  2. Initially I used the self-learning course highspeedthai to learn the alphabet, tone rules, and some vocabulary, and get some listening and shadowing (speaking) practice.

This was to get the basics. From there it was then a matter of talking to as many people as possible (actually being in Thailand helps), and locating people who were willing to trade "I teach you English, you teach me Thai" lessons

and from there reading online newspaper articles in Thai, chatting to Thai friends with instant message apps and on Facebook in Thai, constantly adding new words to one's own electronic flashcard deck and reviewing the deck every day, and diversifying the learning experience as much as possible.

Currently two and a half years in.

  3. yes soi dogs everywhere, and the final solution cannot be implemented as there simply isn't enough rat poison in Tesco giggle.gif so I'll be investing in either a BB gun or a catapult, one of those crossbow things is probably taking it too far.

The crossbow thing is not taking it too far if the dog is going to attack you unprovoked. any animal or human who attacks anyone without provocation, can't complain if they are stopped by the person they are attacking by any method.

They don't attack me, they just bark at me, I think I'll get a BB gun first and consider upgrading if necessary

  4. OK, maybe my OP was too biased and I do agree with some comments about HH getting busier, problems with traffic etc. However, in the wider discussion, no one really came back an viable alternatives to live. Don't fancy Chiang Mai - too much smog during the burning season.

Ok so the question you are asking is "What is the best place FOR ME to live in Thailand?" and to answer that we need to know what you are looking for, and what you are not looking for, and from you opening post and follow up posts it looks like

    want don't want

    beach crime

    restaurants sleaze

    golf air pollution

    nice homes

    affordable

    nightlife

    good schools

    good hospitals

    close to Bangkok

    easy to do visa run

which describes ................ hmmmmmmmm good luck with that wai2.gif

  5. Anyhow, I'm wondering if a place like "Mao Zedong Steam Buns", "Pol Pot Beef Noodles", "Saddam Hussein Kebap", "Josef Stalin Borscht" or "Attila the Hun's Steak Tartare" would've received the same amount of outrage "Hitler Fried Chicken". Honestly, I don't think so, although they were all mass murderers, too, and arguably killed even more people than Hitler.

This reminds me of the time, during the Josef Fritzl trial, that an Austrian café started selling Frtizl Schnitzels as there were so many journalists in town covering the story

    has anybody actually eaten there?

  6. fitness gym? thumbsup.gif

yes, he used to go to the @Letic fitness gym in Hua Hin

Do you think I could get the remaining time on his membership for a discount ;~) ? Wow, I have been here (in Hua Hin) 5 years and don't recall meeting him but I guess I can't meet everyone in town. Makes you wonder if his now "ex-girlfriend" has some money to spend.

One of the many things that gym does not do is discounts wink.png If you were a gym go-er, to that particular gym, then you might have met him, but as you apparently are not, you didn't.
