  1. Just a note on these overstays.....if by chance you were to be caught up in a check stop and asked for passports and valid visas. If it is noticed that you are on an overstay you could be detained (almost certainly) by immigration. I have not heard of it happening to a family but it could. I am not sure of the consequences if you are on bus somewhere and they check for ID and you are okay but your children are in an overstay situation....

Boggles my mind to see and hear people not bothering to get their children the proper identification while living here in Thailand.

  2. What a load of rubbish!!

The government should stop insisting that foreign teachers possess worthless degrees.

I was in the work permit office once when I see on the desk a piece of paper from Nevada university whereby they had qualiied in art!!! Please tell me, who is better qualified to teach real English out of this person or an English (person) who has been speaking the lingo for 55 years but does not have a useless degree, You decide!!

I will take the person with a degree, thank you.It is not about the "degree" itself but the structured practice that goes along with it. During ones post secondary education you develop structure, learning techniques, are subjected to various forms of assessments that are critical in teaching and disciplne.

So it is not that the other person is "educated" that qualifies them as a better teacher. It is the structure they have been exposed to that makes them better qualified. I have no doubt you could hold conversations with students and provide them with some skills they could eventually use. Teaching is about providing the foundation of life skills that requires both the introduction of knowledge but also how to correctly evaluate that knowledge.

So, no, the Government does not want to stop insisting foreign teachers have worthless degrees. There is no such thing. They should however start to insist that the degrees are in Education perhaps not in Art (as a major).

  3. I dont think that would be ok. The info is for participants. Why would u like to do that? It might be distorted too.

I actually believe that education, any education, should be free. The end goal of all of this (ie our lives) is to make this world a better place and leave it in a healthier condition than how we received it (ie how it was when we were born, to how it was when we die).

So have a look around your classroom....and keep an eye on the "guy" taking many notes.

  4. It's a Thai tradition.

    We are not Thai.

So we are off the hook. intheclub.gif.pagespeed.ce.TVIbELwsxN.gi

    ...............................................................................

What do you mean "we" I take it from some of your posts the last thing you would do is marry a Thai person. If so you do not have the option of using the word "we". Please edit and re post this saying I am not Thai .....I am off the hook.

Secondly I also believe you are Scottish and from what I hear, male Scotspersons have a hard time letting their sh*t go down the toilet as there may be some value left in it!

  5. Talking of Phetchabun, go up to the resevoir, there is a restaurant there that serves glass like prawns (clear) when the dish is served it has a clear dome over it, because the prawns are still jumping around on the plate and you eat them live! Delicious apparently, but I prefer to eat things after they are dead!

Gung Dten (goong ten) or "dancing shrimp" very common and very popular in the Thai/Laos (isaan) cooking.

  6. I asked around one what the locals had to say about this (5 guys sitting playing beer cap checkers and drinking LK). Consensus is that it is illegal to trade or sell dog/dog meat for human consumption. As another poster stated in regards to passing quality controls (which thailand has believe it or not). It is however believed not to be against the law to consume dog meat. Ie if yesterday you had four dogs and yet today you have a full belly and only three dogs that is not illegal.

Having digested (can not really say eaten) dog meat it was........a bit tough. Not at all like chicken however it may depend on the breed. I have sampled it on more than one occasion as my wifes uncle had a run in with the neighbor and his dogs eating his chickens. I am not to keen on it. As well being from the West we sort of look at dogs as more pets/family members then food. Unlike chickens, pigs (although they make good pets), and cows which have become known as food sources.

  7. For any farang heading up to the North East there is a gang of penis stealers......yep. It would seem the allure of the "giant" one eyed serpent (other words known as Nagang), it would seem that gangs of jealous Thais are knocking off the westerners to steal their.....you know....jangly bits.

There have been unconfirmed reports of 13 missing penis's (or is that peni?) in the last 6 months. All Farang. All very similar MO. Guy goes to a bar for a drink...meets a beautiful girl....she offers him something he can not refuse....gives him a ride to her place, but along the way they are accosted by a gang of midgets and the next thing the Farang knows he wakes up in Vientiane hooked up to an IV and his shlangle is missing.

So be careful out there. I have heard this from my wife's aunt's sister in law whose brother's mother mentioned it to our neighbor. So it has to be reliable as she is known to be very trustworthy!

  8. Woke up on Tuesday morning in the outdoor sala naked as a jay bird with a killer headache! No matter how long I have lived here I still forget not to start drinking with the old man. I rather enjoy my 70baht lao khao but it usually takes a day or two for the vision to return. And don't tell me none of you Isaan residents have never had a night of drinking naked with local villagers!

  9. Not promoting any products but if looking for information in regards to Nong Khai (ie city/province) check out www.mutmee.com or www.nongkhaitours.com both have plenty of info on the region.

Ps -i am in no way endorsing either but they have excellent , info...although mutmee is a great hangout.

  10. $30 usd or 1,500 baht! Up to you but many people prefer getting us$$. It costs an overtime fee of 1usd if traveling before 8am, after4pm any day of the week, or on a saturday, sunday and any Thai or Laos National Holiday. As mentioned if no passport photos (laos rules state you can be asked for 2, but never are) you pay an extra 1usd and they scan your passport. Always good to have the name of a hotel, address and phone number handy (even if not staying there) for the Laos immigration form. And never put unemployed as an occupation, it is almost as bad as putting teacher.

Ps - the shuttles busesbthat run across the bridge are either 15 or 20 baht depending kn the time of day (see above). If traveling this weekend sept 5-8 we have the ONIE games happening in NK and the bridge is very busy.

    Enjoy.....

  11. I have found my family and friends have not changed really. I see most in the same job (dr., lawyer, retail etc) but I have found them a little older, stressed, and seemingly just putting in time. For whatever reason I found living in Thailand (and other spots I have lived) rejuvinating!

Would I fit in? Certainly, but it is not a lifestyle I would enjoy. Albeit I do miss eating a "real" Chicago Deep Dish pepperoni/mushroom pizza.

  12. Maybe I need to get out more, but I never seem to hear about stuff like this taking place in Isaan.

    That's correctly worded.

    (You never hear about it.)

Actually, I have to agree with Docno.....have lived here going on 5 years now and have never heard of a naked falang being arrested inside a 7/11 or on the streets in Nong Khai.

We get drug addicts, molesters, drunks, seedy expats, quiet expats same as other places but I have never seen the sort of "mentally abused" type of people as in places like Pattaya. Truly the fringe of society. Which is fine, they have to end up somewhere.

Have to say the worst place I have ever lived for deranged people was Las Vegas. It makes Pattaya look like Sesame Street.

  13. Will they be seriously dealing with complaints of double-pricing? Which I believe is illegal.

You must be new here.....again.....repeated for the umpteenth thousandth time......there is no double-pricing in Thailand (which you believe is illegal......what country are you from??)! I might guess the "Nanny" state of Australia, where I believe they have just passed a law that it is illegal to pick your own nose as this violates the law of one shall not cause "brain damage" to oneself or others.

Local Thai residents get discounts on items that are produced, manufactured, promoted or sold in their home country.....the regular price is the price you pay. And as far a as I am aware providing a discount is not illegal....you are just a lousy bargainer.

  14. I am not sure this "tourist court" will help much. On average there are 417 "guns shoved up your nose" cases every day. It is becoming sooo popular that many tour companies are now advertising this "newest" tourist attraction. No longer do thrill seekers look for bungee jumping, sling shot rides 100 meters above the ground, shooting class IV rapids! How boring is that!!

But getting a gun shoved up your nose after getting scammed by the local mafia jet ski scammers, the police and Thai Government.

First Choice Tours in Ireland are the first to promote this new adventure under their "Craic'ng Good Gun of Fun" Tour.......

Sheesh more drama queens on this site than in a Thai "Ladyboy" locker room.

  15. The Canadian Embassy issues a letter confirming issuance of new passport with details. This can then be copied or given to immigration when transferring needed items. Have never had an issue.

Not sure how long the OP has lived in Thailand but as with all things here the rules vary from area to area. Thai Immigration officials can ask for most anything they like if they wanted to.

  16. Stay in Ireland unless you have no job, no possibility of a job, or are 100% unemployable. Save what you think (or what your wife thinks you need) then double those savings asyou will need every satang. I am from Cavan been living here for over 4 years with two children. First chance we get we will move back to Ireland.

If you do come asothers have said do not buy the house even if the wife says you need it. Teaching in a government school is difficult with the biggest issue being classroom management, you have to see it to believe it but it is terrible. Working as a chef is possible but unless you are at a main stream tourist hotel or restaurant you will make less than teaching.

As for childrens education mine go to Thai schools but are home schooled mostly. They are both fluent in thai, isaan, english and french so if you are willing to step up and teach them education should not be a problem.

Good luck but I would ask you to think long and hard about coming here. By the way what, just roughly, do you consider sufficient savings? I started with just a little over 5,000,000 baht.......thought it was enough! I had a job upon arrival, work permit sorted and a degree.....

  17. It's this kind of stuff that stops the rest of the world from taking Thailand seriously...

Can you tell me what countries in the rest of the world have even heard of this? Seriously. There are very few news articles about this outside of Thailand. I mentioned this to some people in Ireland, England and Canada and nobody had the faintest clue as to what I was talking about.

I always enjoy reading TV forum and news but you can not base all of your knowledge about Thailand from what you read here.

  18. I think this has been handled rather......well...the Thai immigration people could have given 5 years notice this was happening andthe same people would be complaining about hoe Thailand hates farang. Your rants get very tiresome.

If you are unable to read a calendar, your passport details and visa excemption stamp and determine when to apply, maybe time to cut back on the beer.

  19. The far north east region is a fantastic place to take in the Real Isaan. As some have mentioned moving around a bit might be a good way to see some of it.

    I would recommend the Chiang Khan to Nakon Phanom river route. Can be done by bus at a leisurely pace. Stops to make would be;

    Loei

    Chiang Khan

    Sangkhom (buoys guest house)

    Sri Chiang Mai

Nong Khai (mut mee guest house)

Bueng Kan (visit wat phu tok)

Nakhon Phanom (visit wat taat phanom)
