  1. My impression is that it's very common for women to do this in conversation, especially if they're speaking with anyone who isn't a close friend or family. Now with males (outside of the soaps) - have heard it a handful of times, kinda rare, but does occur.

For consistency, I always refer to myself simply as the king of all falang.

  2. In Los Angeles I knew several folks that traveled to a destination in Asia at any opportunity, along with a few friends teaching in Japan and Korea. Eventually they influenced me. In the Midwest where I spent a big chunk of adolescence I knew exactly none that had been to anywhere in Asia.

Definitely not an America hater - appreciate what it has to offer and I love the republic of California. :)

That said - a lot of the criticism pointed at the US is well deserved. Most Americans are notoriously ignorant of world geography and wouldn't be able to identify SE Asia on a simple map. And don't even think about discussing Int'l affairs if it doesn't revolve around the US (usually terrorism). This IS rather dull. Hopefully not permanent.

Brits/Europeans show a hell of a lot more 'global sophistication' or whatever u want to call it

Too bad their (Brit) food does suck.

  3. Or maybe they are just responding to some of the crap written on TV, and without slang old chap a language would never develop....further I believe you are getting insults and sarcasm mixed up..There are a lot of sarcastic/dry sense of humour posters on TV

Great sarcasm, biting wit is a great British tradition al la Oscar Wilde and simlilar...in the modern day this tradition has been carried on by the likes of Jezze Clarkson....

    Yeah right

Sorry the British gay bashing brigade we have here? Making reference to Oscar Wilde? cheesy.gif

What gay bashing brigade... Please direct me to any content....whether Oscar Wilde was gay or not has absolutely no relevance to his literary output and his biting wit...

Brit wit can be a beautiful thing. And Oscar Wilde is the bad mutha-f*cka of all Brit wit. He is an interesting example to use in this particular thread though. I don't know the story rote, but if memory serves from the uni classes a few moons ago, he did die penniless and depressed - having been convicted of being Gay, then jailed and exiled from Victorian England and treated as a social pariah afterwards. OK that's a gross simplification, but is the general gist.

Not to endorse speech control. I don't, and don't believe Wilde would either. But people can be frail things and have weak points, much as we may delude ourselves. OTOH, you do need to be thick-skinned to get through life intact, and speech controls are hardly the answer to <deleted>. And there's a little asshol_e in all of us.

    So what's the point?

    I forgot.

  4. Sure, the owner is an ass. Sure, it's a stupid move on his part, in a mall that is popular with foreigners.

So what? Who is he or she hurting except for himself and his business, particularly when the very next booth sells the very same crap and he will lose out?

What do you want to do? Complain to the Human Rights Commission?

Better still, why not picket the shop and persuade all the foreigners not to shop there?

Forgive any typos or logical inconsistencies, I interrupted a furious letter writing session to Project Hope Thailand, The Buddha Dhamma Foundation, and Amnesty International ---> in order to retort.

I agree with what you say. I just got a chuckle out of the attack dogs letting loose on those calling this guy out for his sign. Talk about drama queens. I mean we have guys writing PhD dissertation length posts extolling the critics not to get their panties in a twist. So who is generating the more fuss? And why?

Thailand expats are always an interesting group. There's a lot of loathing and always a struggle for fellas to outdo each other in condemning the other 'farang.' The backpackers, the old guys, the pattaya guys, the russians, the soccer hooligans, the sexpats, the tourists, the non-thai language learners, the too-much-thai language learners. And so forth.

And that's what this thread is about for some folks under the guise of critiquing political correctness. Just a way to get in a dig at the others. In this case politically correct strawmen that don't exist.

I'm just sad I'm out of the country right now and might not make it back in time for the photo op.

btw - I like reading your posts Bendix. You're kinda an anti-social, social person. smile.png

    Cheers.

  5. You're not in London now Dorothy; this kind of politically incorrect stuff is what makes me love Thailand, not the other way round.

Politically correct... blah blah blah. Politically correct... blah blah blah. You know that there is a genuine political correctness permeating Western culture that is rather repulsive at times. But when you fellas have to chuck it out every other sentence regardless of legitimacy to make a pointless point. It kinda... ya know... kills the potency of the idea.

Man posts a Farang not welcome sign on his store in one of the most popular malls in BKK. A couple guys criticize this. Next thing you know, the onslaught of "Lets stop this political correctness" begins. F'n really? This is your political correctness?

And the irony is, the owner is still an ass. Is any criticism of the place you love ok? Or is it all a trojan horse for the ubiquitous political correctness lurking in the shadows?

  6. Then they should have a minimum cover charge that covers a certain amount of drinks

This Thread is quickly becoming boring, How many different ways can we make the same point?

I don't think it's an indicator of a major cultural shift or the beginning of an apartheid era in LoS, but it is stupid and obnoxious. For a store owner in MBK to put a subtle 'fuc_k you farang' (lets be honest, that's what it is) does demonstrate that the owner is an ass, and I have no problem with you pointing that out siri. For the fellas criticizing you and talking about political correctness... puh-leaze.

I get the sensation that if the bar owners in cowboy made a determination that they preferred Japanese customers and put up a collective "no Farangs allowed" on the Soi, these gents would be the first to scream bloody murder.

    I know I would. tongue.png

  7. It's not new agey it's a thousand year old concept and quite true. And if you had actually been there and done that and then tried the reverse you would not have the same attitude. Nice brings nice and anger brings more anger like it or not thats the way of the world. Like I have stated none of this kind of nonsense EVER comes my way because the world I create around me is a world in which it would make no sense to the people entering it to act that way.

Very impressive attaining that level of omnipotence. Where were you a couple years ago when Bangkok burned and factions battled it out in the street. We could've just had you walk the sois bringing peace and sublime tranquility to the unwashed masses.

I've heard of rose tinted glasses before, but chumley, you've locked yourself away in a rose tinted vacuum chamber. Though I suppose if you're going to indulge in illusions, one could do worse.

  8. I'm usually against mobs like these but in this case, good show Yellow Shirts!

    Not keen on democracy then?

Ahhh democracy, you mean like the ethnic cleansing of the Bosnian Croats in (what was) Yugoslavia. I mean, the Serbs were the clear majority and they wanted those Croatians gone, and who can argue against democracy... right?

Mob rules, ain't it wonderful. Cheers to the highbrow Western ideals.

  9. Reminds me of this little fairy tale; most have likely heard it before but still worth posting in the context of this most entertaining thread:

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'

    The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and went fishing and hunting and played golf a lot and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

    The end

Marry, and you will eventually regret it.

Do not marry, and you will also eventually regret this.

Marry, or do not marry. You will regret it either way. That about sums up the pickle we find ourselves in. wai.gif

  10. I hope my neighbors don't mind the smell.

Lesson #1, a true Kimchi aficionado will always own a small (or large) second fridge or storage container. Either that, or I hope you don't store anything else in the same place where the kimchi is going. Especially dairy products. Ever had milk tainted with kimchi odor? It WILL get into everything.

But yeah, it's good to have. :)
