Who is gonna visit all these bars then?
-
To cut away from it all like that, sell house and other valuables and leave it all behind - is not such a good idea for many obvious reasons.
What he should donis to rent out his house for a year or two and try to live in Thailand. Maybe the hot season isnt so great after all? Maybe the rainy season too? Maybe going out «for a couple of beers» every night turns into addiction? Maybe «rented female company» isnt the answer to his lonliness?
Maybe money spending goes faster than he thought? (doesnt it always for the majority of us?)
And if being lonely in his own country is his major problem, how about lonliness in a totally strange country where hardly anyone speaks english to the extend that you can have a meaningful conversation with?
At least dont burn all bridges, give it a try for a year or two and see how that goes.I have a friend with similar ideas, he wasnt lonely though, he is married to a thai woman and they have two children. They moved to Thailand and tried to settle there. Luckily they just rented out the house for a year at the time. But they came back after 8-9 months and had to spend a few months in his mothers cramped flat. At least they could move into their old house after those months and they had some of their ecpenses covered by the rent...

isnt this the building where the old time pub/bar was in?
looks like itYes it is/was. Its the «Crossroads» - just in the heart of Mae Hong Son. (Just like the text above says...????)
A very popular waterhole amongst tourists and bikers in Mae Hong Son.
Sad to see it go in this dramatic way...

So she has lived 100 % off you for 2,5 years and now she wants even more?
Give them an inch and they take a mile.... -
I took the Greenbus from Lampang to Chiang Mai yesterday. No problem at all. No checkpoint between Lampang and Lamphun on the R11 but there were a checkpoint between Lamphun and C M province border. They just waved vehicles through as far as I could see though.
Got a questionaire on the bus about my health situation and personal information - but the bus hostess did not want it back and nobody else wanted it (sic)
Several domestic flights out of CNX yesterday, at least 3 left in an hour or so while I sat there.

Yes the final solution - shoot the starving and remove those problems....????

Yes it was GTRider where i saw it but i'd missed that quote ... which looks a bit gloomy. This visa bounce stuff is new to me but i gather each crossing is likely to have different and ... er ... interesting rules ... like the year-long motorbike ban apparently in force at this particular crossing 2016-17. True?
... and that “open” again for exit & entry (only if you enter via a Lao tour company.) confuse me ... do you all think that means (1) "only motorbikes allowed in as part of a group" or (2) "only tourists allowed in as part of a group" or (3) something else?
I understand why they may or may not decide to dish out a visa on arrival, but a motorbike ban ... is that a smuggling deterrent?
Sorry to spawn three more questions from one answer but that's the way threads and viruses thrive ...
Any of the bordercrossings from Thailand into the Xayabouri province of Laos have been a nogo for thai plated motorbikes for some years now. If I remember correct there were some riders that did something that upset the head of immigration in that province, ran away from an accident or something like that.
Actually the only bordercrossings Thailand to Laos thats doable for the moment for thai plated motorbikes are Chiang Khong-Huay Xai or Nong Khai-Vientiane (friendship bridge 1) If youre bike is in the system and you meet a custom officer in a good mood you might be able to enter Laos though a few other bc but thats quite accidental.
But these things change ever so often so to get the very latest news about this its better to ask on GTRiders forum or Rideasia forum.-

Not only british ; every people from " EU-27 " have lost more than 30% since about 10 years .
Even Norvegian people lost much and yet they don't have euro currency
Around 2006 we got 6,5 baht to the NOK (norwegian krone) Nowadays we get 3.30 - go figure!
Even in 2014 we got + 5 baht to a NOK. Last half of 2014 the big drop started...
Regards a Norwegian...

Du er Norsk? If I remember, so assume same type of passpt as EU.
Well-those first 2 pages are/were always special for any notes/restrictions (in the distant past even for adding kids) your OWN govmt. may add, so thats probably the reason why they feel a bit reluctant to use those for their Thai stamps/stickers. I dk details about NO, but there often were even such wordings on top of those pages. Is it due for renewal soon now?
OK then, sa det ska bra. Sedan trevilg resan.
Ja det står jo ganske klart hvor jeg kommer fra under bildet mitt...????
Anyhow - you might be right about those visa pages. First there is the cover, which is page 1. Then the inside of the cover which is page 2 and then page 3. Number 2 and 3 are almost blank and doesnt have a number. Then comes side 4 and 5 with the actual info about the passport holder (me) and then the actual visa pages starts after that with big numbered pages. And it is these actual visa pages that both page 1 and 2 where left blank.
Anyhow - fingers crossed....

What do you mean by "a lot of discussion" ?
Sounds a bit ominous. What sort of questions did they ask ?
They didnt ask me any questions. What they discussed is hard to tell, but obviously something about my previous stays in Thailand, counting the days I have been in Laos etc. There was also an issue about my passport as there are only 2 blank pages left, and they are the 2 first pages in my passport. (The first stamper started on page 3 for some unknown reason...)

Update: Just been at the consulate in Savannakhet and handed in my application for a SETV. After a lot of discussion they accepted it, I guess thats a good sign...? I mean if there have been something they didnt accept about my application and documentation - they wouldnt have accepted my application at all I guess?
Well - I just have to wait until tomorrow at 2 pm and see what happens...fingers ????

You're a border line case as far as their SETV policy is concerned, so if I were you, I'd give it a shot since you are in Savannakhet anyway.
Do you have any previous Thai stamps in your passport before arriving in October?
Please report back how it goes!
I current passport is issued Dec 2015 and I have been visiting Thailand 1-2 times pr year and spending 2-3 months pr year in the country. No visas though, just VE and extensions and a couple of visruns in Mae Sai.

I suggest you at least try in Savannakhet since you have already been out of the country for some time now. Most people that apply there have just left Thailand to do the application.
It should no be a problem in Vientiane with your history. Just checked on the Vientiane appointment website and their are appointments available for tomorrow and the rest of this week and next as well. See: https://thaivisavientiane.com/
Thanks for answer Ubonjoe.
About the Vientiane embassy - do tjey demand the same things that the consulate in Savannakhet?

I was at Savannakhet in November 2019. There were 8 people applying for visas. Two non o's and six SETV.
Only the non o's were granted. One person turned down for 90 days in Thailand already.
Good Luck
OMG - so it means Im not likely to get a visa there.....
How about Vientiane? Is it difficult to get a visa there and how long is the appointment line ftm?

An air ticket is not needed. A recent bank statement showing the equivalent of at least 20,000 baht is definitely needed. They may well want to see a hotel reservation (easily made and later cancelled). Even with that, there is no guarantee that you will get your visa. Over the last year or so, Savannakhet has been very reluctant to issue tourist visas, except to those with very little previous recent time in Thailand. Since you will be there anyway, it makes sense to try. Good luck!
Thanks for answer, much appriciated.
Bank statement - like a letter from my bank, or just a print of my bank-account current status?

Hi guys
So I have been staying 90 days in Thailand from late October last year with a SETV from my home country (Norway) and an extension of that.
I exited Thailand to Laos on the last day of my valid visa extension (27th Janury) and have been travelling around in Laos since. Tomorrow I will be in Savannakhet and the day after I will try to apply for a new SETV at the consulate there.
I just read on the thai consulates website and the requirements there that I need money or a bank statement of 20 000 baht and an air ticket booking out of Thailand.
Are these requirements really enforced at the consulate? Thanks in advance!

NO! That would be waaay too easy for this guy. Let him rot for 50 painful year in a buginfested <deleted>hole of a prison where the others prisoners could rape him with knifes on a daily basis...
Justice minister suggests Thai prisons could become tourist attractions

Thats great! I suggest the next tourist attractions of Thailand to be some of the U-turns along the busiest roads in Thailand. They could advert something like this:
REAL traffic accidents - watch them live from your airconditioned van. Watch motorbike drivers without helmets and other safety features be crushed by speeding pick up truck with drunk drivers.
Satisfaction guarantee - if you dont happen to witness an accident you will get your money back!
