That sounds like a nightmare scenario.. one which I will try my best to avoid 😄

That would be the sensible option, but IMO the six month rule is only for going to a different country as a Briton should  be allowed to return to Britain, even with an expired passport.

However, if the flight stopped in a country on the way to Britain that might be a problem.

Hi thaibeachlovers, thanks for your reply. You make a very point here, one which I hadn't taken into consideration. Thank you

Yes, he should clear Thai Immigration using his Thai Passport, but check in using his expired UK Passport which shows he doesn’t need a visa.

He is a UK National so is not subject to Immigration control and has an unfettered right of entry, whatever the validity of his passport, even if expired.

He could renew his passport in the UK  in the if he has time.

He should show his Thai Passport when checking in for his return flight, to negate the need for a return ticket, there are no Embarkation Controls when leaving the UK, that role is carried out by the carrier.

Thank you for your reply theoldgit, I am very grateful of the advice on here regarding this. I will renew his passport in the UK for sure as he will be staying for a long time 👍

  3. Hello everyone,

I have tried to Google this and I know about the six month passport validity rule for travelling TO another country, say for a holiday, but I can't tell for sure if it applies to travelling back home.

I'm looking at booking a flight for my son (with his Thai mum) to travel home to UK in early April but his UK passport expiry date is April 21st.

As he's travelling home to England and staying in England, does anyone know if this will be an issue?

    Thanks everyone for any input.

    That kind of changes things,

Take it to the shop change oil, get them to check it out,

( if that possible here) tell them what happened.

Take it to a field ( for soft landing ) put helmet on, long pants, gloves.

jacket and abuse it, (big style) , at low speed stamping on the gears. up down through the gear box, waking the throttle wide open as you change gears. if it works ok, then just use it.

I know you have tried this but get rough with it,  this time.

sorry it's all I can suggest. :jap:

or sell it,  but could be, not so nice for who ever buys it.

Thanks Orinoco, had the oil changed and the bike checked over yesterday, also the shop guy said he could not fault the bike so I will just have to accept that I made a mess of changing gear on that occasion ????

One thing for sure now is that when I'm waiting at traffic lights, I make sure I am way to the side and not in front of any other bikes or cars.. paranoid of it happening again ????

at least let them  check it out. ( if that is possible here )

I'm surprised , what happened as its a new bike.

    Hope it never happens again.

    Good luck. :jap:

Ps On seconds thoughts, all parts are new as its a new bike.

it could be a one off as things bed in.

change the oil straight away, like  now.

possible, some  contaminant is in the engine from manufacture,

( or other things after it left the factory ) all unlikely

but it's very cheap to change oil.

what a dilemma for you,on a new bike . :saai:

Hi Orinoco, thanks for your reply! ???? Sorry I should have been clearer, the bike is about a year old  but was bought brand new by my missus ????

That being said, I reckon is it actually due for an oil change any way so I'll take it in tomorrow and get them to have a look over it at the same time ???? thanks for your input ????????

Dirt is a more likely cause.

91 and 95 octanes nowadays contain appreciable amounts of ethanol. With water, the binary combination of hydrocarbon and ethanol forms a ternary mixture in a single liquid phase, so the fuel is able to tolerate some water without affecting performance.

All bets are off if the water present exceeds the limits of miscibility, as a couple of unscrupulous sellers have found out, when they added water to their stock of gasoline to increase their profit. That's far more likely to happen at village pumps than at volume highway stations, though.

    Thanks Lacessit ????????

Its a semi-auto... so if a higher gear is selected too early the auto-clutch engages preventing the stall.

In this case it seems the auto-clutch didn’t engage properly, not only resulting in a stall, but the gear engaged and locked up the rear-wheel - just like applying the rear brake full on !!!...   Quite dangerous and should definitely not happen.

Thus: the fuel suggestion is a valid one (check the fuel filter)...  The recommendation to go to a quiet area and re-create the issue is also a good idea.

There could be an issue with the auto-clutch itself.

Hi Richard, thanks a lot for your input. I will have the bike checked out for sure and the fuel filter etc and up to now I haven't been able to re-produce what happened but I will keep trying in my apartment car park every morning ????????

If the rear wheel locked up to the extent the OP states, it probably wasn't a stall.  A stall results in normal deceleration, even on a semi-auto.

OP - it's probable that your transmission locked up because the gears didn't mesh correctly at the shift. Difficult to achieve, but can be done. Particularly if you did a slow stab of the pedal and the shift is made too early.

Hi Gsxrnz, thanks for your reply ???? Good to hear that it can be done, like I said I feel I shifted too early and it just took my by surprise the way it just stopped so suddenly ????‍♂️

IF it stalls in gear, there is no power to drive the engine... the engine doesn't 'free-wheel' at low speeds, it just locks - thats why we can’t push a bike which is in gear (on or off).

As others have pointed out, it would be helpful to know what sort of bike this is.

At the moment I’m guessing its something like a 15 year old Honda Click....   I don't know if semi-automatic scooters are still sold.

Of course an underlying problem with dirty/inferior fuel is possible.

I had problems with the motor stall just after starting and trying to get off.

In the end the fuel pump had to be replaced.

Was clogged with some dirt or so (mechanic showed me).

    Wasn't too cheap, 1800.

From the OP it sounds like a problem with fuel supply.

This is also sounding like good advice, I've been transfixed on the idea that I somehow stalled the bike with my own doing but in the case of a fuel supply issue it could cause this to happen ????

  8. 11 minutes ago, Peterw42 said:

OP, it may well have been a bit of dirt/water in fuel. Have you been filling up from the 30 baht Hong thong bottles lately ?

Water in fuel can be deceptive as when you are just pottering around you don't notice it, but when you rapidly open the throttle it has a dramatic effect.

Hi Peter, thanks for your reply, I only ever fill up at PTT stations but good suggestion and something I was not aware of ????????

    9 minutes ago, Lacessit said:

It's possible to stall most vehicles, two or four wheel, if too high a gear is selected when starting from a standstill.

I would suggest taking the scooter to a traffic-free area, and testing it in higher gears to see if the fault can be replicated.

One possible cause in older scooters is the accelerator cable is sticking, so there are not enough revs to get moving. Have the bike checked by a competent mechanic.

Thanks Lacessit, good idea to try and recreate the problem, just would love to understand exactly what happened so I can make sure I don't do it again ????

Re the accelerator cable, the bike is less than a year but I will have it checked out regardless, thanks again ????????

  9. Hi everyone,

I have been living in Thailand for just over 3 months now and have got myself a Yamaha Finn 115i semi-automatic motorcycle.

I've been using this motorcycle trouble free for well over 6 weeks now but this morning something happened which really but the frighteners up me.

I was stopped at a red light waiting to turn right, lots of other motorcycles and cars behind me etc, light turns green and I'm already in 1st and pull away, I selected 2nd gear after just taking off and suddenly my motorcycle came to a dead stop, throwing me forward like as though I had stalled it and the motorcycle behind rammed straight into my number plate and rear lights ???? number plate all bent and lights pushed up but nothing major.

Luckily he was ok and so was I but it's really knocked my confidence and I am trying to understand what happened - maybe some of you more experienced riders can help?

I feel as though I might have selected 2nd gear a bit too early after the lights turned green but I was told that these semi-automatic motorcycles can't stall, as you can leave them in any gear with the engine running etc. So what on earth did I do wrong this morning?? ????‍♂️

I keep thinking how lucky that it wasn't a big car or a coach that rammed into me, man I would've been flattened ????

    Thanks in advance

That's literally the worst advice anyone could give? Have you seen what happened to Israeli man and Indian couple who did just that? Or do you really want her in jail and emptying your pockets on all the fines she'd be facing?

She is positive. Nobody cares what she had or didn't have before. Thai rules are clear - she's quarantined until her negative result. She's actually lucky they didn't stick her into a private hospital's COVID ward which would have increased costs tremendously. There are many foreign tourists in hotel quarantine or hospitals, who tested negative before departure but positive on arrival. Are you aware there are many mutations of COVID and that recovering from one doesn't necessarily make you immune to others?

It was truly stupid idea to travel during these times, but now that she's already done that, take it as lesson and don't make things worse.

Did you not read my last post ????

She didn't take my advice anyway as she is smarter than me ????‍♂️

  11. Hello,

My wife (Thai) travelled to Thailand on her own on January 3rd under the Test & Go scheme. She had Covid a couple of weeks before she left the UK but was able to produce a negative PCR test before her flight, along with a doctors letter of proof of recovery from Covid-19.

Thinking everything would be fine, surprise surprise the Thai RT-PCR test has come back Positive. (That was on the 4th Jan)

    She is currently stuck in the Test & Go hotel (Sinsuvarn Airport Suite) despite showing the staff all her documents;

Double vaccine certificates and also had the booster

    Pre departure NEGATIVE RT-PCR test

    Letter of isolation period completed

Medical assessment letter of Covid-19 recovery and no symptoms etc etc

The hotel are saying she has to stay in the hotel another 1-2 nights while they check her covid again but I feel they are just taking advantage of her.

I've told her to just leave and if they call the police then so what as she has all proof she needs etc, but she is too worried to do that.

Is there any number she can call and ask for advice or can anyone here offer any advice I could pass back to her? Surely the hotel have no right to make her stay there any longer??

I advised against travelling to Thailand now but she needs to see her grandad who is very old and frail and not in good health.

Thanks if anyone can offer any advice

  12. Hi MollyGP,

Are the email addresses you're using @outlook.com by any chance?

I tried multiple @outlook.com accounts but they all did the same thing, so I then tried my dad's @blueyonder.co.uk email address and it worked first time.

I think it might have something to do with a feature of Outlook called 'Safe links', where links sent in email addresses are modified to stop malware and ransomware. However I disabled that feature and tried again but the same result when clicking the 'verify account' link.

Have you got another email provider you could try?

  13. Well listen to this then, my wife (Thai) can no longer use her Bangkok Bank ATM card since we returned to Thailand. Apparently they changed the PIN system to 6 digits while we were in England where we live. My wife went to Bangkok Bank branch where the account was originally opened and she was told she would have to report her ATM card missing at the police station in order for them to issue her a new card... unbelievable ????

The flaws in your thinking are obvious...

Your kids are now 9 and 7 according to your post... but you are discussing a situation in between 10 and 20 years in the future, when your kids will be in the age where conscription can happen (normally 21, but anytime between 18 and 29, if i.e. they were out of country when they were 21). At that time, your kids would be on their own, need their own visas etc.

And in your previous post, you write that you don't even have the money for a UK quarantine... now you want to make us believe, that you kids, once they reach conscription age, still don't need to work? Pretty unbelievable, right?

You better start thinking this situation over again and not take decisions that in 10 years from now are fully the responsibility of your kids. You don`t even know where they will want to live by then...

And btw I am not your buddy.

Swiss1960, you say the flaws are obvious but really they aren't ????

Then in your second paragraph you say "At that time, your kids would be on their own, need their own visas etc". Well according to immigration, that's the status they are now LOL.. They have to have a visa NOW, even as Thai kids with renewed THAI passports. Can't you see how stupid that is?

Then you mention my kids not needing to work, how do you know anything about their situation? For all you know, at age 18 they could be inheriting millions ????

Anyway thanks for your input buddy ????
