  1. I was wondering , maybe if I sat around in a hut in the hills, maybe I would get a free ticket to NZ and a house lined up awaiting my arrival. :o

This is a story that flies back and forth every couple of years, and there must be more to it than this.

It does of course make more interesting reading than your normal run of the mill Burmese refugee. Photo opps are also more appealing.

It could just be plain and simply that living in a tourist village a much better deal than being stuck in a refugee camp.

Then of course moving abroad is an even better deal than living in a tourist village.

But maybe the Thai official is right once you have taken the deal of the tourist village you are no longer a refugee.

If it wasn't for the long neck factor it would just be another boring story of refugee doesn't have correct paperwork.

A good lesson in how we choose to read articles , why they are interesting and grab our attention.

Sometimes the really important matter is just dead boring.

What is more scary is that so many people take what they see at face value and to be the absolute truth.

So, if they are no longer classed as refugees what is their status?

Do they have Thai ID cards?

  2. Stick ALL the clubs in the golf bag upside down. :o

Good call OneeyedJohn, will give that a try this year. I only use a soft coverall bag so I always feel the woods are very vulnerable, at the mercy of the baggage handlers.

Don't forget a handicap certificate, I usually bring one when I come over so I can play with the expats in Chiang Mai.

  3. Give it a miss for the time being until they have sorted the course out, it is worth a visit in the right circumstances. We played last August, about 2 weeks before the flood, my mate went there 3 weeks ago and had the same comments about its condition as rcjoop. How about trying Lanna, they have 27 holes to choose from there, you can hire clubs there and just play 9 holes.

  4. Seem to remember that there was a decent selection of these better maps at the DK bookstore on Thanon Khotchasan when we went for a browse there during last years annual visit. It was the first time I had seen decent detailed maps in Thailand.

  5. Anyone know if there is any reasonabley priced golf in Chiang Mai. Monthly or annual memberships. My wife and I both play so can be costly. Any info would be great.  :o

Here's a link with a list of local clubs with green fees.

I've just returned from annual visit to family in Thailand, had a week or so in Chiang Mai. We played Lanna, Chiang Mai - Lampun GC and Gymkhana this time round, prices posted in the link agree with what we paid.

Both this year and last we played with some guys in a expats golf society 'Chiang Mai Golfer Club', for a photo and a couple of hundred baht you can join there society, they play competitions twice a week at the various courses, members are a mixed bunch including retiree's. One good thing with membership, which if you'r looking at playing more than the twice a week with the CNGC, they have negotiated discounts for green fee's at various courses on presentation of the card. The guy to contact for this is Ric Cameroon '[email protected]', he can update you on costs etc.

PM me if you need any more info

    :D

Try these links to contact the various courses. Do you play golf or are you just starting, are you living in CM or going there for a holiday?

Gymkhana club is an old 9 hole course near the Ping river in the town, nice course, bit of history there and some mature trees ! Very easy to get to if your staying in town. Lanna course is also in easy striking distance of the town and a nice established course. Chaing Mai - Lamphun GC is getting on for 15 years old, very natural course set in its own vally. Green valley, modern style course, well laid out, nice club house. Mae Jo, only 9 holes opened last year when i played it last year but shows lots of promise, hopefully all 18 will be open when we get there in July.

I have played these 4 courses in the CM area, all worth a visit and I'm sure the other courses will be just as good. If you need lessons you could probably arrange some at one of the driving ranges as an option. Try a post in the CM forum, might get some more local info.

Tks for the reply. I hv been playing for a while but am a high handicapper and very frustrated. Where would the driving ranges for the lessons be..wud the one at Gymkhana be good or do u hv any other alternatives..Tks

There is a good driving range near the airport, last time I was there people were having lessons. Best thing is to go to the driving ranges / clubs and see what they have on offer.

One tip, never take a lesson out onto the golf course, spend the time to practice what you have been taught on the driving range / practice ground, then get out onto the course.

  8. I'm over in Thailand for a few weeks in the summer with my family and a friend of mine who is a keen birdwatcher. As usual we will be spending a few days up in Chiang Mai playing some golf, taking it easy etc.

My friend is keen to do a bit of bird spotting while up in Chiang Mai and I was wondering if anyone knew of any clubs / groups that Graham could tie up with while we are there?

We were in Chiang Mai last summer and had a couple of failed attempts round the hots springs and on the dirt roads up on Doi Sutep, as I understand from Graham a bit of local knowledge goes a long way

    Thanks Kevin
