  1. Note this was not a stray dog but an owned dog, although as usual the alarm bells ring about stray dogs that generally do not approach people. This dog was doing what owned dogs do and protecting its owners property. The problem here is owners who allow their dogs to free roam. Statistically the vast majority of dog bites here are caused in this manner. Owners need to take responsibility and ensure their dogs are kept secure and exercise them responsibly.

  2. A number of points here. Very few airlines allow dogs in cabin and must be able to fit in an underseat cage. Anything bigger than a Chihuahua forget it. In reality the dog will go to sleep in the climate controlled section of the hold. The dog must be vaccinated against rabies and microchipped at least 1 month before travel and have a medical certificate. Note that bull terriers other than English Staffordshire terriers are banned. It is generally far cheaper to take the dog as accompanied baggage. You can send by cargo but very expensive now that cargo rates generally have gone through the roof. In terms of age you do not need to worry about that. Although not required for travel ensure your dog is vaccinated against the usual canine diseases particularly distemper which is common here. The reason there is no requirement for vaccination against diseases other than rabies is because only rabies can be transmitted to humans.

  3. Hopefully they will visit Phuket Zoo and shut that down. Phuket for its size must have more attractions exploiting wildlife per square mile than anywhere else on earth. Besides the deplorable zoo we have monkey shows, crocodile shows, snake shows, tiger kingdom, dolphinarium not to mention the countless elephant rides, Phuket Fantasea, Siam Niramit and of course the many photographers offering photos with drugged up endangered species.

The saddest thing are the dumb tourists who keep it all going.

  4. The owners of the dog should be prosecuted and the dog euthanised in a case like this. However the reporting and comment by the singer are inaccurate. No stiff penalties have been handed out in cases of animal cruelty. The rice seller referred to actually received 2 months "detention" which he was allowed to serve at home! His son deliberately provoked the dog who gave hm a nip back in self defence. Not quite the same thing.

Most dog attacks here are blamed on stray dogs. The reality is figures show that virtually all are by owned dogs who are not contained in their property, attacking people who come close to the property. It is down to the owners to contain and control their dogs.

  5. What with the notorious Phuket Zoo, Tiger Kingdom, Phuket Fantasea and now a Dolphinarium, coupled with photographers offering photos with illegal wildlife and all the elephant rides and other animal shows, Phuket has become the capital of animal exploitation. This is a welcome addition to the Soi Dog Foundation and the Gibbon rehabilitation project, in showing how animals should be treated. A shame that tourists don't visit and donate to these rather than continuing to encourage the exploitation and often cruelty of animals there.

  6. How anybody on this page can try and justify such actions under any circumstances leave me lost for words! It is a fact that those who abuse animals often go on to abuse people as well. How people control or don't control their pets is another topic entirely. The fact is this guy will get off with a fine and short suspended sentence despite publicly stating he will kill the dog out of revenge for being reported to the police. The good news is that Soi Dog Foundation have apparently moved the dog to a specialist clinic, and if survives is apparently suitable for prosthetics which they will cover costs of.

  7. Re. I am more interested in seeing more done for the protection for animals in the wild where populations are suffering through habitat destruction and poaching.

The two are inextricably linked. The reason there is hardly any wildlife left in the forests is that they have been poached both for the tourist trade and the Chinese medicine trade. Baby elephants are now being poached from Myanmar to satisfy tourist demand. Despite efforts by the current government corruption remains the biggest problem. Endangered species and their parts are smuggled across the Mekong River daily, particularly in Nong Kai and Nakhon Phanom provinces. How does this happen? The commanding officers of the agencies employed to stop the trade are paid off. The profits in wildlife, drugs and dogs are huge. Straight officers are warned off interfering by their superiors. That information comes directly from the Navy's Mekong River unit officers and border police and livestock officials. In Thailand you don't have to look hard in any tourist resort to see photographers offering tourists the opportunity to have their photo taken with a wide variety of protected species. More warning signs should be placed in airports and in resorts advising people not to encourage these people. The police and armed forces need to get trusted commanders on the border to stamp out the smugglers. Maybe form a special unit to control the border who are only answerable to Bangkok.

  8. Re. He paid 1.2 million Baht + an additional 100k Baht (cremation fee) to the dead thugs mother for the new "video footage"

Would seem very plausible with the police negotiating the deal and receiving a % of the compensation. Similar thing happened to me following a road accident which was my fault and victim suffered serious injuries. Many years ago and I arranged private medical treatment which saved his life. Later with police a financial agreement was reached which led to no charges being made against me. My Thai lawyer advised that police would take cut but that was hearsay as passed money directly to victim at police station and did not see any money change hands at that time and I did not give any money to the police. Although the motor cyclist was not wearing a helmet and riding at high speed with no lights at night, nevertheless although were mitigating circumstances fact is I should have been charged but was not.

In the case being discussed there is no doubt that Mr.Pendlebury would have been charged in the West even if not for murder, What charge would be up to police and the relevant prosecution department. Appears Thai police take the view that if compensation paid and everybody happy then that is best solution which does have merit. However is it justice? If Mr. Pendlebury did not have any money am sure would have been prosecuted.

  9. Yet again I am impressed by the General. He knows the scope of his powers and what he can and cannot do with them. The Thai people have a choice, stick with the general for a while longer in the hope that he can start to solve some of Thailand's deeply engrained problems, or have quick elections and see life return to normal and everything can carry on as before.

Totally agree. The average Thai is far more intelligent than the average poster on this forum. Thailand was heading for civil war and corruption was going through the roof. Will take many years to put everything right here but the General has made a good start in my opinion, and appears the vast majority of Thai people which is what counts agree.

  10. Re. Irrational fear of the bloodiest, most murderous ideology in human history? Don't forget that the Khmer Rouge were the creation of Hanoi and Beijing.

That is absolute rubbish. Chinese and Vietnamese were the most persecuted minorities in Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge years. Was the Vietnamese who eventually invaded and kicked the Khmer Rouge out and suffered years of sanctions by the US and others as a result. The West were not that interested as no financial incentive to get involved in Cambodia.

  11. A tour guide in Bangkok who takes tourists there told me if you go behind the temple you can see the head monks shiny top of the range Mercedes. Thailand is known to be a major supplier of tigers and tiger parts to the Chinese market. Those in the know have been saying for years that this place is heavily involved in the illegal trade. Should be shut down and all the animals there confiscated. Why were officials denied entrance if nothing to hide?

  12. Excellent article. To follow your advice to the letter though would mean avoiding this forum! Regrettably it a magnet for the negative people you describe. Of course living here is not the same as coming on holiday, but the same applies to any country. In terms of development Thailand is still a young country, and if you come here expecting it to run the same as your home country you are going to be disappointed. Embrace all the advantages of living here and learn to put up with the disadvantages. To me the former outweighs the latter otherwise would be somewhere else, so those who say if you don't like it leave have a good point. Nobody is forcing you to live here. Anybody retiring here should first just rent a property and a car etc., and check out for sure this is the place for them.

  13. Road safety is desperately in need of improvement. The number of times I have seen shunts because bollards have been put on the main highway without any warning for oncoming traffic is ridiculous. This particular incident is horrendous. A huge hole on a dark road with no warning. As I recall a motorbike went down the same hole previous to this accident. Whether or not she was wearing a seat belt is masking the cause. Hard to imagine what the damages would be if this occured in the West. Not that damages will bring this little girl's life back but would send a message to the authorities.

  14. Yes but this family will actually look after the dogs, unlike here, were they are barley fed, allowed to roam the streets, and bark and howl all damn night.

And bite people as happened to the mrs yesterday and four others by the same dog. These cute dog stories make me puke, they do nothing to address to soi dog problem at all, unless about another 500,000 do gooders are going to adopt the rest of the vermin. Lets just hope this dog does not rip the kids face off.

As it says in the story dogs are unique in their ability to read human emotions. They clearly weighed you up accurately. Statistically nearly all dog bites in Thailand are by owned dogs, protecting they think their property. Is the owners not keeping them securely in their premises who are to blame.

  15. I am no lawyer and no idea whether manslaughter or different degrees of murder exist in Thailand. The fact that he was in possession of an offensive weapon, and killed another person with it even if being attacked, would undoubtedly lead to a murder charge in UK, though may well eventually be reduced to manslaughter in the courts. There have been a few cases of people killing burglars over the years, and still charged with murder, though generally reduced to manslaughter in court or on appeal.

Clearly this not premeditated but at same time if had not been carrying a weapon would not have happened.
