  1. OK... read all of this going back and forth, and although I was convinced at my last post that it was NOT allowed to work here according to my OP... now I am almost back to my original question again...

Firstly, cheers for all the replies... I never thought this would reach 5 pages (but this IS TV after all!), the amazing response is greatly appreciated!

    To answer the unstated:

    1. I am a would be consultant, I would occasionally consult for western companies based 'somewhere' in the 'western' domain
    2. I'm a citizen of two countries, permanent resident of one other
    3. I have (would be, of course) clients from all over... they need advice from time to time... I would provide this.
    4. No one else can do what I do without lots and lots of training and/or experience (which I could provide locally (IF I had a WP))
    5. I love Thailand and have been here for more than several years (several means over two but not many. Many might be five or fifty for all I know <deleted>)
    6. I stay here with my Thai GF, and our time together we both enjoy immensely (we've been together for well over 4 years, she's never worked in a bar (she's an accountant) but she loves the whiskey I buy) and she's never asked me for a <deleted>' penny, bless her heart. Despite that, she's convinced me to give my all, and I do without any hesitation whatsoever (maybe I am stupid (I don't think so))
    7. I've had a work permit here previously (for over 3 years), have two cars purchased during that time; one paid for, one still is in finance
    8. The company I would consult for doesn't care where I live, whether it's here or Lagos... I prefer Thailand...
    9. What makes me happy makes my client happy (not that that matters in this discussion)
    10. I might think for 0-6 hours in any single day, could be 0-6 days a week, depending on the query... 7th day is for the purge!
    11. I might document my thinking with diagrams, text, specs, or photos... maybe even complete 3d generated model data and documentation to support all.
    12. I enjoy my consulting more than most things (most things excludes pussy (nonetheless) and vodka)
    13. I'm not a teacher, but I love to teach... makes my life easier (wish I could get a commission on that 555)
    14. For me, with my life, I feel every day is a holiday

I hope that clarifies anything in regards to my pending situation

  2. The language in the Visa Application form as I quoted above says that " ... in no case shall I engage myself in any profession or occupation while in the country."

If you want to have a discussion as to what "in no case" means that 's fine but the only thing that matters is when some "competent person" has some reason to interpret that clause differently from the way you would choose to interpret it.

This answers the question completely, thanks!

  3. Ao Nang is a quiet town, a bit family friendly... there's a few pubs around that get hopping, but not a lot of sexy girls on the prowl or sex industry (at least out in the open) that can put the icing on the cake on those big party nights if you get to fvcked up to work at picking up chicks LOL

  4. OP: It's nice to see that you've got a positive outlook, I hope it stays that way.

I'm assuming you're new to Thailand and reality hasn't seeped through the shine just yet. When the penny drops, it will probably become apparent why there's so much stress and negativity. It's you who needs to decide how to deal with the perceptions and realities.

There's a lot to love here, but there's a lot that can drive you mad depending on what/who you're involved with and how you surround yourself.

I've lived in several countries... nowhere's perfect and you can't keep all the people happy all of the time... Sometimes it's difficult for some to keep the positive outlook after seeing all the angst and strife here, but really, in the end, you weigh your options and go from there.

  5. When I last moved here in 2009, I test drove the toyota pick-up, fortuner, isuzu mu7, and the dmax

MU7 was waaay too ' ugly

Fortuner drove like a pick-up, didn't like the feel at all

Toyota was great, but a bit too stiff for my requirements... If I was carrying heavy loads, I would have chosen that as I bought a vigo back in 2002 up in Chiang Rai and it was a great workhorse.

I chose the DMax (2.5L, 5MT with bells and whistles) as it was a very comfortable ride, smaller turning radius, good fuel economy, and it looked pretty good.

I've had just a few issues with the Kenwood GPS, and the service regarding these issues has been mediocre. I've had this truck for over five years and the damn GPS is still wonky

Other than that, I've had no problems with the truck itself, and Isuzu service is everywhere and very good.

Fuel economy is great, and the truck still runs great! Very happy with my purchase.

  6. my goodness is this a serious question ?

The question seems serious, but the answers are both hilarious and pathetic at the same time in true TV style!

If she's a nice girl and you want to impress her, don't take her anywhere near Nana, Cowboy, or Patpong at first of course... wait until you get to know her.

I'd recommend taking her down to the dog-leg at Sukh Soi 11 for a meal and drinks, there are a couple of good places there:

Firehouse has great burgers (big enough you might be able to split one and both of you have a full meal!)

Apoteka has great Jazz & Blues

Q Bar is a pretty cool night club right across the street, they try to keep the freelancers out with a cover charge, it works to a point, but...

There are a few other pubs in the immediate area

Too bad Oskar is jam packed full of hungry but trying to look classy aging freeelancers, creepy guys looking to hook up, and lots of eurotrash, but they have good drinks and food

Levels nightclub is a higher-end hoe fest full of prowling freelancers and is quite packed on weekend nights

Climax is a super low-end hoe fest, but can be fun if you like messy

Bed Supperclub is now a parking lot, too bad LOL

Checkin 99 is cheap and kinda cool if you're over 60 and want to feel like you've time-warped back to your teenage years. Bring your heart pills in case you or anyone has an aneurysm from all the spandex-clad filipinas on stage singing Abba and Grease tunes

Thong Lo has some great places, but many are more upmarket and expensive, but I'd recommend

Fat Gutz at TL 12, best Fish & Chips I've had here and sometimes good jazzy/bluesy music

Muse is really nice for a dinner/drinks date, by memory the prices aren't too bad and the Thai Indie music is mellow

    There's also lot's of pubs/nightclubs in RCA

There's lot's of great bars and restaurants around the city, the trick is finding ones you're both comfortable in. After the first date or so you can suss out what she likes and go from there.

  7. So he says that the suspect arrested at the border "resembled the yellow shirted bomb suspect"? I don't think so, the face was very different, I would say that in that case the first suspect looked more like yellow shirt

I'm no facial recognition expert, but I see a similarity:

    attachicon.gifBangkok-338972.jpg

Apparently you changed your mind since you (and your buddy green job) ridiculed the post (with passport photo) stating a resemblance yesterday? Oh, I get it, "similarity" not "resemblance"....now a nose, eyes and ears is enough? ..brilliant clap2.gif

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/852712-police-to-announce-arrest-of-bangkok-bomber/?p=9804087

Yes, it was brilliant; but no, TV Einstein... I waited until I had a full view of the face than a guy covered with a hat and dark glasses before I started squawking like rubber ducky

  8. OP: Info on long stay visa for de-facto relationship is provided at the URL below. Visa would enable your partner to work and have access to Medicare. If at the time of applying you and partner have been in a full time relationship for three years or more the two year waiting period to transition to permanent residency can be waived.

    https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Visa-1/309-

Guidance on the application process is downloadable from:

    https://www.border.gov.au/Forms/Documents/1127.pdf

Current advice from Immi for processing time between 5 - 12 months. Right now visa fee is AUD 6865.00

My God... The fee just last year was under 3k as far as I remember... Almost 7k is crazy to me!

Moving back to Oz is going to cost a lot of money, need to buy a car, apartment, furniture and now a $6900 visa arrgghh!

  9. The dating sites are all the same,

You can shag any of the girls within 1 hour of physically meeting them.

    Every single one of them.

That's just the way it is.

Every single one of them is such a load of crap... depends on who you're talking to. If you find hookers, you get hookers. If you find goofd girls, they would shut you down in two seconds flat with an attitude like that.

  10. If you be en living with her you could bring here on a partner visa, government recognises de facto relationships obviously your going to need to prove it only catch current government jacked up the costs by quite a lot, think you would be looking at around $AU8000, then she gets permanent after 2 years, she can work from day one.

Long stay that's the cheapest option other wise education visa she can work but that's going to cost you around 10 plus grand a year, hope she thinks she's got a great relationship with you because once she's got permanent residence who knows what could come into her mind.

Thanks for your reply mate... about her permanent residence, she actually prefers to stay here closer to family and loves her country, but wants to stay with me and also understands that me working in the west will be better for after I retire in about 10 or 13 years...

I'd really prefer to stay here also, but want a more comfortable retirement that I am forecasting if I stay

  11. Where is Nong Jok?

Good God man... have you really not yet heard of Google? In less than one minute I searched right from your question and now I everything about Nong Jok in regards to your question. The correct spelling is Nong Chok according to some sources.

    Translation:

    เขตหนองจอก kàyt nŏng jòk

    Wiki:

Nong Chok (Thai: หนองจอก; IPA: [nɔ̌ːŋ tɕɔ̀ːk]) is one of the 50 districts (Khet) of Bangkok, Thailand. It is bounded by other districts (from north clockwise): Amphoe Lam Luk Ka of Pathum Thani Province, Amphoe Bang Nam Priao and Amphoe Mueang Chachoengsao of Chachoengsao Province, Lat Krabang, Min Buri and Khlong Sam Wa of Bangkok. It is the biggest and the least populated district of Bangkok.

FYI, Google lets you search for REALLY NEAT stuff like Wikipedia and maps and all kinds of useful things:

  12. Hello All...

Hope people can give me some advice/tips on the best way to bring my lady back home with me:

I'm American also with New Zealand citizenship and lived in Melbourne for ten years before moving here (six years now in Thailand). With my NZ citizenship, I am considered a permanent resident of Australia and can come and go and work as I please.

I've been offered a job with a Melbourne-based company and actually would like to move back to top up my retirement fund a bit more for five or ten years.

My lady and I have been together for over four years, in a great relationship, and I'd of course like her to come back and stay with me.

She has a college degree, works in the finance department of a medium sized company here in Bangkok, and has a bit of money in the bank.

Can anyone share info, recommendations, do's/don'ts on how I should proceed to get her a decent length of time visa and possibly even a working permit for Oz?
