  1. .... it is the principle, isn't it?

It certainly is! How about this for a scam...

I filled up the pick-up at a filling station on the way to Krabi. The girl stopped pumping at 678 baht. I thought it was a funny amount to stop at, normally they go to the nearest 10 baht. As usual I asked for a receipt. I had to wait ages for the receipt and change from a 1,000 baht note. My g/f went to the shop while I was waiting. I waited at least 5 minutes and sat in the car listening to my CD.

When another car pulled up at the other side of the pump, the girl came with my change and receipt. I noticed straight away it was wrong - she gave me change for 780 baht, not 678 baht. So I said it was wrong, and pointed at the meter and before I could stop her she went over to the pump, lifted the handle to reset the meter to zero and then came back and asked what was wrong. ****ing clever! I had no evidence of how much she'd actually pumped so I told her what I thought of her and left.

Must admit it was an excellent scam - especially waiting until another car wanted to use the same pump so she could "legitimately" reset it to zero.

  2. Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has pledged an investigation to find out why early warnings were not issued ahead of Sunday's deadly tsunami.

Thailand's death toll currently stands at 4,812, with just over half of the dead being foreign tourists, but Mr Thaksin warned it could reach 8,000.

Specialist DNA forensic teams from at least 12 states have now arrived in Thailand to help identify the dead.

But they are warning it could be a long and distressing process.

"There must be an investigation of the whole incident, how it happened, when it happened and why early warnings could not have been issued," Mr Thaksin said in his weekly radio address on Saturday.

We are looking for any news of a friend who is holidaying in Thailand with his 17yr old daughter and 7 year old son. His name is Kevin McDonell and he is 36 years old

    Peter Hampson, Rye, UK

Mr Thaksin's remarks follow allegations made by an unnamed member of the Thai meteorological department this week that a tsunami alert was not issued for fear of hurting the country's important tourism industry in case it turned out to be a false alarm.

None of the countries affected by the tsunami issued a warning.

Mr Thaksin said he had appointed a quake and tsunami expert, Samith Dhammasaroj, to establish an early warning system for all natural disasters.

"Some might say we are putting up fences after the cows have gone," he said. "But there are still some cows left and there will be more cows coming and we need to have a strong fence," he said.

The BBC's Dominic Hughes, on the Thai island of Phuket, says that in some places the devastation has been complete - remote coastal fishing villages have been entirely wiped out.

    Identification process

Meanwhile, the struggle to identify the dead continues. Our correspondent says so far the bodies of around 250 foreigners have been positively identified - just one in 10 of the total known to have died so far.

But it could be weeks if not months before all those killed in Thailand by last Sunday's tsunami are identified, rescue teams in the country have said.

The death toll is now more than 4,800, with another 6,000 missing.

It is now virtually impossible to identify the bodies by sight, so forensic experts are trying to use dental records, or match DNA samples provided by relatives of the missing.

But the bodies of the Thai victims - most of them Buddhists - have started to be cremated.

The traditional mourning rituals have been abandoned, with dozens of bodies being burnt together to reduce the risk of disease.

Across the country, New Year's celebrations were cancelled or toned down. In Phuket, hundreds of tourists left bars at midnight to join locals in spontaneous candle-lighting in the streets, the French news agency AFP reported.

At the same time, a huge clear-up operation is removing the rubble of collapsed buildings in Thailand's top tourism spots.

The country relies on tourism, and businesses are trying to revive the industry as soon as possible, our correspondent says.

  5. We are a US corp established in the USA, Europe and Japan. We are planning to start up operations in Thailand early in 2005.

We are seeking either a Thai company already operating in the MLM area, which we can buy into,  or a Thai national who is an expert in the field who can help us establish a start up company.

We are the producer, manufacturer and distributor of our products.

This is an ideal opportunity for a company that is struggling to satnd apart form the rest due to high cost 'me to' products purchased overseas, or for an expert who has the knowledge and downline available.

Food From Italy announces it’s new Web site at

    www.foodfromitaly.co.uk

Paul Geoghegan owner of the new site said

‘We are proud to be able to announce the opening of the best site on the Web for fine Italian food items.

We are starting with Parmesan cheese from the best small independent producers. Pamigiano-Reggiano is hand made and aged in accordance with official decrees, little changed in more than seven centuries.

It is this commitment to tradition that allows us to enjoy the true original Parmesan masterpiece that is Parmigiano-Reggiano’.

    Geoghegan explained,

‘The cheese that we supply has been aged for 18 months, which is the optimum time for flavour to develop in the cheese.

As with any masterpiece, Parmigiano-Reggiano feature a distinctive signature: each cheese is stencilled with the name in a vertical pattern around the rind’.

New items will be added in the near future such as the very finest Extra Virgin Olive oil.

In all cases the cost of our foods will be significantly lower than UK supermarket prices.

  8. The prime minister's wife Khunying Potjaman Shinawatra yesterday volunteered to help with forensic work in the South to give her husband time to rest.

She travelled to Phangngna to help forensic expert Khunying Pornthip Rojanasunan identify dead victims of the tsunami disaster.

Prime Minister Thaksin said he was surprised by his wife's offer. She and her aides left Bangkok at 10.30am for Phangnga, before moving on to Phuket. He would visit the South again today.

On Thursday his daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra went to work as a volunteer translator at Thammasat University, Rangsit, but few foreigners remained. So she signed a waiting list and helped pack donated items instead.

''I then asked her to accompany me to the South, and she agreed. Our family will work together,'' Mr Thaksin said.

His wife, who was afraid of ghosts when she was young, said she was not afraid to work among thousands of corpses. So he asked her to support Khunying Pornthip and Public Health Minister Sudarat Keyuraphan.

Thailand, he said, had accepted offers from overseas of equipment and personnel but rejected financial help which should go to poorer countries.

His government would decide how to help bereaved families, villagers who lost their homes, and process the decomposing corpses more rapidly.

Mr Thaksin denied reports that US President George W Bush would send US Secretary of State Colin Powell to Thailand to find ways to help tsunami victims.

However, he said Mr Bush and the UN secretary-general offered to form a core group of affected countries and donors.

''I have no problem [with that] and we will join when Indonesia hosts a meeting next month,'' he said.
