  1. When you put some context into the situation, you sound less moronic for sure. I guess if I moved out to the country though, I would just expect country people anywhere to do some pretty stupid things. And I am saying that from experience, I grew up in the country.

I always found country people to have more common sense than city folk

I have found that there are many on both ends of the spectrum. From where I am from, there are some successful farmers with a lot of common sense, most of the people are just average, and there are some super crazy back woods people that want to stay far away from the city. It is widely known who the crazy ones are around the area and people know to avoid them.

  2. To the OP. Who is the real moron here? The guy who is just acting the way he normally acts on a day to day basis..burning down trees with tires. Or the guy who CHOSE to live next to the guy who sees no problem burning down trees with tires and smoking out his neighbor?
So when we bought the land 9 years ago we were supposed to have detailed knowledge of the owner of the adjoining paddy burning habits?

In my 13 years in Thailand he is the only guy I know who has tried to get rid of a tree using burning tyres.

Next time we buy land maybe I'll prepare a questionnaire for the neighbours.

Your logic is perplexing. You really think the issue here is how many times in 13 years has someone tried to burn down a tree next to your property? Trying to point out this is a one time occurrence has nothing to do with my point. Surely this isn't the first complaint you have about a neighbor in 13 years.

    • This is Thailand. This kind of thing is going to happen more often here than other places. Surely you knew that before moving here.
    • Your neighbor is so close to your house that a fire is seriously bothering you.
    • You chose to live next to a field, where people are likely to do strange things that may not happen in the city or another location.
    • You should always speak to the neighbors before you buy a house or property. That interaction is the questionnaire. Preferably you know someone in the neighborhood before you move in.

I know all about farming burning habits, my in-laws are farmers, rice and sugarcane. I don't like it, it's not necessary imo but I accept it goes on.

What I don't accept is burning rubber tyres in front of someone's house when the wind is such that the toxins are blown directly onto the front of the house. It is far from normal farming activity. It's selfish, illegal and moronic behaviour, simple as that and I am not the only one who complained about it.

The place still stinks 2 days later, he has burnt rubber in the canal that feeds his paddy now so the pollution will be going into the food chain. Not only moronic but dangerous for the people who will unknowingly be buying his rice.

It's Thailand, what did you expect?

There are certain family members that I can't stand- either I accept them or I move with or without her to a place I'll never see them again.

My Thai family are great, love them to bits and wouldn't be without them.

  5. Romance can be experienced anywhere, my point mainly was about privacy, ask once or twice fine, 5 or 6 not fine.

We have a right to eat in privacy without having to relocate, we will eat at restaurants when we choose, not out of fear of hawkers.

I know people will say don't complain then if your going to eat there, that still does not make it right.

I had friend who only ate at expensive places, his ex bargirl wife chose the places, does that make her classy, or is it somewhat like putting a silk hat on a pig.

I don't have to put on the dog, we will eat wherever the mood takes us, and enjoy it, I do like a good restaurant and frequent them often, but I love street food to.

Funny a swipe at bar girls after being commented on eating street food. With the delight of street foods come hawkers who often pay the same people the street food people pay. Its the norm.

You have no right to privacy when eat street food its the most basic and lowest restaurant there is and with that come sellers. Its a fact of life. The bar girl was obvious a lot smarter as you knowing that an more expensive restaurant gives more privacy. You hear it here on Thaivisa but you just don't want to listen. Forget your western Ideas your in Thailand.

so your of the belief my friends bargirl wife who is now his ex was thinking to herself, lets find a private restaurant, ok lucky him I thought she was fleecing him but you educated me today it was all for the privacy.

The post was about the best way to politely move them on, and a few answered well, we will continue eating at these lowest of places as you refer to them and deal with it.

Sure as hell cannot eat at a fine restaurant every night and would not if I could, I'm past going to joints to impress others and give a false impression of my self to boost my ego by appearing to be something I am not.

I have had pockets full of cash and still eaten at these place, as I said I still eat at restaurants to, depends on the mood and what's doing.

    1. Like most suggested don't engage in conversation or make any acknowledgement.

    2. Be rude to them and aggressive, exactly opposite of what suggest, but will be much more effective than trying to be polite.

    3. My personal favorite is to either take the item they are selling and say thank you without paying for it or tell them you will buy a large quantity of whatever they are selling. They get the point rather quickly that you are not interested.

    4. Quit complaining about eating at street food stalls. After all you are eating in the street. What do you really expect?

  6. The I'm going to research people and what they have posted on TV to try and prove a point totally unrelated to the original topic brigade.

    Not me I hope............w00t.gif

    I really was a choir boy............gigglem.gif

Don't think so. Not everything is about you..lol jk

  7. Port Charlotte is a poor comparison to Chiang mai.

    they have nothing in common

They both have houses, cost of living, weather, transportation...etc..

Can you pick any place on the globe that you find appropriate to compare to Changmai?

  8. The USA is not perfect, neither is thailand. In regards to the original topic I find many pros a cons for each, but at this stage in my life i don't feel thailand has the career path to offer me financial security in the future. I enjoy my life here but will never adopt all the things to be able to survive like an average professional thai. In twenty years my mentality will be much different as will thailand.

So for me I'm not here for the long haul now just yet. But in the future this may be a place at the top of my list to retire. But by then I'm sure it will be a completely different place maybe better, but most probably worse. In the year+ I have been here I can already see significant negative changes that discourage me from staying.

  9. But then I have to put the other side of the story

1, I can buy a three bedroom house on 1 hectare of land for GBP20000

    2. My children have free health care and schooling

    3. Tax. ?What tax?

    4. I can buy 2 meals a day for 1.20GBP

    3. I can rent a 3 bedroom house for 120GBP a month

    4. Electric and water are about the same (with aircon!)as the UK

    5. I can open any shop I want, in the street or in the shophouse. No permit required. No Health and Safety!

    6. I have mobile phones and broadband: about the same as the UK a month

    7. I have an airport. 30GBP one way 800 kilometers to the capital, one hour.

    8. Can summon a workman to mend anything within 1 hour. Maybe 5.00GBP a day

    9.Petrol 60p a litre

    10. Can buy anything 24/7

Now think about the UK! If it were not for the schools Never mind the people I don’t think we would leave.!!

Seems your reasons are almost entirely economically driven.

  11. I started using my phone long ago (Google maps) and have no desire to go back to a GPS stand alone. In Thailand you often have to type in the province to get directions, Google maps makes suggestions, I can add places that I have found on my computer to my personal Google bookmarks folder and then navigate there any time.

I used a GPS for many years in Europe but find that they are almost worse than useless in Thailand.

    +1

Google Maps is the most accurate when giving street directions. Maps on Iphone is terrible! It does not know how to find my condo because the maps don't have my street, but they are on Google maps.

I have no idea why anyone would want to use a stand alone GPS to find anything in Thailand. There is no way the maps are as up to date as Google maps. Google Maps includes live traffic information as well.

Regarding your point about translation issues, Google maps brings up the suggestions based on names close to what you enter. Every navigation unit I have used makes you spell it exactly.

  12. Just coming from Bkk to pattaya on motorway 7 today. Guy in the right lane changing a tire. One guy waving traffic around. The thai in my car did not see any issue with this at all.

To the posters point above. Do they now understand that you pull over to the left shoulder to change a tire? His tire was completely shredded so his rim was already ruined anyway. Another 100 meters of driving on it would have got him safety on the left shoulder.

  13. Absolutely no way I would consider wasting another precious day of life in LOS.

But you sure do spend a lot of time on "Thai"Visa. Must be something about the LOS that keeps you coming back.

People should be living in Thailand if they want to be on ,,Thai Visa,, Admin should rule on this ,,, If you don't live here Get off,,, thumbsup.gifcoffee1.gif

I was more interested in thai visa before I moved to thailand. Restricting it to residents is a ridiculous idea.

What is the requirement for being a resident? How do you plan on enforcing this?

How about the few a-holes who offer nothing to the discussion get banned instead.

  14. Also along the same lines, never seen a U.S. Built house made from reinforced concrete.

And by the way, I have helped construct both. Not sit back watching or supervising, I was the one swinging the hammer and bending the rebar. So my information is from the real world. Far from the world some posters live in.

  15. in USA, they do holes every 3 meters to put poison, if you don't do it, your house is infected by termites and other nasty insects. no protection against tornadoes in Oklahoma Nebraska and Texas. most house are built in cheep wood mounted in less than a month.

sink and water system is low quality. windows are crap, buildings are horrible . I would not put one peny in a US house.

if Thai house are crap , it's simply because they copy the USA. they want the American dream too.

if you build correctly in the Thai style, you won't have all these problems. why do you think most US citizen are now in debts? because their house are crap and cost too much to maintain . the entire USA system is generally crap, roads are crap, food is crap, airports are crap, army is crap, school system is crap, police is crap, Obama is crap,... :)

Clearly you just write things to get a rise out of others. There is no way you actually believe what you post.

Thais copy the Americans for how they build houses? America has strict build codes with houses primarily made out of wood. Have yet to see see a thai house made out of wood. Have seen a few shacks with tin or bamboo roofs with a couple of pieces of wood as support.

  16. Songkran is celebrated in the most idiotic ways now. I'm surprised that even the Thais allow this kind of behavior. In Phnom Penh this week it was so much calmer and relaxed. Just a kind request from the locals and a little powder on each cheek.

I spent 2 days watching Thais having the time of their lives. I bet most of them were thinking 'I wonder how many boring humdrum farang are hating the fact we are having fun'.

Last year I got out the go pro camera on my big bike and rode around and filmed it. That was enough for me.

  18. According to this report, he hit the windshield and then ended up 200 meters away? There has to be more to the story.

Car going 120-140kph, hits motorbike, the rider hits the windshield and is thrown over the back, the motosai is lodged in the front of the car, the driver of the car tries to minimize the risk of a further collision or loss of control by slowly bringing the car to a halt in safe place and not jumping on the brakes and endangering himself and his family any more, like some inexperienced driver may do.

"bringing the car to a halt in safe place and not jumping on the brakes and endangering himself and his family any more, like some inexperienced driver may do. "

?? You ever heard of ABS? Do you have an advanced driver's licence?

In, or even approaching, a collision, if avoidance is not possible for sure you slam the brakes and the judder of ABS stops you a lot more slowly and permits steering, without endangering anything. I don't know where you got your last statement from but it is complete BS.

    Not all cars have ABS.

What's written is post collision, not pre.

    Sorry for your misunderstanding. thumbsup.gif

It's a Camry, it has abs if it was made in the last 25 years.

  19. I wouldn't envy somebody, who recently boasted that he bought a pair of jeans for $22 which would be much more expensive in Thailand, for his "wealth" tongue.png

I usually spend about 300bht ($10) on jeans in Thailand, is that bad?

Cheap price..but I suspect they don't fit well or last long...I have half a closet of thai purchased inexpensive clothes that just don't fit right...but hey if they work for you that's great. I used to shop for clothes here..now I shop for them when I'm back home ...

1-2 years, they fit me very well (but I'm size 34 not the 44 many foreign men are, does anything fit the big boys well?)

Size 32....or 33 in Thai because they like to lie about the true size of clothing. Makes no sense.

My main complaint about the clothing is shirts that after one wash look like A half shirt and barely cover my belt line.

  21. Wait - good food, decent vibe, friendly locals, low cost of living and Old Glory hung proudly from the front of people's homes, and you STILL prefer Thailand ? neversure will be foaming at the mouth ..... even I could use some of that overnight shipping, usually free if you buy enough goodies from Amazon. What the hell am I doing here ? ;)

One key component missing...beautiful asian women. Not many Asians there either. I don't have to live In Asia, but I need to live near Asians. And California fits that bill for me.
