal Flora at 2 or 3 pm, then head over to the Night Safari at 5pm and you'll have a great day for only 100 baht. Bring a hat, of course, as the Royal Flora is very exposed.

  16. there's a book by alan carr that has helped many many people to stop smoking.

    you can download it here:

    http://www.filehosting.cc/?d=ABF1433D3

a close friend of mine was hypnotized to stop smoking in chiang mai and the only reason it worked was because she didn't want to admit she'd spent so much money to a fraud. ever wonder why these guys charge so much and don't offer a money back guarantee?

    good luck with your endeavor.

  17. sorry to sunshine on your parade, but it was 81 degrees Fahrenheit (27 Celsius) in los angeles today and not a cloud in the sky. also, so dry that after going running for half an hour in the afternoon i barely even worked up a sweat.

still, i miss the chiang mai humid haze. looking forward to getting back soon.

  18. the area with all the rasta-type bars.

go north into the small soi off ratwithi rd that runs along the western border of the irish pub, then make a left into the big parking lot directly across from eagle house 2. pass 'babylon' (formerly the rasta cafe) on your right, then the new location of 'roots rock reggae' and you're there. make sure to stop into cafe del sol for cocktails afterwards. amy from chicago is said to make the best cocktails in town. also getting good reports is 'zoe in yellow' for vegan gourmet food, if you're into that sort of thing.

salsa kitchen is also really excellent for mexican/caribbean food.

  19. Oh dear. My my my. Well......I have changed alot in the last 15 years as well. The pollution is from my own leisurely pursuits however.

So.... you really should just post about wanting a cycling friend, my friend. Use the subtitle function. Or properly use the title function. Or risk turning some people off, not reaching those you want to reach, and so on. But enjoy your rides if your pollution thread actually finds you somebody. The mornings and early evenings are beautiful right now.

And you know, there's also this sexy undertone to your post. Maybe I'm in. Just how do I help you wake up ?

realthaideal, you'd read sexual innuendos into a lease agreement or the back of a box of cereal. boom-chicka-wah-wah.

  20. Not a buffet with impressive decor...but good food at a good price:

Try Buffet House on Huay Keaw, about 100 meters west of the end of the Super Highway, and just after Ricome Market. 120 baht for dinner, 90 baht for lunch

that place is gross. actually it's okay if you stick to the salads and quasi-japanese, but the entrees and pastas and such are without merit. my humble (and gastrointestinal) opinion.

  21. actually the cheapest and healthiest buffet is at seven eleven.

just order the cheapest burger on the menu, throw it away, and load up on all the lettuce tomatoes onions and cucumbers. squirt some mayo on (and a bit of mustard, for class), and you've got an all you can eat salad.

you have to keep bugging them to refill the salad bar but if you're pushy enough they'll do it.

19 baht and pretty good for you.

Note: ketchup and chilli sauce with a touch of mayo tastes a little like french dressing, and of course ketchup and mayo make thousand island dressing.

all you can drink soda for 13 baht too if you just keep refilling the cup over and over before you check out.
