  1. American resident jumps to his death from a Jomtien condo

PATTAYA: -- Police were called to a grisly scene at the Jomtien Plaza condo shortly after 2 a.m. on December 23. Robert George Weisser, 59, had jumped to his death from his 23rd floor apartment.

Initial examinations showed that Weisser had also tried to hang himself. Officers proceeded to the man’s apartment, calling for condo security to use a spare key to open the door.

The inspection showed no signs of struggle and police found a suicide note and the man’s passport.

Shortly thereafter, Weissman’s girlfriend arrived at the condo. Thongbai Somimmadun, 35, told police that she knew Robert was ill and that he was facing financial difficulties, but could not give further details, as she did not know. Thongbai said she was out of the apartment when the incident occurred.

Police sent Robert Weisser’s body to the forensic institute for further examination. They are treating the event as a suicide and have informed US embassy officials.

    American Leaves Suicide Note

24th December: Dead farang found at Jomtien Plaza Condo Hotel

At 2 AM on December 23, Police Major Taelirt Lerper, Investigations Inspector at the Pattaya Police Station, received a report about a dead farang at the Jomtien Plaza Condo Hotel.

When the police and Sawang Boriboon volunteers arrived at the hotel, they found the dead body of a 59-year old American named Mr. Robert George Weisser. His bloody corpse was on a landing on the fifth floor of the condo. He lived on the 23 floor and had a nurse, khun Tawngbai Sominmatdan, 35 who took care of him. He had apparently jumped the 18 floors.

Khun Tawngbai told the police that Mr. Robert had a brain tumor and was in a great deal of pain. At 7 PM, khun Tawngbai said she saw Mr. Robert writing a letter, after which she had gone home.

In his room, the police found a handwritten letter in pencil that said in part: "I am dieing from the drugs and vodka I took but still I want to go off for the thrill. Mail for me its to tell them see what evil didn’t do. I loved all my life. It was wonderful except I cannot take the pain anymore. Papa Hemmingway."

The Sawang Boriboon picked up the body and the authorities have notified the American embassy in Bangkok.

  2. Mystery of missing Swedish tsunami boy deepens

    05/01/2005 - 11:44:00 AM

The mystery surrounding the disappearance of a 12-year-old Swedish tsunami deepened today when a German was cleared of any suspicion of abduction and officials said the boy had not treated at any Thai hospital.

A child matching the description of Kristian Walker was seen leaving Taimuang hospital, in devastated Phang Nga province, a day after the tsunami struck. He was last seen with an unidentified foreign man leaving the hospital.

But police said today that the man, German Stephan Kaley, has been cleared after questioning. Sergeant Vichai Boonruen said police had confirmed Kaley’s account that he helped reunite two German boys with their parents and a Swedish youth with his mother.

“We have ruled out the theory that this man kidnapped anyone,” Vichai said.

Vichai Thienthavorn, permanent secretary of the Public Health Ministry, said that Kristian never showed up in Taimuang or any other hospital in Thailand.

“The reports about the disappearance of the boy might have resulted from a misunderstanding,” he said. “We have make thorough checks of the records, and no such name arrived at any hospital,” Vichai said.

Kristian and his mother have been missing since the tsunami hit Thailand. His grandfather, American Daniel Walker, had been going around with photos of Kristian, and doctors at Taimuang hospital in badly hit Phang Nga province said they had seen a boy who looked like him come in for treatment for water in his ears.

Kristian had been on holiday with his mother Madeleine, who is still missing, along with bother David, 14, and sister Anna, seven, who were found and are back home in Sweden.

Two Swedish police officers have been assisting in the investigation.

In the wake of the devastating tsunami, there have been unconfirmed reports of dozens of orphaned children being taken by unidentified people, some of them possibly child traffickers.

German cleared in hunt for missing tsunami boy

    05/01/2005 - 10:06:27 AM

A German man sought following the disappearance of a 12-year-old Swedish tsunami victim in Thailand has been cleared after being interviewed by police.

A child matching the description of the Swedish boy went missing from a hospital in southern Thailand a day after the tsunami struck.

His family fears he may have been kidnapped after being last seen with an unidentified foreign man leaving the hospital.

German Stephan Kaley went to a police station after hearing reports that a boy matching the description of 12-year-old Kristian Walker may have been snatched from a hospital, police Sergeant Vichai Boonruen said.

Vichai said police had confirmed Kaley’s account that he helped reunite two German boys with their parents and a Swedish youth with his mother.

“We have ruled out the theory that this man kidnapped anyone,” Vichai said.

Lieutenant Colonel Preecha Klaewthanong, chief investigator of the case, said Kaley lives not far from the hospital and apparently had been helping out during the tragedy.

“He gave us full cooperation to clear up all the confusion, so we have no right to charge or detain him,” Preecha said.

  7. Body of first Irish tsunami victim found

    04/01/2005 - 10:11:41 PM

The body of the first Irish victim of the Asian tsunami was found in Thailand today.

Eilis Finnegan, a 27-year-old former flight attendant from Ballyfermot, Dublin was on holiday with her boyfriend on Phi Phi island.

She had been missing since the tsunami hit the holiday resort.

A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed her body had been found. It is to issue a statement on behalf of her family.

Ms Finnegan's boyfriend, Barry Murphy, had said his last memory of her was a joyful one of laughing and joking near the beach on Phi Phi.

Both had been running from the waves when he picked up a boy of about four to save him. Ms Finnegan had been running ahead before he went under.

“I went around shouting Eilis’s name, calling her. As I did other people popped up, crying, looking for help and their friends,” he said.

Mr Murphy spent the following nine days searching for her body in Thailand.

In their statement, Ms Finnegan’s family expressed their sincerest appreciation for his efforts.

“Thanks to Barry for his tireless efforts to reunite Eilis with us. We would also like to thank Barry’s family for all their tremendous efforts and support.”

The family also thanked the gardaํ, the Department of Foreign Affairs, and the Irish ambassador to Thailand and asked for their privacy to be respected.

Foreign Affairs Minister Dermot Ahern expressed deep sadness at the positive identification of Ms Finnegan’s remains in Krabi, Thailand.

“I want to extend, on my own behalf and that of the Government, my most sincere condolences to Eilis’s family and to her boyfriend, Barry Murphy,” he said.

“This announcement brings an end to a terrible period of uncertainty and worry for the Finnegans and for Eilis’s many close friends.

“As they come to terms with their tragic loss, I would appeal for them to be allowed to grieve in peace and in privacy.”

He added that the Department of Foreign Affairs and Irish Embassy staff in Thailand would continue to extend all possible assistance to the family.

There are three other Irish people missing and feared dead since the tsunami. Another 17 Irish people reported missing are considered to be “medium risk” cases by the Department of Foreign Affairs.

The Government has donated €10m so far to relief efforts in the Asian countries affected by the tsunami.

  10. Lookingforthaiwife,

If you are serious, I have the "perfect" lady for you.

She is a Hairdresser in Pattaya.

She was once engaged but he died and she has not been with anyone else since.

I know because her friends (one of which is my wife) tease her about being a female monk.

I can vouch for her being a lovely, generous and funny lady.

She is 33 years old and very beautiful.

Lookingforthaiwife: That is an offer that you cannot refuse... as the Godfather said.

Seriously... Tak McAttack up on his offer. I have been around the block a LOT and would jump at this chance from somebody who knows the lady. If I was not married already to a Thai lady, I'd jump at this offer... with both feet!

Mr McAttack's 1 and only post.

  11. One of my dogs is nameless. I am trying to think of a good name before my wife gives it one I don't like like my older dog's name, "gaw gae".

Anyone got ideas? Any witty one?

A play on Thai words maybe.

I thought about "long daeng"! which rhymes with "thong daeng" His Majesty's famous hound. "Long daeng" is what happens when you come off drugs or alcohol. Maybe my warped sense of humour, but I thought it might be funny shouting this down the soi.

  12. Tsunami donation email scam

    From correspondents in Hong Kong

    January 3, 2005

EMAILS falsely asking for donations for victims of last week's killer tsunami are doing the rounds in Hong Kong.

Police and charity workers said today the fraudulent messages claims to be from Oxfam and urges donors to deposit money into a bank account in Cyprus, they said.

It was not known whether anybody had been fooled by them, a police spokeswoman said.

Oxfam is among a number of worldwide relief agencies mobilising tsunami aid.

More than 144,000 people were killed in Indian Ocean coastal areas in 11 countries.

Oxfam Hong Kong spokeswoman Christy Ko said the emails were a sick attempt to extort money from people at a time of tragedy.

However, she did not believe they would harm the agency's campaign to raise funds for relief efforts.

"It was a very badly put together email, I don't think many people would have been fooled," she said.

Hong Kong is being increasingly targeted by on-line fraudsters, particularly those claiming to be from banks and urging customers to hand over personal account details.

  14. The missus and me use Telesavers all the time to call the family and friends in Thailand. Nine times out of ten it will connect first time and is very good quality. Checked my bill, NTL, the first month we used it and yes it is 1ppm, amazing value, even to Thai mobiles!

When we first heard about Telesavers months ago we had the same 'capacity...' massage problem but never since then, strange.

Telesavers is 08448615615. I have another 1ppm number 08448611212, not sure who they are, may even be another Telesavers access number but it works fine too.
