  1. Nok Air's safety record is fine. By contrast, 1-2-Go and its parent Orient Thai have long had a terrible reputation among pilots and aviation professionals, long before the crash at Phuket.

Unfortunately, with soaring fuel prices, some low cost carriers are losing money with every flight. So it makes sense to ground their less economical aircraft, lay off personnel, keep only a shoestring service in operation and wait for better times.

  2. You think all the taxi's arriving in Pattaya/Hua Hin have meters on? Maybe 1 in 1000 does...

Bangkok taxis do not use their metres for trips outside the Bangkok metropolitan area - which DOES include Nonthaburi, Samut Phrakan and Thonburi.

get out of the rear passenger door and leave it open, also leave the boot (trunk) open if you take bags out - it really @*#'s them off as they have to get out to close it!

Then you better make sure you're not standing in the middle of a soi with all your bags when that antagonized driver gets out out his cab...

  3. 10 to 12 beers on a night out is far too much carb and alcohol at one time, especially for a diabetic. When they say two beers a day, they mean a modest amount on a daily basis, not abstaining for the whole week and then going on a bender which puts your pancreas, kidneys and liver to the test. At the very least switch to a light beer like San Miguel Lite, but you really need to think about switching to a non-alcoholic, non-sweetened drink after your requisite two brews. Just sip a soda water to be sociable.

And you need to go back to that hospital ASAP and get an appointment with a nutritionist who can advise you on a rational diet plan and lay down the rules on alcohol, sweets and exercise to get your diabetes (and weight) under control. You're courting full-blown diabetes and all its highly unpleasant possible complications: diabetic retinopathy (loss of vision), loss of limbs due to circulation problems, erectile dysfunction, heart disease, kidney failure, stroke to name a few. But the good news is, it IS controllable, but not without lifestyle changes.

  4. Considering that Mick Jagger is 65, Paul Anka at 67 is not all that old. He does seem to have been around forever, though maybe because he had his first mega-hit, Diana (one of the best selling singles of all time) at age 16. Al Jarreau is 68. George Benson is 65.

While you may characterize them as "geezers" none of them are "crooners" which is a specific style of vocal technique. Anybody who likes jazz vocal knows Benson and Jarreau as stylists. Benson is a great jazz guitarist. I'd say there are plenty of fans of mainstream jazz in Bangkok who know their work and would pay 5000 baht to attend a concert.

  5. Valium is a muscle relaxant and it'll put you to sleep for sure if you're not habituated to it. It will also make you wake up very woozy and thick-headed, particularly if you combine it with alcohol (whic is in any case not at all a good idea). 5mg should be sufficient dosage for any adult.

The reason I like, first of all, sleeping most of the flight away, and secondly, using my non-benzodiazepine sleep aid to get there, is that after my frequent 12 hour flights I arrive in Thailand sharp as a tack without any hang-over, ready to face the onslaught of immigration line-ups, taxi touts and whatever else, well rested and 100 percent in control. Even the crappy airline breakfast over the Bay of Bengal tastes great for some reason.

(I truly hope I don't snore but I do often wake up with a dry mouth, which may not be a good sign.)

  6. There are quite a few Thai dishes which are not so spicy, ranging from the ubiquitous noodle soup (at thousands of noodle stands, everywhere) to rice soup (breakfast), to stir-fried vegetables in oyster sauce, to chicken with cashews, to pad thai. But if you make some effort, you can quickly get accustomed to spicier dishes, and then the full range of Thai cuisine in all its glory will become accessible to you.

  7. Sananwan Palace, very nice and friendly almost-new guesthouse about 20 min by taxi from the terminal, with pool under 500 Baht. My personal favourite. This thread has some of my pictures.

S.P. Power Lodge A/C, sat TV, 1300-1900 baht, airport transfers included.

Convenient Resort. Newly-built 4-story hotel at Lat Krabang, about 5-10 min. drive from the airport. 1000-1200 baht.

Floral Shire Resort is just on the edge of the airport, maybe 5 minutes from the terminal. 1200-1300 baht. Brand new. No pool. Sort of motel style.

Queen's Garden Resort only 5 - 10 min. from the airport. No pool. 900 baht.

Grand Inn Come, sort of a typical Thai small-town hotel on a noisy street, no pool, 20 min. from airport, 1800 baht. "Let out professional masseuses treat and pamper your stiff and stressed."

Avana Hotel, sort of the kind of suburban upscale hotel where Thais hold weddings and conferences. Pool and all the usual amenities, 1200 baht. Maybe about 25-30 min. from the airport.

Ibis Hua Mak Chain hotel about 20 min from the airport with reportedly small boxy rooms. Pool, 800-1200 baht.

Rachana Place, a hostel off the Bangna-Trat highway AWAY from the city centre, self-described 25 min. from the airport, 350 baht. Free WiFi.

On Nut Guest House, backpacker hostel about 35-40 min. from the airport and within walking distance of the end station of the Skytrain/BTS line.

Nasa-Vegas Hotel, many recommend. Said to be 15-25 min. from the airport. 590 baht, 900 baht rooms have a jacuzzi. No pool.

  8. Don't they have modern non-benzodiazepine sleep aids in Thailand? Like Ambien (Zolpidem), Sonata (Zaleplon)

    or Lunesta (Eszopiclone)?

I've been taking Zopiclone on occasion due to sleeping problems because of shift work and it's great. On the plane it lulls me off nice and easy and when I wake up, we're already over the Bay of Bengal. And no hang over.

Once when I was having trouble sleeping while in Thailand, I was at Bumrungrad for another reason and I asked the doctor for something to help me sleep. He gave me Xanax. I thought that was for anxiety disorders. I hadn't remembered the name of Zopiclone or any of the other modern drugs, but it didn't seem they had or knew of any other drugs than Xanax. I took them a couple times and then threw them away. Not a good feeling.

  9. Ruenhor Restaurant, 6 Pahonyothin Soi 9 Tel: 270-1431. Near Sanam Pao BTS station.

In the night market on Sukhukmvit soi 38, the last eatery on the right as you head down from the mouth of the soi has excellent and inexpensive dim sum and jok (rice congee).

  10. If you don't contact them "maybe" they will contact you, do you think ??

Don't count on it. They cancelled a flight to Krabi I was booked on last year - dropped the entire service at that time off their schedule, and never even contacted me. I found out through this forum that the service was cancelled. I got on the phone to the call centre - not even an apology.

  11. Bangkok Airport/Pattaya approx. 130 Km : Baht 1.300,- including 50 Baht tax.

    Frankfurt Airport/Hotel 12 Km : Euro 28,- = Baht 1.450,- not including tip.

However, in Frankfurt, you'd probably be taking the train into Hbf and then only a short hop to your hotel by taxi. What would that cost? I don't know Frankfurt prices. In Berlin it would be € 2.10 for the train, then maybe € 6 for the taxi depending on where the hotel is. So €10, 500 baht, let's say.

  12. Bang Phli Yai is 20 minutes from Suvarnabhumi at a cost of about 130 baht, if I recall correctly (plus 50 baht airport surcharge). Are you going to the Sananwan Palace? If so, just say "Wat Bang Plee Yai, Luang Pho Tho." When the temple comes in to sight, watch out for the Sananwan Palace sign on the left. Then it's a left turn down a side soi (lane) about maybe 200 metres. ALL taxi drivers know where Bang Phli Yai is, and the Luang Pho Tho is a revered religious image known throughout Thailand. If you don't feel confident about this, the Sananwan will pick you up at a cost of 500 baht.
