Yes I agree it's licensing laws. The same licensing laws require retailers not to sell alcohol before 11AM and not after midnight. Has nothing to do with school kids.

Oh yes it has!!! This original law goes back to 1965 and is part of the "Child Protection Act". It wasn't enforced until 2002 when the act was modified. Then the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security insisted that the act must be strictly enforced....... and so we have this ridiculous and illogical law.

  2. The past couple years I've been using the income method. This year I decided to change to the 800,000 baht in the bank method. I'll have three months seasoning just in time to renew my extension but would like to get it done a few days early. Since this is my first extension using the baht in the bank method, is two months seasoning all that I need?

  3. Break the egg into a microwave safe bowl. Stir it up or at least puncture the yolk or it could explode. Microwave for 45 seconds. If it is not done, microwave another 10 -15 seconds. If the egg sticks, you should oil the bowl.

  4. I'll be visiting Japan soon, and a friend there wants be to bring her some "saffron" from Thailand. She was in Bangkok a couple years ago and we went to the night market near Lumpini Park, where she bought a bag of fake saffron. Real saffron is very expensive, and I doubted the quality of this 50 - 100 ? gram bag that, as I recall. only cost a few hundred baht. I have now Googled fake saffron, and found that what she bought, was almost certainly, safflower, which has the same color, but not much, if any, flavor.

Is this fake saffron available in Pattaya, or will I need to go to Bangkok?

    Bonus questions:

    1. Anyone know the going price, either in Pattaya or in Bangkok?

    2. Should I tell her that it is not real saffron?

  5. I still have not seen Coke Zero, etc. at Big C, but bought a couple 1.25 L bottles at Tesco on Pattaya Nua today.

I also saw some of the smaller bottles of Coke Zero at a Family Mart on Second Rd., so the drought, caused by the flooding, could be coming to an end. Off topic, the ice cream freezer at the Family Mart was also full, including a good supple of Magnum ice cream bars. Hmmm. Coke Zero and the Magnum bars. Hmmm.

  6. .

I renewed last year with a letter that was 9 months old and will renew this year with one that is 4 months old.

My understanding, based on regular updates from the Pattaya City Expats Club, is that the letter cannot be more than one year old.

Of course, as we all know, the regulations are subject to change with a shift in the wind-- or at the whim of the agent processing your request.

Also, the U.S. Embassy outreach for Pattaya is November 21 (three days away), not December, as you stated. (see link below)

Thanks for the info and the correction of my error on the date. I'll get my letter on Monday, and request the extension a little early, and hope that this saves a trip to Bangkok.

  7. Thinking about buying a golf GPS here in the USA before leaving for the winter in Pattaya. Some other units, like the Garmin, look good, but don't have Thai courses.

I play lots of different courses in Chonburi. Anyone have experience using golf GPS around Pattaya? Skycaddie looks like they have most all of the courses I play mapped. But Skycaddie has an annual fee of, I think $70, for the world wide course info. But if it is the best unit for Thailand I'd think I'd pay the fee. The Golf Buddy World might be good too, and there is no annual fee.

Thanks for anyone with some actual on the ground info.

  8. I have not tried the airport hotel option, however, I will consider it for future trips.

The OP has a condo in Pattaya. In that situation, I would just take a taxi. Avoid the two airport transfers and straight to condo, without taking the Bell bus transfer minibus in Pattaya. The only downside is it takes an extra hour or so to get to bed. Costs are about equal, because he does not need to pay for a room in Pattaya.

In my case, I need to pay for a room in Pattaya. After about 20-24 hours flying from the USA, getting into bed an hour quicker in an airport hotel, does sound nice. Arrive in Pattaya refreshed, about noon the next day on the Bell bus. Also, no problem with late night arrival if staying in a Pattaya guest house or condo, without 24 hr reception. At the airport, not tempted by late night, jet lagged, Pattaya nightlife. This could be a plus or a minus.

    1. Taxi (1,100 baht) plus hotel in Pattaya, (call it 750 baht, same at airport hotel). Total 1,850 baht.

    2. Airport hotel, (750 baht) plus Bell bus, (200 baht). Total 950 baht.

  9. I had a bad wheel on my big roller case and had to throw it out and buy new, or get the wheel replaced. As suggested above I took it to Mr. Bag-Fix on Sukhumvit. The shop is on the east side of Sukhumvit, just north of Pattaya Nua, (across from the gas station). He asked for 450 baht, but accepted my offer of 400 baht for the repair. The bag was ready in five days as promised, and seems as good as new.
