  1. My father's house is in Bang Phli so a long way out (around 16km mark)... nowhere is going to be close.

*grin* I am considering renting somewhere closer to where I'm learning for a few weeks and seeing him weekends/some evenings etc... I think we might get along better that way too!

  2. I like the Thong Lor school, located right at the bottom of the stairs of the Thong Lor BTS station, even numbered soi side.  Their curriculum is structured as 30 hour modules based on 2 weeks, 3 hours per day, 5 days a week.  They should be able to take you from zero to basic communication in 4 weeks depending on your language aptitude.

You can get individual or group instruction.  I've got 3 phone numbers for them (and no, I'm not affiliated with them in any way):

    02 712 0886

    02 391 6358

    02 390 0244

    Chok dee  :o

How far ahead should you book? I'm not going to be coming again until next November :-/

    Thanks again :D

  3. Where in Bangkok offers a course in basic Thai (mostly conversation) that lasts about 4 weeks?

My father married a Thai woman a little over a year ago, and while she speaks quite good English, most of her family don't speak any. I'd like to be able to talk to them (at least a little), the courses here are appalling and I don't have the motivation/ability to do it through books and tapes.

I was hoping for a course that was 3-6 hours a day, 5 days a week or similar, with minimal study outside course hours (practicing conversation on relatives is OK, but spending every evening with my nose buried in a book is unappealing).

    Any recommendations?

    Thanks :o

  4. i also have no symptoms other than i had adult acne and irregular periods... but i saw on an ultrasound when they made the diagnosis that i definitely have PCOS.  ask your doctor to check!

I don't have irregular periods. Regular as (Swiss) clockwork, have been since I was 12. I've had 1 period 4 days late in the last 10 years... every other one has come on the expected day (not even a day out!)

But thanks for the concern :o

  5. well you are only 21 so my post doesn't apply- but most likely, if accutane works for you, you have the cystic kind rather than acne rosacea.  acne rosacea is hormonal.  you have to check with your doctor of course to know what is best for you, but for those of you with adult acne, check out the spironolactone route. if you do a search on adult acne you will probably find some info.  also many woman with adult acne have PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), which isn't too dangerous but affect fertility, so you should ask your doctor to check for it in an exam.

Well, it does apply, really- my body hasn't changed for the last 5 years, in shape, height, acne, whatever- whereas for most women they'd quite likely still be spreading and reducing in acne-so I have the body and hormones of your average woman in her early-to-mid twenties (23-25), not 21.

The truth is, my acne will be the same when I'm 23, and when I'm 30. I won't suddenly lose my acne at 23, nor will it become treatable by birth control pills (although both would be lovely).

I have no symptoms of PCOS aside from acne, no point testing for it (for me). Certainly for other women, who have a history of glucose intolerance, weight gain, hirsutism or irregular periods it might be.

  6. My father's cousins from Denmark (sort of, distant family relationship) are coming to Thailand in January and staying with him- they say they really love Thai food.

...I'm worried what they're going to think of actual Thai food, outside fried rice and maybe pad thai (minus the chilli)

  7. accutane can be very dangerous so make sure you see a doctor before you take it. they are supposed to test your blood every month when you are on it so that they can ensure proper liver function etc.

if you have acne past the age of say 23, you have a hormone imbalance. usually this is caused by elevated testosterone levels (referred to as androgeny). you might also have ovarian cysts which aggravate it.  one solution is to take spironolactone along with a low dose, monophasic pill. spironolactone helps neutralize the testosterone.  i have been taking it myself for a year and have perfect skin now.  i order it from a pharmacy in bangkok. make sure to ask your doctor, and keep in mind it can be dangerous in higher doses, but it definitely solved all my skin probs.

I'm 21, and still have acne- started my period when I was 10 and reached full height when I was 12.

Birth control pills don't fix it. I don't have elevated testosterone. I don't have ovarian cysts.

What does work (and the only thing that works) is Roaccutane and tretinoin (Retin-A) in between courses. They're unfortunately very risky, though.

Cathyy- the implants last between 3 and 5 years. Unfortunately, the NuvaRing has yet to be released in large parts of the world.

  8. and for my experience when  i had BFs.. people  get it..( they just  think im a  genetic girl)

Checking to make sure she doesn't have a Y chromosome.

Forget adam's apple, timbre of voice, size of feet, mannerisms etc.

I have found only one sure-fire way to tell.

The palm of the hand of a genetic male is roughly square shaped. A genetic female's palm is narrower making a rectangle.

    *peers at hand*

    :D

I must be genetically male... and all these years I'd thought I was female both in geno- and pheno-type. :o

  9. Just another point- a few pages back a number of people were claiming that those who fit an XL, even farang women, must do so because they're fat. (And how they/their wives/whoever were much smaller through fantastic diet and exercise)

I'm overweight now, but that doesn't change my Thai sizing much. When I was scrawny as anything but an adolescent highly competitive athlete, I would have been an XL here due to broad shoulders and wide hipbones... not "big boned" in the way where someone is a bit chubby (like I am now), but big boned in that I had bones sticking out everywhere which made it impossible to fit into Thai sizes.

On the other hand, I have a guy friend who'd probably fit into S or M Thai sizes (width-wise) despite being 6'4".

I was recently told by some of my bustier friends that Lotus is now carrying larger size bra's ( these are women who wear a D cup) They normally had to bring everything back from the US or UK.

I looked at some of these bras when one of mine up and died on me- they were hideous! Looked fairly solid in construction but I can't imagine many women below 50 wanting to wear the ones I saw.

  10. Back to the topic at hand: Agreed on t-shirts and tanks at Tescos, forget Pratunam as even one of our staff who is stick thin finds those clothes small. I like Gisele's idea about getting pants made (trousers for you brits!) too bad I live on an island and dressy for me is clean shorts and a t-shirt :o

Actually, wandering through the guts of Pratunam market (not the outside bit, which was awful) I found a pile of lovely clothing that fit me. I'm a 14-16 in Australia (don't know how that translates to other countries' sizes, but it's the average size here). Some of the shirts are "men's shirts" but they drape over a female figure very well. I also got some lovely skirts and even a pair of jeans!

  11. Other possibilities (which I wouldn't recommend) are the patch (doesn't stick in the humidity) the little things you get inserted under the skin (dont' like the idea of not being able to stop immediately if necessary) and injections (absolutely not--gave my sister horrible problems which she had to suffer with for over 2 months until it finally exited her system).

I actually used Implanon (the implants under your skin) and found them to be the easiest, lowest side-effects contraception I ever used... To get it removed is a 15 minute procedure under local anaesthetic. When I no longer needed it, I went to my local family planning clinic and had it removed the next day- had normal cycles back within a month.

I imagine in Bangkok or one of the other major cities (if it's available) it'd be very easy to get it removed, if you didn't like it.

BTW, there's no scarring left (there was a 4mm x 1mm removal scar) and you'd never know that I had it.

  12. I've not had trouble getting decent coffee in Thailand. Certainly, the standard of the coffee I've had at most restaurants has been better than the over-sweetened and flavoured crud you get at Starbucks and the like.

No one has ever tried to give me instant coffee at a restaurant... although I have heard that some Thai restaurant owners believe that farang *prefer* instant coffee?

  13. Is gold cheaper here than in other countries?

If it was I would buy it by the tonne and sell it elsewhere..

Gold is a global commodity with a value equal everywhere (unless taxed on purchase)..

Gold jewellery, on the other hand, is cheaper in Thailand than here in Australia- the workmanship costs being vastly lower.

Or, should I say, the jewellery costs about as much but is vastly more than 9 carat.

  14. I completely agree.  A couple of weeks ago I met a guy who told me he would never live in Thailand permanently because the health system was so much better back home.

He's from the UK.  Britain has the dirtiest hospitals in eurpoe.  People are dropping dead all over the place from MRSA.

In Thailand can you go to a private hospital see a doctor with 5 minutes notice and be out within half an hour - all for less than 500 baht.

You're lucky if you can see a doctor half an hour after your appointment time in the UK.

And the health system is inferior how?

Dropping dead from MRSA and of course the latest superbug which is even more lethal to patients of a frail disposition.

To see a doctor first of all you have to get an appointment which cannot be booked more than 48 hours in advance. A wonderful system that means you are told to call back tomorrow when they have no slots available. Secondly if you have to have an X Ray, for example, it takes over a week to get the result and about 4 days for a blood test.

Motorways we do not build them anymore just concrete over more and more of the overcrowded South East of England for houses. By the time they complete building all the new houses that two Jags Prescotts unelected SERA has planned it will make the rush hour in BKK look as crowded as the OZ outback.

Well, which system I prefer really depends on how much money I have. As a relatively lowly-paid worker here in Australia, I earn about 450baht/hr. As such, when I visit Thailand, a 500baht cost to visit a doctor and get medicine is pretty trivial.

If, however, I were to be one of my step-uncles, who earn 250baht/day... they might find that 500baht fee just a little more difficult.

  15. I don't take hormonal contraception just because of the emotional roller coaster.  And because I'm convinced it works my making me never in the mood for sex.

Any partner who complains I explain that there's condoms or no interest :D  Usually deal with it pretty fast :o

Heh, I saw this post and didn't remember posting it. Instantly felt less alone :D

  16. Soi Bangla bars as far east as sea dragon were gutted, anything on the beach road was gutted.  Still no electric on the beach road because of downed poles.  There are some bars that have been open since day one and they seem to be doing business.

    New years eve celebrations cancelled.

Still findng bodies and am sure it will hit 3,000 plus.

Great idea to spend money BUT better idea to find a shop owner and give it direct to him.  WHY give money to a bar owner or shop that is oipen and has added 30% or more to his prices  ( which they have done here in kamala).  Just walk along the beach roads and you'll find people that need your help.

If you want compainship, plenty of ladies without jobs now.

Yeah, get your money and help in there- whether it is by donating to an aid organisation, going there and buying stuff or employing people.

It's all good for the area.

  17. This is more idle wondering at this stage, but if you get to live in Thailand on a work permit, you're required to earn a certain amount in a year. If I were to get married, get pregnant and have a child, would I still need to earn that amount or are there other options to explore? I'd really not want to have to work full time at the very least the year I give birth :o

    Thanks!
