  1. I knew a guy who had been pastoring a church near a busy highway in the US (Interstate 80, in Iowa). He regularly got stories of "my car just broke down, and if you could give/loan me $300 I can make it home to Colorado" or wherever. After a while he hit upon a strategy. He would tell them, "sure, I'll do that. But I have a hedge in back that needs to be trimmed. Will take you about an hour. You trim the hedge, I'll give you the money." He said in 10 years of using that line, the hedge never did get trimmed.

  2. Has to be something "totally sexist" asking for girls rather than just people. Thailand is in the dark ages when it comes to equal opportunities.

Yes, but lets ponder for a second if we want it any other way.

When you visit a restaurant and the person taking your order looks like your typical Walmart Greeter person, then you may well regret what you wish for.

Not sure what a walmart greeter is, but to be honest I'm not bothered who takes the order as I'll be out with the family. If I want to check out "skirt" I can do that at Makro while the mrs is having the veggies weighed thumbsup.gif

You should Google "People of Walmart" to get an idea of the people who shop there, and then understand that there are greeters at the door welcoming these customers.

  3. I think they meant Perfectly Curved girls. Well maybe not, but a man can dream.

This has to be the best option, although sadly, Personal Computer is probably what they meant.

  4. My son was looking for bunk beds, and after a few days of finding nothing, went to a guy that made single beds, and gave him instructions on how to make bunk beds using two of the singles. At the time we were looking, it just seemed like bunking is not something the Thais like to do.

  5. I've read in some other places that putting good strong ammonia into one of those super water guns, and spraying them will leave a very long-lasting impression. Have never tried it myself, but might be worth it -

  6. Good on the Chinese family, guys like him stick in the mind of the Thais and give us all a bad name.

I remember an older member saying he remembers a time when farangs were respected / given respect here, and he lamented that time has long gone, death of 100 million cuts.

My most memorable low level example of farang stupidity this month was watching two muppets trying to drive through Jacks Van bar when it was packed out, Jackie stepped over and tried to shoo them back, not content they put on a stupid grin each and went faster. No hesitation Jackie knocked them off their bike and took the key out of it. Muppets response? " Hey man what did you do that for? "

Maybe we should open a thread for daily stupid farang in Chiang Mai reports.

    Jackie has my vote!

  7. From CMKiwi: "Running red lights is like Russian Roulette, its NOT worth the risk"

It's like Russian Roulette, but the guy holding the gun is pointing it at you, not at himself, and you're not even aware he's got a gun!

  8. These are good posts, and it all makes me wonder...I see dozens of older Thai ladies in the downtown area every day; they don't appear to be too concerned about vehicles around them. So are they also having serious accidents? I haven't been around here long enough to get data on that....

  9. "Why is it that so many Chinese tourists, when given the choice between walking on the sidewalk (pavement) or walking in the middle of the street in the way of motor vehicles, choose to walk in the middle of the f@#$%g street???"

Good question. My first thought was, maybe they were standing behind the door when God was handing out the brains. But no, that's probably not it.

Second thought was, maybe they think they own the place. But no, that's probably not it either.

Third thought was, maybe not very many have been flattened by hit and run drivers...hmmm, maybe that's the reason.

  10. If you end up buying one, and feel so inclined, please post an evaluation after a couple weeks of riding. I'm considering buying one also, and would be interested in your experience.

  11. Why are mackerel and sardines safer than tuna? Dont they both come out of the ocean?

Size and age, innit? Bigger, longer-living fish have more mercury (through pollution from us ahole human beings, typically) as they eat lots of smaller, shorter-living fish that will naturally have less in their system?

I'm curious - do tunas swim around looking for old blood pressure gauges or mercury thermometers? It seems like mercury has been banned nearly as effectively as plutonium. Where do the fish find it?

Good question, I did not know the answer but here is an explanation of Mercury levels in seafood,

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury_in_fish

    very interesting article.

OK - have to answer my own question, using the article thoughtfully provided by scotinsiam: the mercury comes primarily from coal burning power plants. Coal apparently contains mercury, which goes up in smoke, and comes down in rain.

What I really want to know - will beer act as a solvent for mercury, and wash it out?

  13. A list of things to do,

    1. Learn how not to offend.

    2. Be good to others, whether or not they are good to you.

    3. Learn the language and get real Thai friends. You will never understand if you don't.

    4. Don't judge the nation by the actions of a few.

5.Relax. Life happens, role with it. Stop trying to control it.

    +1...especially #5
