  1. If you don't even have 20K bath for the move then I think it's risky.

In a country like Thailand you should always have some kind of back-up money (overseas)

    in case of an emergency.

The job don't sound too firm to me, you didn't get the offer from the school direct? but from your friend.

Depending of your qualifications, I would consider going home to the US and save some money first and

then try later to a get a job here.

I only have around 5,000 right now. But I also am leaving in 2 weeks. So that was plenty for the time. The job is good. My friend has worked with them for 2 years and has helped them find new teachers many times, it's all good.

Going home and coming back anytime soon, is mostly not an option. I sold off pretty much everything I own to come on this trip. So it would be years before I could come back, sadly.

  2. Last week I got a job offer to teaching Math at a school in Pattaya. My friend is a teacher with the school and works through an agency. He's good friends with a guy there and talked to him and they said they needed a math teacher for the semester starting in May. So after talking with the agency for awhile they want me to work and come out there the last week of April. The semester starts May 2nd or around that he said.

Now here's the problem, I was never going to stay here in Thailand. I'm living in Chiang Mai now and my visa ends in two weeks, almost right when the school starts. I don't have the money to move down there. I thought I was going to be leaving after songkran so I don't have that kind of money. Why would I, I thought I was leaving in 2 weeks lol. I don't want to tell the agency I don't have the money to move and I don't want to ask for a loan. That would look bad asking that before I even started and I'm scared if I asked that they would say forget it and hire someone else. So I guess I'm at some crazy cross roads where I either go back to America or some how try to find the money to go down there. I want to stay cause the job seems pretty good.

The job is only 20 hours a week and pays 35,000 baht a month. Pretty good to me and I get a work permit on top of it. So what should I do? Should I maybe try to start a indiegogo campaign to raise some funds or some other crazy idea? I was thinking I would need around 20,000 baht to move, that includes the condo rental, flight, food for the first month, and some work clothes.

Why couldn't I have gotten the job when I first got here haha.

  3. I just did this about 2 weeks ago. Here are some of my cost (some cost might be off a little, going from memory)

1 VIP Bus from Chiang Mai to Udon Thani 880 B

2 Bus from Udon Thani to Nong Khai 40 B

3 Tuk tuk to visa agency and to border (different amounts for everyone) Laos visa 1,700 B, 500 B for the agency, tuk tuk 240 B

NOTE: I went to the agency cause they do everything for you, all paperwork and walk you through the borders and have someone take you to Consulate. For 500 baht its a good deal to me and it makes everything faster.

    4 Laos border to Consulate 300 B

5 Hotel by Consulate 900 B (overpriced hotel but nice, I wouldn't stay here again. Only stayed here cause it was my first time and didn't know my way around)

    6 Double entry visa 2,000 B

    7 Taxi back to Border 300 B

    8 Bus over border 20 or 40 B can't remember

    9 Taxi to Nong Khai 100 B

10 Bus from Nong Khai to Udon Thani 40 B

NOTE: next time I will fly back. It's 3,000 B for a ticket for Udon to CM

11 VIP bus to Chiang Mai 880 B

  4. My girlfriend wants me to teach a couple of her friends English but I need some books/guides/lesson plans/etc. to get started. I mean I can tell them how to say "My name is..." all day long but unless they understand what those words mean, I'm getting nowhere with them lol.

So is there any books I can buy in Chiang Mai or online lesson plans/English courses out there? Something good to get me started would be great. Thanks for any help

  5. I've been living in Mae Taeng, Chiang Mai for close to 2 months now. Been staying at the Mae Taeng Hotel, but it cost way too much 7,500 baht a month for a basic room. Not worth even half that if you ask me. I want to find an apartment or house here but I don't see any listings anywhere for this area. Anyone know of an apartment or house in the area? I know its more of the countryside area, but maybe someone here knows someone out here for something to rent.

  6. Hmm...I am American (from the west coast) and everybody tells me that American's are the easiest to understand out of all the other Native English speakers. Not sure if this is true. My Thai boyfriend was explaining to me that American's speak a bit slower and enunciate the words more often. Or maybe it's from Thai's watching so many American movies? Who knows...I'm just glad they can understand me! biggrin.png

I think its easier to understand cause whenever someone from a country learns English, it sounds more like "American English". I've never once heard an Asian that learned English have an "English" or other non-American accent. I'm sure there are a few out there, but 99% of people who learn English are going to sound "American".

  7. This is some ones name I met, but I don't remember her name. So I don't want to look like an ass, so anyone know what their name is lol? I know the thai spelling from their facebook account

    ความรู้สึกของ คนหมดใจ

  8. a double entry visa will give you two times 60 days in Thailand, you can extend each stay by another 30 days for 1,900 baht.

In that case you enter Thailand and get 60 days, after a day or 50 you go to an immirgation offcie and ask for an extension of 30 days for 1,900 baht. After 90 days in Thailand you leave Thailand, enter and leave another country and re-enter Thailand again for another 60 das (plus 30 day extension if you want).

But be carefull. You must make both entries before the visa itself expires, which is often after 3 months from the date of issue. So you might need to leave Thailand a little bit earlier in order to re-enter again before the visa has expired.

Just to make sure I understand this fully. You go to Laos and get visa which lets you enter thailand for 60 days, which can extend for 30 days, totaling 90 days. Before the 90 days runs out, you can exit thailand and re-enter for another 60 days and extend another 30 days. Which in total would give you 180 days?

Also I read that it's almost impossible to get a double entry visa in the countries bordering thailand, is this the case? Cause I want to go to Vientiane.

  9. Ok so plans changed again lol. A flight popped up to land in CM that comes to the same price if I was to land in bkk then go to cm. So now I'll be landing in cm and just booked the flight. I'll actually be staying in the Mae Taeng area to see a friend. So what is the best place to get my phone unlocked in cm without having to stay the night in the city. I just want to land and go straight to mae taeng.

If you are just coming to visit a friend buy a cheap throw away phone for use here in Thailand. I call back to the states and Canada for only 5 baht a minute and I have heard there is cheaper plans.

But it would be a good idea to get your phone unlocked. I would never buy a locked one.

I'm staying longer than 3 months

More so you should just buy a simple phone in Thailand which cost less than usd 30, can even get a new simple nokia at usd 10-20 (500-700 baht) or just a 2nd hand for 200-300 baht less than usd 10. Why all the trouble to buy lock phone and try unlock in Thailand?? crazy.gif

Cause I bought a new phone just to bring to Thailand lol

  12. Well looks like I'm gonna have to land in bkk then fly to cm. Just so much cheaper. What I'll do is land in bkk and get a flight in the morning to cm. Another question, I want to get my cell phone unlocked. So would it be easier to get that done in bkk or cm? It's one of those pay as you go phones, I haven't even activated it yet, do I still need to get it unlocked if I haven't activated it?

  13. In the morning I am sure you can get a flight out with Thai aur of Bangkok air for under $150.

Who were you using that charges $300 That is ball park 9,000 baht.

No, I was saying the difference between landing in bkk to cm is $300. A flight to bkk from the US is close to $1000 or to land in cm from the US is close to $1300. I'd rather save the 300 and land in bkk then go to cm. Also when I want to leave all the flights straight to cm are around 60 hours, which is insane.
