  1. You can now play many of your old favories - Kings Quest 1-4, Police Quest 1, Space Quest 1-2, and it seems they're working on Leasure Suit Larry 1 - directly in your browser or on your tablet (or smartphone I suppose, if you have good eyes).

I remember endless nights playing these games - they were the rage in my early IT formative years and will always have a special place in my heart.

It may be old news to some, but I just learned about it today so here it is.

  2. No quite definitely a graphics driver problem of sorts. The command 'dmesg' outputs, among a lot of other things, information about your hardware. It should tell you somewhere what graphics cards is detected. You may want to pipe it through less ('dmesg | less') or into a file that you can then check with an editor ('dmesg > dmesg.txt')

  3. Ok, made the upgrade this morning and everything seemed to have worked. My first major Linux operation without Phil Connors holding my hand, I can say with certain pride... Nothing much seemed to change, except for some squeaking sounds that were not there yesterday. Not fixed is a potential graphics driver problem, the start button on the lower left corner doesn't display and some other funny graphic hiccups here and there. You did better than me. I tried to update my F19 according to their instructions (the automatic route, lazy as I am). It completed without any errors or messages, but was hosed when it came back up after reboot. Fortunately it is so easy to reinstall Linux from scratch, and it's actually not to bad to start over from time to time - I tend to accumulate a lot of junk in the course of testing stuff.

dharmabm has a very good point, Arch Linux is probably the supreme distro, it does however require considerable Linux experience. There are no hand-holding, no wizards, no easy way to install things, everything has do be done "by hand", not recommendable for newbies or lazy people (like me) who prefer just doing a "yum install" of things.

As for your graphics driver problem, if there is a driver for your graphics controller Fedora ought to have found it automatically - and you said the screen worked fine with Ubuntu? If your sure you just didn't notice the problem, there must be a driver available, so I guess Google is your friend ....

  4. Is it a grinding noise or a high pitched squeal? An improperly tensioned belt means the belt can slip causing a squeal and more so when cold as the belt has not softened for a good grip yet. Though I suspect you are already familiar with that sound and cause.

I know what you mean, but it's not fanbelt squal, more like a growl, and only when it's cold. When the engine is hot it's barely heard, in fact my wife had to take the Honda guys for a test drive before they could hear it (or perhaps they couldn't and their whole story was just a face-save maneuver.) I'm unfortunately unable to go with it myself at this time.

The grinding noise is probably a pulley bearing failing.

Edit: Take it to another Honda place or independent. Probably the air con pump bearing is the real problem.

I suspect your mechanic is either an idiot or ripping you off.

I think I will. Anyone know of a good reliable inexpensive independent in the Pattaya area.

Does your engine have a ''timing'' chain or a belt.? I don't know. If the chain tensioner is stuffed it will make a row.

I think it's a belt, you can see it on the picture in the OP.

Looking at the bolt you have highlighted in red doesn't seem to be anything. Do you mean just to the left of the red circle which looks like belt tensioner if that is faulty it will make a noise, easy way to test is have someone take the belt off and wiggle it for any play. as for cost if it's 1,000bt that would be fitted. As your car is 6 years old go to a local garage they will source part from local shop not Honda.

My wife told me they pointed at the nut, but it could have been something to the left.

  5. Belt tensioner sounds likely. No, the car actually is fine, no heating problems. Just one or two months ago the power steering was making an odd noise. First they changed the belt (800 baht) and when that didn't fix the problem, they took the servo apart, changed some gaskets, at ... you guessed it ... 5000 baht. That seems like the standard cost for any smallish engine fix at Honda. Anyway, I digress. Could it simply be that the belt isn't tightened correctly or something like that?

The thing is, it looks like you're snookered in Thailand. The spare parts are sold with work included, so even if you go to another garage, they still have to go to Honda for the parts - which are already priced with Honda's service. In Europe you'd more likely than not use 3rd party spare parts, usually better quality at lower price than the original, does that exist in Thailand?

  6. A few months ago our 2007 Civic started making some grinding engine noise, particularly when cold. Honda fixed it telling us it was one of the rubber engine mounts that needed replacing.

Now the exact same thing happened again, so I took the car to Honda assuming it would be another engine mount, but they told me the mounts were fine, but another dims needed to be changed. They couldn't explain me what it was, but pointed to the nut in the picture. I'm not completely helpless with car engines but I really can't imagine what this thing is for.

Anyone can tell me what it is for, and why it would cause a grinding noise?

Curiously the cost of repair is about the same, around 5,000 baht.

  7. I bought a NookHD+ 9" on eBay for about $100. Rooted it and installed plain Android. Makes for a nice tablet at a bargain price - assuming WiFi only and no camera is OK. Excellent screen. Sent from my BN NookHD+ using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

I think you must have been quite lucky to get a 9" Nook for $100. Checking Ebay now, the only ones I find in that range still have weeks left of the auction.

  8. You and me both, but last update was KeepassX 2 alpha 4 released in spring sometime, so I wouldn't sit up waiting for it. To be honest, I live fine without the 2.0 features, whatever they are, not a big problem for me. The problems I had with Keepass 2 under Mono wasn't just font releated, thought that was one of the issues. There are quite a few gotcha's, try for example to select a couple of keys and move them to a different group, can't do. Overall KeypassX just feels much faster/smoother and native to Linux imo.

  9. +1 for KeePassX on Linux - KeePass 2 if you're on Windows.

It's possible to run KeePass 2 on Linux using Mono but frankly it's so buggy its better to use KeePassX. There are Android versions of either so just pick what you use.

LastPass may be easier to get started with, but (1) they charge for the mobile client and (2) I'm not really comfortable having all my passwords in a known location that I'm sure hackers are doing everything they can to get into (and have in the past been at least partially succesfull). Of course my KeePass data are also on the Internet, dropbox in fact, but I save the file with an obscure extension in a location with many other files, documents and images of low interest, so a hacker wouldn't know off the cuff that it's a password safe, it all just looks like low-interest personal stuff.

  10. I just got a D820 and it worked right away with Truemove-H here in Pattaya. I don't know what it's supposed to show with 4G working, so far all I've seen is the usual E and H icons. Nice enough little phone (after a Note 2), really can't complain considering the low price, $400 (the 32G model) + some 2,000 baht in taxes and shipping costs.

  11. Yes Truemove-H.

I'm currently not in wifi range and when I tried yesterday it started wanting to download a software update over the GSM network. I ticked ok but it never started so I just jumped to the conclusion the phone wasn't compatible with my old sim. Just tried again and this time it went through ok, so all good.

Nice little phone, curiously tiny when you've gotten used to the Note 2 - that my wife will now inherit :)

  12. That's correct, it's the D820. A friend brought me one over. I tried using the TRUEMOVE sim from my Note2 (same size) but it didn't seem to want to connect. Was wondering if I need to get down to TRUE and get a new sim or something. For practical reasons I haven't had the opportunity to do so yet.

  13. Whatever you do, don't buy a knock-off - something that pretends to be a brand name. They generally fail within a week and you will have zero support from the vendor. Personally I'd buy a Google Nexus over the Internet, but Samsung tablets are fine, just very expensive here, I doubt you'll find a current model Galaxy Tab 10" in your price range. Alternatively there's a local i-mobile range that have some reasonable tablets at very reasonably prices,

And as this is more technology-related than Pattaya-related let's move it to the technology forum.

  14. Hi

I am new member on this forum and i happen to be  a medical doctor from the U.S.

I noticed that someone wrote that Type O blood is rare in Thailand .

The prevalence of Type O in Thailand is about 40% ( the highest ) , followed in descending order  by Type B, then Type A

    then last is Type AB.

The reality is that there is an overall shortage of blood supplies in Thailand mainly due to a decrease in donations . I read that many people are under the impression that there is ample supply , which is why , they only donate when they  are urged  by the red cross or other institutions .

There is more need for blood type O , possibly because it is a  very common type ( more need for it ) yet not enough people with blood type O donate .

I wonder if it possible to pre- donate some of your own blood and have it saved for  any future emergency use , like you can back in the U.S. !! this maybe a worthwhile thing to investigate .

0 is indeed very common, but only 0+, 0- is very rare - I saw a figure of .3% among Thai population.

  15. Noise-Canceling Window Treatment Is Everything You Need For A Better Night's Sleep (VIDEO)

    Posted: 10/29/2013 12:40 pm EDT

Urban living has its perks, but rarely (if ever) is noise mentioned among them.

Until now, heavy curtains or pricey soundproof windows have been the best way to keep the blaring-ringing-talking sounds of the city streets out of urban homes, but Austrian industrial designer Rudolf Stefanich has another option in mind.
Stefanich's 'Sono' device sticks onto your window, turning it into a filter for disruptive noises like car horns and construction work. You can even let pleasant sounds like birds chirping in instead, with the turn of a knob.
Genius? We know, and so do the folks over at the UK's James Dyson Awards, who've listed Sono among the contenders for this year's award in industrial design.
