  1. Americans are welcome in Cambodia. you even get US dollars from the ATM machines.

i have several friends who have moved to Sihanoukville from Thailand. it's kind of like Pattaya 50 years ago.

as mentioned earlier the business visa is your best bet- actually your only bet for staying longer than 30 days.

you must get the business visa on arrival. business visa - 30 days, $25. the extension costs $250 and is good for one year. you can get it at the embassy. easier - the many travel agencies will get it for you for a small fee.

there are no requirements that i know of. i.e. no income or marriage requirements.

    have fun.

  2. where are u from? in the US that's about 2000 USD, a paupers wage. you can make that working at McDonalds! it's not much above the poverty level. it's what old folks get from social security!!

it's the minimum monthly income necessary to qualify for retirement visa in Thailand.

in the silicon valley - u would be paid at least 4 - 5 times that much! though ur living expenses would be considerably higher.

i guess it would be fun to live in Thailand for a while, but it's not the place to get rich - or plan for ur eventual retirement.

but quite enough to live comfortably anywhere in Thailand.

  3. Slightly easier, but marriage extension is still easy and needs less finances.

    1. Extension based on retirement ------ Requires minimal paperwork and no photo's! The extension is provided on the basis of a local immigration decision and granted on the same day it is applied for . Just one trip to immigration !

    2. Extension based on marriage .......... significant paperwork + photo's. Not a local decision . Two visits to immigration mandated by a 30 day "under consideration " period.

I will stick with the retirement option despite being married to a Thai.

    me too!

  4. if you really want to teach english, but don't want to get a degree, try the neighboring countries that do not require a degree and some pay more than Thailand.

i have a friend without a degree who taught here for several years, but was finally forced out after skipping around and taking less and less money, who went to work in Cambodia. he tells me he is making more money and nobody cares about a degree. this will surely change in the future, as it has in Thailand.

if it's only Thailand you are interested teaching in, than i recommend you take the wise advice of other posters on this forum.

  5. i use AIS 3G air card, 21Mbps - that's 21 mega bits (not bytes) per second. we live 20 kms from the nearest town. it works great, and u can use it anywhere AIS has service in Thailand...

i paid 1000 baht for the air card (dongle)(flash drive), and signed up for the 12 Gigabytes per month (promotion - normally 8GB), 799 baht/month (it's actually unlimited, but after 12 gigs it slows down, but i've never used 12 GBs (or even 8), so i don't know how much it slows down after using ur quota).

anyway, it's quite fast, although at first i wasn't sure it would be enough Gigs, as i like to stream live video and TV shows, etc. from the US. but unless ur on 24 hours a day, it is more than sufficient.

i'm also pretty sure all companies (DTAC, True) have this, or something similar. it just depends on which signal is better in ur location.

    good luck choosing.

  6. Flaunting wealth is the national past time. It's all about how many Mercedes Benzes you have. My inlaws are extremely proud of all three of their Benzes, even though they're all around 30 years old, emit a foul stench and have various internal parts (glove box, sun visors, etc) being held together with duct tape. I bought a suzuki swift last year which they turned up their nose at, but now they admit it's nice to have a car where you don't need to get out and push every so often.

wait until you get to the first hill

  7. I love it when they point the finger, its him, her and the cop standing behind but they still have to point or else the averidge Thai will have no idea whats going on. They even make her point to the money.

Hes 56! I would have to be buried up to my neck in the Desert for 2 years and I would still be better looking than that.

He may look about 80, but at least, he is not overweight, no facial hair, and no visual tattoos.

    no teeth either !!!
