  1. I have never had any problems 1st account opened about 11 years ago, cheque account + ATM, Bangkok Bank in 2003 with Be 1st Visa ATM, 2006 Deposit account,........... last week SCB because I wanted a different account for transfers, took in my Thai Driver Licence and 500 baht, no problem, Big C at Bang Yai. Only went in to see what was needed to open an account, so of course did not have my Passport as that it something I never carry.

It's near Big King Department Store Rattanathibet.
  2. The head of the Thai paint industry is blustering back "there should be tighter controls on the raw materials that are imported." Well who but him is in charge of that? What a preposterous response from an industry leader. He wants "them" to clamp down on the raw materials his industry members import and use in their production. What an ass backward way to think about an imminent problem for kindergarden age children in Thai schools. He really cares about the children sidestepping the problem.

And this comes as a surprise? I would expect nothing more from a govt. official.

When are the Thai people going to wake up and realize the govt. cares nothing for you or for your children; unless of course you are politically powerfull or wealthy; of whose children certainly do not attend such schools.

    I agree with you there.
  3. Mine is a home phone line and have used D-link and Lynksys but find TP-Link has been much better - especially at reconnecting after a sync loss. It also runs cool (unlike the others) with heavy usage.

What are the models of your Linksys and TP-Link routers?

I have a TOT home phone line, and a separate 3BB internet line. Why is it(?) necessary to have a separate land (home) phone line in order to have this 3BB connection?

    What are 'sync' losses?

Seems to me that 3BB has a direct connection to the Internet compare to TOT which needs to go through a normal telephone line (ADSL). This is why 3BB Internet is quicker than TOT Internet btw.

Technically there is no reason why ADSL is or isn't on the same line as the phone, rather it is commercial reasons. TOT and TRUE are both phone providers and ISP's whereas 3BB is only an ISP so they can only offer "naked ADSL" which is still transmitted over an ordinary copper pair. As long as the cabling is done properly it doesn't make any difference to the quality of the ADSL signal whether there is a phone connected or not because they use completely different frequencies.

I see. Thank you for telling me.

  5. Get asus rt-n66u for 5800 baht. it has very fast cpu and ram. 15-20 users not a problem.

Can you tell me where I can buy an Asus RT-n66 router?

I am also looking for an Asus RT-n56 and a Linksys E4200 v.2 router.

Yes because apart from the stability benefits of isolating the ADSL function, many prefer to use 3rd party firmware like DD-WRT or Tomato and they don't support ADSL or devices with ADSL built in.

.... any recent DLink will support all ADSL modulation types including ADSL2+ (annex M). They should sync at about 20% higher than the ISP's package speed and the ADSL statistics page will show you not only the actual sync speed but also the "attainable" speed which it has calculated from SNR & line attenuation. That's useful because then you can be pretty sure that the speed you are getting is limited only by the DSLAM not by poor line conditions.

You can buy the ASUS RT-N66 Router at Pantip Plaza Pratunam or IT Mall Fortune Town.

Can you list the link to the ADSL statics page. Does it calculate the line speed in real time?

  6. Just to share experiences on a couple of points above:

Standard Chartered, UOB and now CIMB have sort of a hybrid status. They have many of the rights of Thai banks, but still have a couple of restrictions, that "real" Thai banks don't necessarily have.

My Stan Chart account is accepted by immigration. The lady at immigration did ask why I banked with them though! On a bad day, I guess you could also get one that takes it a step further and wants to see a "real Thai" bank account, and imposes their own (incorrect) interpretation.

No you don't need a work permit to open a bank account, although it helps with staff of the bank who don't understand the rules. A non-immigrant visa with longer term (annual) extension will usually be enough, eg extension based on Thai wife or retirement.

So I guess you could say "there are rules, and then there are what people think or decide are rules" (including unfortunately sometimes the staff dealing with your bank account or immigration application on a particular day)...

    Exactly.
  7. It does look nice.

But not as nice as the MAS 380 that has been coming to London for several weeks already. SIAs livery is already getting tired but they have three coming in here every day and want another slot. Who dared has already won. Also the Thai livery is the same as painted on that tired old 747 they had the gall to fly me to London on two weeks ago when they'd promised an A340. The brand is trashing itself which seems to be a popular game in Thailand right now.

I really like the MAS A380 Interior even though I can't wait to see how's the Thai A380 Interior looks like btw.
  8. I had to wait until expiry of my 1 year license before changing to the 5 year one, I was told can renew up to 30 days after expiry,, after 30 and up to 60 days after expiry of the 1 year license can still renew but have to pay a small fee, that was according to my local office,,, however a mate of mine was over the 30 days in Pattaya and he had to do part of the test again,,, par for the course here, inconsistency

    ='jbrain'

There is just one thing you have to keep in mind as you are entitled for a 5 year license this time, but I'm confused about the rule so someone with knowledge can jump in.

It is either that you have to wait untill the 1 year license has been expired by at least one day, or just the oppossite and have to renew it before the expiry date.

I think it is the first option, but probably someone will corrrect me

Sent from my iPhone using ThaiVisa app

You can apply for the 5 year license up to 2 months before your 1 year license expires.
  9. i recently opened bank account at Kasikorn Bank, Chumphon Town. I was a bit nervous because there is only one in the town, but they make that one fully staffed. Several tellers and customer service desks open, but every station was full. They use that automated queuing system, but still had to wait maybe 1/2 hour to be served as there were several people in front. Had gf with me, but no requirement to show anything other than passport. (no work permit or any additional documentation requested from me or gf; they did not make a copy of my visa page either and didn't seem to be concerned about what visa I had). Standard 500 deposit minimum + 300 for visa debit card. I also got a second account with no atm card attached as part of the strategy to keep funds extra secure with ability to move funds quickly between atm vs non atm account.

With the debit card, i ended up getting the K-Max debit card for an additional 550 (per year) that includes the 5,000 baht accident insurance. Apparently there is no limit to the number of accidents you are allowed to have. If purchased separately, it is 2500 bt for the accident insurance. The rep tried to sell me the 2500 bt one, and I had to say it was only 500 baht. She did some checking with another rep and they confirmed that it is 550 when you do it in conjunction with a [new] debit card (I could not confirm for existing debit card holders.

The applications that they had appear to be 100% thai, so I do the 'sign only at the bottom' thing and they fill in the blanks. Make sure to check the printed application carefully before signing it. That one has your information pre-filled. Make sure things like your name are spelled correctly. she wrote the address in thai, so I have no idea how online purchases will go.

Internet banking and sms alerts can be signed up via ATM. You must wait 24 hours before getting your login pin, I guess to prevent fraud. I hope that is only for the first service. I'm guessing I may still have to have the second account manually added to the internet banking. One tip is to sign up for a bundle package; it might save you time (k-cyber banking + mobile banking + spending alerts + virtual spend card. It seems like every service is treated separately smile.png

A couple of things to look out for: they did not have a single pamphlet in english. I guess that's every thai bank i remember

now that I think about it, tourist area or not. Only the brand name of the product is in english. The queuing system and most of the signs were dual language, though. I remember the bangkok bank has many account related forms and some pamphlets in dual language.

K-bank seems to have a culture of its own that doesn't feel strictly like a bank. It could be the color scheme and layout of some of the furniture that seemed cozy. Maybe it was the representatives were more lively that normal. There were several only in k-bank t-shirt and jeans. Maybe it was that one (or two) in the tight lace mini skirt conveniently walking around couriering documents and stuffgiggle.gif . Their flat screen tvs advertise various financial service products and even show some movie clips/skits. I guess the point is that it wasn't as boring as a trip to the bank normally is. Most other thai banks I go into it's much more machine-like atmosphere. This is not a bad thing per-say (after all, it's a bank).

No freebies for opening the account. Bangkok bank gave me a bag and TMB gave me an umbrella. Is that only in tourist areas? or seasonal?

Took about 1/2 hour to setup everything once we got to a representative: 2 savings accounts, one with k-max card with accident insurance.

It's not only in tourist areas or seasonal, It's normal for the Bank Branch to give the customer a complimentary gift after they opening the account with them.

Big sigh, no it's normal to recieve a gift every time you open a new bank account!

OK I get your point. It's only happens if the Bank opens a new branch at a Shopping Center for example and you opened Fixed Account 100,000 Baht and up, then they give you a complimentary gift.

  11. The heaviness caused by Ghee is the real reason I think for Thai's that have tried what passes as Indian food in the restaurants around the world. The fact that this food is basically Bangladeshi though (the thick heavy ghee soaked sauces) and not Indian does prompt me to say that actually when my Thai ex wife and my thai gf try real Indian food they have enjoyed it. They do not like the stodgy oily gunk though that is quite suitable for people that have consumed 10 pints of lager. They especially enjoyed the Goan style of food.

Most Indian Restaurants are either owned by Pakistani or Bangladeshi.
  12. Good to see the return of Ae – Patcharee Raksawong and Fai – Dolsinee Krittiyapimolporn as anchors and

commentators on the "Rise and Shine" morning news programme.

They gained a wide following and a fan page on Facebook when they presented the English-language Morning Focus

press review on Channel 11 for 18 months up to February this year. Totally fluent in English and with a wicked

sense of humour, it will be a joy to see them back. I hope they are given the freedom to speak their minds and acreative producer.

Unfortunately the rest of the programming looks overly heavy on "lifestyle" and we know what that usually means.

    Agreed.
