  1. but what about the alleged life threat I am reading in the nation today.

    Watch:

"Help, I'm afraid that my life is in danger for even making this post." Signed, The Other Mac.

Now John, tell all your friends that even semi-anonymous Thaivisa members are in fear of their lives due to freedom of speech issues. Perhaps one of them happens to know a reporter who feels that the public needs to know about this intimidation. Perhaps that reporter might not be 100% diligent in investigating whether I have genuine reason to think my life is in danger.

Actually, we all know from regular experience that the Thai press can't get right basic facts that can be checked in encyclopedias or simply by asking the local population. The notion of them doing any research at all is rather humourous. Or it would be, if people didn't still believe something just because they read it in print.

  2. I constantly flick over to the News forum to keep up with the headlines. God knows why, it's all the usual stuff... just now I sort of mentally sat back and looked at them in wonder. This is seriously what we consider normal?! If so, I've got to somehow put this into the metaphorical shoebox of old photos, to be looked at in 20 years time. What an amazing mix of the dramatic this-will-go-down-in-history, the desperate daily problems, and the surreal. What an amazing movie you could make about today.

As of this moment, here are the news stories on Thaivisa:

  3. HOw come you like camarón de la Isla?...

I come from a traditional Irish family :D

I don´t think that work wxist in english but...

I'm almost certain these works don't wxist in wny lanxuage :D :D :D:D

    traditional irish family... :D

What about the flamenco...how come you like it

People talk about wearing green (or orange) and music and <deleted>... Ireland's biggest tradition is emigration.

(The Camerón albums come from my sister's fiancé.)

That´s true you have a massive emigration to america...

I was atonished because I didn´t see the relationship between traditional irish family and flamenco...

Do you like camarón...What about other flamenco singers....?

Are you part of our band...

    Can you play any instrument...

I don´t know if you are aware of my little shop called "Glauka´s gypsy stall"...

Maybe you want to buy something...oranges...socks...hankies...

    :o

Am I part of the band? Uh, dunno... I was just enjoying being part of the thread... a sort of stubbornly tangential part... I have a guitar. But I don't really play it anymore. I could probably pick out Romanza del'amor (have I got that right?) but no, I don't really know any about flamenco except that I like it, preferably in some cobbled midnight square when things are just getting going...

No, really, thanks, I don't need a hanky-GET YOUR HAND OUT OF MY POCKET! :D

  5. Rental of fridge/tv at 500 per month. Laundry (coin-op washing machines), drinking water vending machines, internet shop, minimart that's open late and happens to have a table outside and also delivers (alcohol+snacks) to their room. Don't give them a reason to spend a single baht elsewhere :o

(And for when they drunkenly spend all their money and can't pay the rent, be the first in on the loan-sharking and pimping. :D )

  6. TOM well I don´t mind which kind of music we are gonna play as long as I can dance...:o

The sentence in our first single about the pink ballet dress refer about the costumes chosen by daleyboy, and the discussion that daleyboy, el energeticón jomtem and me had about who was going to keep such dress... :D

so what kind of music would you like us to play?

Hey, whatever anyone wants to get up to in pink ballet dresses is fine by me :D Only, not all flamenco songs are for dancing to...

(Now let's see if this will work...)

  7. You and I live in a different world :o How have the recent political murmurs affected me? Not at all. I don't frequent bars, but from my friends I gather that the practical situation is that the the rules and enforcement keep varying, just as they've always done. Blocked internet sites? I vaguely remember one of the Geocities-type groups being blocked en-masse once, but that got sorted out. Never encountered a blocked site since then, and I do read online a lot. Forced morality? Well I'm not a paedophile.... I believe the red-light districts continue to operate as normal.

Growing anti-govt. rallies sponsored by wealthy businessmen with competing interests? Yes, it's sad that a naive fraction of the public is being manipulated again. Still, the fact that they continue to take place is proof that the leading party has neither 100% power, nor 100% media control.

The South? It has been linked to almost everything in the last few years. Ethnic tension and terrorism have been a fact of life for most countries since, well, forever.

The frequency of events seems, to me, to be mostly linked to the end of the wet season being a good time to organise demonstrations. The controversial issues being brought up now actually occured quite a while ago.

As to what's really going on, I don't know, and I suspect that very very few people do. One interesting hint is this page explaining factions within Thai Rak Thai. If you've looked at Thai political history, you'll recognise a lot of names.

  8. Flakey Flamenco.

Question, are we talking about flamenco dancing, with the clichéd frilly dresses and colours and stuff? Or are we talking about Camarón de la Isla and woooah-wooah-woooo-ooooo wobbly tearful lamenting and guitarists who understand that you play a lot better while sitting down and not trying to look like Elvis?

  9. Few people in Thailand would have a fast enough internet connection to watch streaming video surely. :o

The slow internet speeds that we are all familiar with, are due to content coming from overseas. The international connection is the bottleneck. Note that many, perhaps even most websites about Thailand are hosted overseas, for various reasons such as reliability, cost, and decent English-speaking technical support. It makes no difference whether your website name is .com or .th - either can be located anywhere in the world.

However if a webmaster plans to stream video to viewers within Thailand, they would be crazy to use a server anywhere other than within Thailand. There are various video-on-demand services available (Thai soundtrack), and I'm told they are actually fairly usable on a True connection.

  10. PM CONFIDENT THAT SUWANNAPHUM AIRPORT WILL BE COMPLETED ON TIME

As for the countdown party at the Suwannaphum airport, the premier said that the size of the party should be scaled back. He said that the number of participants should be reduced from 250,000 to 120,000, so that the party will not be too big.

Source: Thai National News Bureau Public Relations Department - 25 November 2005

Why? So as not to put too much weight on the new runways? :D

    :o:D:D:D

More likely because there are no proper roads or public transport systems to bring them there.

  11. just curious...

I have many friends who own property in thailand.

do you think they should be concerned if a "coup" occurs?

personally, I was thinking of buying a condo here in the near future.  but I'm wondering about the logic of doing that now.

No. Bear in mind that Thailand's economy boomed the strongest while under military dictatorship. Life will go on as normal (unless you're unfortunate or foolish enough to be in the line of fire).

  12. Los Falangs Flamengos

Or even Los Flamingos Falangos Flamengos

Oh yeah......... try saying that really really fast after a few red wines T.O.M (how are ya by the way? Long time no hear!) :D

I.... I... seem to be back in Hong Khlaay Khriat again. Was I away?... Who's this Glauka person that suddenly appeared so prolifically? :DMac, still plodding towards my 500th post.

Someone with very boring job... hoping that it won´t be too long before she can fly away...

    I know, I know I am everywhere...I reproduce by spores... :D:D

Now I have this picture in my head of something like Disney's Fantasia with dancing spores dressed in bright ruffled colored dresses and singing songs from Carmen. :D

No, I never needed LSD. :o

Consider yourself lucky. My mental picture was of Glauka with a queue of S'porean men outside her bedroom door :D

  13. Your prophesy

    Whose "prophesy"?

The "prophesy" that Sondhi has been inciting with public demonstrations for the past 5 weeks?

The "prophesy" that the general Thai public, who shrug off political scandals every day of their life and barely raise an eyebrow over billions misspent on airport equipment, will suddenly get really really upset over an alleged single misuse of a military plane by the PM's daughter, and similar petty nonsense?

The "prophesy" that there might be a coup, which is being announced by the media a week in advance, and yet will somehow reflect the mood of the Thai people which will just happen to reach boiling point tomorrow afternoon in Lumpini, to everyone's undoubted carefully-rehearsed dismay?

Which of course is nothing to do with the fact that the word "coup" is being screamed by the press, despite their apparent lack of freedom?

And we will be asked to believe that this will have happened because the Thai people were seeking justice, and not due to the manipulations of politicians' business interests. And the idealists would put Sondhi/Ekayuth's sponsored candidate into power. And somehow, a coup led by a "media personality", against a leader elected by the majority, would be a victory for democracy? You SHEEP.

  14. 8/16

So, what does that mean? :o

It means you don't look at enough porn. Don't worry, just post your email address in public in this forum, and you'll receive some amazing offers that are Guaranteed to Boost Your Satisfaction, Surprise Your Woman and Make You Feel Like A Real Man Again.

(Which might come as a surprise to you if you thought you were female.)

  15. Ah well fair enough, sounded like you thought they'd gone. Another service did close down a few years ago, due to financial problems.

However things are looking up, at least for transport. The Chao Phraya service is being extended south of Sathorn. There's a new part-river, part-khlong service into Dao Khanong, with similar routes planned for others, and BMA is actually bothering to finance the boats and make vague noises about paying for the piers, instead of leaving it entirely up to private enterprise. I believe they're planning air-con boats for San Saeb. I've seen a few new condo developments where the khlong is presented as a visual feature. I reckon a smart property developer should be hunting down canalside land at the moment...

It's amazing that the Hualampong/Bamglampu route closed, considering its obvious attractiveness to Khao San road tourists. But I don't recall ever seeing a sign from the station, or around Banglampu. You can imagine the logic of the operators - why would tourists want to use smelly old 5B boats instead of those taxis that they can afford to ride in. Someone should really bring it back, charge 50B per trip and spend a bit of cash to keep the signs visible...

  16. It might have been kept as a brilliant way to travel across Bangkok - say from Sukhumvit to Pratunam to Siam Square to near Sanam Luang and Banglampoo, had the pollies taken certain decisions a couple of decades ago to clean it up and put decent boats on it. Sadly, they didn't and now look at the mess its in.  :D

Ah yes, I remember back in the old days when I rode the boat service on khlong Saeb... it must have been way back in, oh, October. :o
