You're a border line case as far as their SETV policy is concerned, so if I were you, I'd give it a shot since you are in Savannakhet anyway.

Do you have any previous Thai stamps in your passport before arriving in October?

Please report back how it goes!

I current passport is issued Dec 2015 and I have been visiting Thailand 1-2 times pr year and spending 2-3 months pr year in the country. No visas though, just VE and extensions and a couple of visruns in Mae Sai.

I suggest you at least try in Savannakhet since you have already been out of the country for some time now. Most people that apply there have just left Thailand to do the application.

It should no be a problem in Vientiane with your history. Just checked on the Vientiane appointment website and their are appointments available for tomorrow and the rest of this week and next as well. See: https://thaivisavientiane.com/

    Thanks for answer Ubonjoe.

About the Vientiane embassy - do tjey demand the same things that the consulate in Savannakhet?

I was at Savannakhet in November 2019. There were 8 people applying for visas. Two non o's and six SETV.

Only the non o's were granted. One person turned down for 90 days in Thailand already.

    Good Luck

OMG - so it means Im not likely to get a visa there.....

How about Vientiane? Is it difficult to get a visa there and how long is the appointment line ftm?

An air ticket is not needed. A recent bank statement showing the equivalent of at least 20,000 baht is definitely needed. They may well want to see a hotel reservation (easily made and later cancelled). Even with that, there is no guarantee that you will get your visa. Over the last year or so, Savannakhet has been very reluctant to issue tourist visas, except to those with very little previous recent time in Thailand. Since you will be there anyway, it makes sense to try. Good luck!

    Thanks for answer, much appriciated.

Bank statement - like a letter from my bank, or just a print of my bank-account current status?

  5. Hi guys

So I have been staying 90 days in Thailand from late October last year with a SETV from my home country (Norway) and an extension of that.

I exited Thailand to Laos on the last day of my valid visa extension (27th Janury) and have been travelling around in Laos since. Tomorrow I will be in Savannakhet and the day after I will try to apply for a new SETV at the consulate there.

I just read on the thai consulates website and the requirements there that I need money or a bank statement of 20 000 baht and an air ticket booking out of Thailand.
Are these requirements really enforced at the consulate?

    Thanks in advance!

  6. I was at a government hospital in Mae Hong Son once - took all kinds of tests and saw two different doctors - and I paid only for the medication.

Been to privat hospitals a few times because of ear infection problems and the doctor once prescribed seven - 7 - different medications...???? (something a doc back home usually prescribe one - 1 medication only) and charged a hefty consultation fee as well. Private hospitals - no-njet-nein - I rather not.

Robberies of tourists are very common, scam taxi drivers are everywhere and half the time you won't get the correct change back from a shop. It is truly a den of thieves. Maybe you don't see this if you stay in five star hotels and book package tours but that's not the kind of trip the OP has in mind.

Personally I'm not a big fan of the backpacker aspect of Vang Vieng but it seems that is exactly what the OP is looking for.

Very true indeed! I have travelled almost all over Asia and HCMC is the Satans Anus of this part of the world. I would estimate that 90 % out of all money transactions included a scam in one way or another. Taxi drivers are so bad I nearly attacked one physically. Do yourself a favour - Dont go there!!!

One the other hand - Northern Laos loop was mentioned above. And that is a fantastic place to go. Take a bus from CM to Chiang Khong. Then the boat from there to Luang Prabang, not the rapid one, the slow overnight one. Spend a few days in Luang Prabang, then you can travel on to Phonsavan (Plain of Jars) and spend a day or two there, then to Vang Vieng if you like and spend a couple of days there, then Vientiane. Spend some days in the Laotian capital, get a tourist visa for Thailand and your ready to go back again. Cross over to Nong Khai and take a bus to Udon Thani - from where you can take bus or plane directly back to CM. You can also spend time in Nong Khai and Udon of course. I like both places...

I wasted much more money on my cold English wife, than I ever did on prostitutes and booze in Chiang Mai.

If I were able to live my life again it'd be more hookers/booze and drugs, and I'd give the English wife a total miss.

The good things in life are free you know...?

Not really your business what other people do with their money is it? Whatever your experiences have been? "Many a poor guy has wasted heaps of money". Not wasted if he was having a good time.  Why deny to others or criticise a lifestyle choice you, on your own admittance, once embraced? Sounds a bit hypocritical to me. Just saying.

Did you miss the OP? He claimed he was scammed and ripped off at a karaoke bar, and the money were spent on boose an prostitutes. Something which is far from unknown if you indulge with such things. It is very more likely to happen if you indulge with such things than if you play golf or go for a jog.

Thats the facts which I pointed out. It has nothing to do with moral or etichs.

And if he and his mates were having a good time and felt they had value for money so to speak I think he wouldnt have bothered starting this topic on this forum. Or what do you think?

Sex workers and booze usually go hand in hand. You are giving a moral judgement reflecting your own prejudices not an accurate assessment.

Absolutely not. The fact that many a poor guy has wasted heaps of money on prostituts and booze, actually much more than needed if ya know what I mean isnt not exactly rocket science. I know that very well myself from experience so absolutely now predudices involved here, just pure knowledge. Ask any sailor will ya...

Bult luckily I have learned ? Hopefully TS has too...?

  11. I did my visa-run yesterday. Getting to Mae Sai and back was the worst part. The traffic is horrendous up north, and long stretches of roadworks so only one lane useable.

I spent 2-3 minutes in Myanmar. Border officials was polite and helpful. They even gave a huge smile and a thumbs up when they saw I had written my thai adress in thai letters. Didnt have to show any money and didnt have to show airtickets out of the country either....
